1 Dead In Harlem Fire That Left People Dangling From Building: FDNY

HARLEM, NY — A fire in a Harlem left one person dead and forced others to hang off the building, where they were dramatically rescued by FDNY firefighters on ropes, officials said.

The blaze Friday afternoon inside 2 St. Nicholas Pl. left five people critically injured out of 18 overall, FDNY officials said.

The intense smoke and flames prompted many victims outside onto window ledges and fire escapes, including one who dangled off the building — as seen in video first reported by the New York Daily News — before he fell to the ground, said FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens.

Firefighters performed three rope rescues, a rare action in which they rappelled off the building’s roof to grab people from its upper floors, Hodgens said.

“We usually have one of these a year, or two,” the official said.

Driver Plummets Off De Luz Roadway, Helicopter Rescue Underway

TEMECULA, CA —An SUV launched from a hairpin curve in De Luz into the canyon below Thursday, leading to a helicopter rescue operation at Calle Vista Lejos and Calle Escadera.

The driver was seriously injured in the crash, found 300 feet below the roadway, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig, emergency responders worked from the ground and the air to retrieve him. The driver was ultimately airlifted to safety and taken to the hospital by a waiting ambulance.

Shortly before 3:45 p.m., an adult male driver of a Honda Odyssey was traveling on Calle Escadera at an unknown rate of speed. He approached a 90-degree curve in the road and failed to negotiate the curve safely, Lassig said.

His vehicle plummeted over the cliff and approximately 500 feet into the canyon below.

“The driver was ejected from the vehicle, and it is unknown if he was wearing his safety belt,” Officer Mike Lassig told Patch.

The crash was witnessed by a Calle Escadera guest house resident, who called 911 to report the incident and that the vehicle was “no longer visible” from the house or the road.

California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department arrived where the vehicle was last sighted, and two Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopters were called in for assistance. Firefighters reached the victim just before 4:15 p.m., according to dispatch reports.

The vehicle was listed as “unrecoverable,” and tow truck assistance was called to hoist it up and was told to bring “a lot of cable.”

New Beverly Community Electric Aggregation Program Launches In May

BEVERLY, MA — A citywide utility aggregation program initiated nearly four years ago and designed to provide discounted and more stable pricing over National Grid through bulk purchasing power will launch in May.

Beverly Community Electric will allow for more electricity from renewable sources with 20 months of negotiated price stability to protect residents and businesses from winter electricity price spikes.

National Grid remains the power company and delivery service for those participating, but Beverly Community Electric will become the supplier.

Find out what's happening in Beverlywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The program was initiated in July 2020 with the City Council’s vote to pursue the aggregation and green energy program. The state Department of Public Utilities approved Beverly’s application in December.

Mayor Mike Cahill said in a letter to the City Council that the city recently entered an agreement with First Point Power to keep rates fixed for 20 months.

Find out what's happening in Beverlywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Residents and businesses should receive a notice in the mail next month if they are eligible for the program. Those with private energy suppliers are not eligible at this time.

No action is required with those receiving the notice automatically enrolled in the plan. Those who wish to opt out can do so at any time with no fee or penalty.

According to the city, the Beverly Standard plan with 10 percent more renewable energy will be 13.919 cents per kilowatt hour, compared to the most recent 18.213 National Grid residential basic service rate. Residents can opt-in to the Beverly Clean rate with 100 renewable energy at 14.999 cents per kilowatt hour, while there is also a Beverly Basic rate option at 13.519 cents per kilowatt hour.

More about program pricing and options can be found here.

A virtual public information session is set for March 4 at 6:30 p.m. that will be recorded and uploaded to the program website here. An in-person information session will be held on March 15 at the Council on Aging at noon.

Since prices are negotiated for a fixed term, cost savings cannot be guaranteed in the event of a sharp drop in National Grid pricing during the course of the city contract.

Those who enroll will see their supplier appear as Beverly Community Electric-First Point Power starting in June.

Room 304: Suncoast Audio Presents Pass Laboratories

Suncoast Audio, a Sarasota-based dealership, was new to me, and boy, did it deliver: Four rooms, and each had serious buzz. Michael Bovaird, proprietor of Suncoast Audio and a cofounder of the Florida Audio Expo, put together rooms that played music that kept the room full, with knowledgeable support personnel (including Nordost’s Seth Snyder) to answer questions.

Room 304’s setup included the Esoteric K-05XD SACD/CD player/DAC ($12,000), the Pass Labs XP-17 phono stage ($4,500), the Pass Labs XP-22 dual-chassis line stage ($9,975), and the Pass Labs X260.8, 260Wpc Class AB monoblock amplifiers ($14,250/pair). Magico S3 mkIII loudspeakers ($45,500-$53,000) turned all that electricity into soundwaves and guided it toward the audience. Cables and power (including QKore) was by Nordost. Racks and stands were “Soto Voce” by Critical Mass.

Jennifer Warnes’ version of “Bird on A Wire” played with a broad stereo spread with atmospheric engagement. FKA Twigs’s “Cellophane” drew a vast soundstage. UK pianist Neil Cowley’s track was airy and detailed without being fussy. The system had air, resolution. and girth—a triple threat!

Unfortunately we don’t have video for this room, so instead we’ll include video from one of Suncoast’s other rooms, with the big MBL system. See below.

Superintendent Of Enfield Schools To Leave For Same Post On Shoreline

ENFIELD, CT — After a 20-year career with Enfield Public Schools, including the last seven as superintendent, Chris Drezek will soon be departing for a similar position in Old Saybrook.

Drezek was unanimously appointed by the Old Saybrook Board of Education at a meeting Wednesday. He will officially begin work in his new town on May 21.

