Woman Shot In Joliet Bar Files Negligence Lawsuit

JOLIET, IL — Ten months after Joliet Patch broke the news, revealing that a woman was shot in the shoulder inside Joliet’s Terrace Inn Lounge on Gardner Street, the gunshot victim has filed a civil lawsuit against the Terrace Inn.

According to Jillian Nussbaum’s lawsuit, on May 29, 2023, the Terrace Inn sold or gave liquor to John Foster, an allegedly intoxicated person at the defendant’s premises, 630 Gardner Street in Joliet. The alcoholic beverages consumed by Foster caused his intoxication, according to the plaintiff.

As for Nussbaum, she was inside the Terrance Inn Lounge when Foster provoked an argument and fight with other people in the bar, and Foster fired a gun while inside the establishment, her lawsuit outlined.

Nussbaum was struck by Foster’s bullets and “as a direct and proximate result of the intoxication of John Foster, an allegedly intoxicated person, Jillian Nussbaum was caused to be injured when … John Foster … shot the plaintiff,” the lawsuit outlined.

The lawsuit accuses the Terrace Inn Lounge of negligence and of being liable under the Illinois Dram Shop Act.

The lawsuit also accused Terrance Inn Lounge of having failed to employ bouncers or security at its entrances, having failed to properly supervise its employees in the performance of their bouncer or security duties, failing to properly search John Foster, failing to provide a safe environment for its patrons including Nussbaum and failing to impede, restrain or arrest Foster, the man who shot Nussbaum.

This week’s lawsuit at Will County’s Courthouse was filed by attorney John Cichon of Polansky & Cichon, a Chicago law firm operating at the Two Prudential Plaza on North Stetson Avenue.

The personal injury lawsuit seeks a judgment in Nussbaum’s favor in excess of $50,000.

As for Foster, he has remained inside the Will County Jail for the past 10 months. His next pretrial hearing in Courtroom 503 is set for April 4.

Chaddsford Winery Up For Sale After 42 Years

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — The Chaddsford Winery, of the crown jewels of the region’s wine community, is up for sale for the first time in its 42 year history.

As spokespersons for the Petrillo family put it, ownership is “consolidating their investment portfolio and exiting the winery business.”

The asking price is $4.5 million. Owners want the property to remain a winery, and strongly advocated for that in their for sale announcement, but that is no guarantee.

“Chaddsford is a strong, modern brand with a loyal following and is now positioned to take the business to the next level under new ownership,” Corey Krejcik, General Manager of Chaddsford Winery, said in a statement announcing the sale.

The winery sits on a pastoral 5-acre stretch of land near the Brandywine River Art Museum.

Founded in 1982, Chaddsford has grown over the years into one of Pennsylvania’s oldest and most productive wineries. It currently produces about 24,000 barrels a year, and currently is old in seven states, including recent expansions into Florida, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Wholesale distribution accounts for about 23 percent of all revenue, the winery said.

Chaddsford also lauded its various events, like the Adult Trick or Treat Festival, which sold 6,300 tickets in 2023, and profitable experiential retail like table service, wine flights, and ticketed reserve tastings. These “allow for substantial up-selling opportunities,” the announcement opined.

Chaddsford’s wines have won numerous awards, including the Keystone Cup for Best White Wine in Pennsylvania, the Best in Show for Sparkling Semillon at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, and the Pennsylvania Sommelier Judgement.

Man Found Dismembered On LI Positively Identified: Officials

BABYLON, NY — The man whose body parts were found strewn across Long Island has been positively identified by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner as Malcolm Craig Brown, 53, officials told Patch Thursday.

The woman whose body parts were found along with Brown’s was identified recently as Donna R. Conneely, 59, Suffolk County police said.

Recently, Brown’s family told Patch that he is remembered as a beloved brother and son. Brown’s family has also said that one of the four charged in the deaths was their cousin.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the grisly discovery of human remains in Babylon, West Islip and Bethpage, police said.

Suffolk County Police homicide squad detectives arrested and charged Steven Brown, 44, Jeffrey Mackey, 38, and Amanda Wallace, 40, all of 25 Railroad Ave., in Amityville, and Alexis Nieves, 33, who is without a known residence, with first-degree hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a human corpse in relation to the body parts’ discovery, police said.

“Steven Brown is our cousin,” Malcolm Craig Brown’s sister Coreen Bullock told Patch. “We were all raised together. We grew up in Yonkers and Steven and his family lived on Long Island. As a family, growing up, our cousins were our friends. This is why this is such a tragedy!” She added, “There are no words. We are a close-knit family, and now the family is torn.”

Ira Weissman, an attorney for Brown, did not immediately return a request from Patch for comment. But he told CBS News: “I will have further discussions with the DA’s office, hopefully get some evidence. That would be nice to see exactly what they claim my client did, what part — if any — that he took.”

Bullock described her brother, who, she said, was adored by his family.

“Malcolm was the brother of three. He loved to draw, was a foodie — and family meant everything to him,” Bullock, who lives in