“Mr. Drezek is an accomplished educational leader who creates innovative educational opportunities for students and fosters strong community partnerships,” superintendent search committee chair Karen Brodeur said in a written statement. “He is warm, engaging, and maintains a high standard of ethics and integrity. He has extensive experience in all facets of the work of a superintendent, and his leadership is student-centered.”

Find out what's happening in Enfieldwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Drezek was “consistently the top candidate” among 32 applicants for the post, according to Brodeur.

Drezek came to Enfield in 2004 as business manager, serving in that role until 2009. After a year in Wethersfield, he returned to Enfield in 2010 as director of human resources. He was named deputy superintendent in 2012, and was promoted to superintendent in 2017.

Find out what's happening in Enfieldwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

“Enfield has been my home for 20 years,” he told Patch. “It is the only place my kids have known that I work. It’s been an absolute privilege to be the superintendent the past seven years.”

Drezek will officially submit his letter of resignation to Board of Education chair Charlotte Riley at a special meeting Thursday.

“Charlotte is amazing; it was very hard having to tell her,” he said.

Riley told Patch, “During his time here, he has done some great things and has always been an advocate for the school district at the state level. Just yesterday I was with him at the Capitol and he stood and spoke to a room full of senators, state reps and his peers and went all in for Enfield to advocate for our budget and our students. Being Enfield’s superintendent is not a 9-5 type of job, rather a 24/7 one, and he has always made himself available, to be there when a crisis arises at 3 a.m. or when a last-minute meeting needs to be scheduled, or to leave in an instant to take care of an issue in a school. He will be missed by many, myself included, but I wish him the very best in his new position when it is time to go. The next few months will be a time of transition and change, but I am confident that Enfield Public Schools will move forward without barely skipping a beat because of the dedicated staff we have.”

Drezek guided the school system through some difficult periods, most prominently the global coronavirus pandemic that altered the course of education for nearly three years beginning in 2020.

He said with their children growing and leaving, he and his wife have begun planning to downsize.

“This is 100 percent a family decision,” he told Patch. “I gave everybody in my family a vote, and I never got to cast mine because it was unanimous.”

Clarendon Hills Chief Gets $50K In Exit Pact

CLARENDON HILLS, IL – Clarendon Hills and its longtime fire chief struck a severance deal Tuesday, in which he is set to get $50,000.

Chief Brian Leahy, who has been on paid administrative leave since early November, joined the fire department 52 years ago and took the helm in 1985.

In the agreement, the parties acknowledge that Leahy is being investigated for allegations of work-related misconduct.

Under the deal’s terms, Leahy will continue to get his regular pay and benefits through April 1. He is slated to get a 5 percent raise on March 16.

The agreement calls for Leahy to remain on paid administrative leave through April 1. On Wednesday, acting Fire Chief Dave Godek’s name replaced Leahy’s on the village’s website.

Leahy agreed to cooperate with the village’s payroll investigation, which started when he was placed on leave. The agreement said the investigation’s results, whatever they are, would be made public.

The agreement requires the village to allow Leahy to have a final sign-off over the fire department’s radio on a date the parties agree on. This is a tradition in the firefighting profession.

The pact bars Leahy and the village government from disparaging each other. And the village promises it would not oppose Leahy’s effort to get his pension.

Leahy gets to keep his village-issued cellphone and laptop computer after all village documents and access to the village’s system are removed from the devices.

At Tuesday’s Village Board meeting, trustees approved the agreement as part of a package of other business. No one said a word about it.

Patch obtained the severance agreement through a public records request.

Leahy has not returned messages for comment.

The DECAY Gives Their Thoughts On The Current State Of The TNA Knockouts Division

The DECAY (Rosemary & Havok) recently joined PW Mania for an in-depth interview about the current state of the Knockouts Division, as well as their thoughts on TNA rebranding from the IMPACT name. Elsewhere, they also hype up the promotion’s No Surrender premium live event happening this weekend. Highlights are below.

On TNA Wrestling returning:

Havok: The rebranding, the rebirth, or as Rosemary put it, the resurrection of TNA. Those three letters hold a very special place in my cold, black heart. This has been my home for a very long time, and it is a place where broken toys and misfits can go to play, battle, and put on one of the best television shows in all of television.

Rosemary: And be our authentic selves. There’s a reason we chose the TNA realm to make our home base.

Thoughts on the TNA Knockouts Division:

Rosemary: It ties back to the answer about Masha and Kelly. There’s no sense in testing yourself against a perceived inferior opponent. This entire company has always been encouraging and growing. It’s no secret that obviously, women’s wrestling is going to be behind in accordance with men’s wrestling because it hasn’t had the time to catch up to that. But it’s getting there quickly. Women are starting to find that they are capable of just as much as men, perhaps more. Women’s tag team wrestling is still a fledgling division. Tag team form is very different from a singles match, and it’s an entirely different structure to learn. So, to put together different tag teams who maybe haven’t studied tag team wrestling and put them in matches with people who have studied tag team wrestling, you can only get better in that environment. This is all about training and elevating each other. We want to face the best. Masha and Kelly are the best. However, Dani and Jody don’t have long to go. Right now, they need to get their priorities straight, instead of having little human squabbles.

Havok: To just add to Rosemary’s point, we do have the best women’s division on television today and I will stand by that statement boldly. Jordynne Grace is our Knockouts World Champion, and that’s by no fluke. Look at her, she’s a specimen. She’s one of the most amazing specimens of a human being that I have ever seen. She proves herself time and again, breaking barriers in the past month of things we never thought we’d see in pro wrestling, let alone women’s wrestling. We do have the best women’s division, and we welcome it. I would even welcome more teams coming in and challenging us. As Rosemary said, we want to play, and we want to play with the absolute best.
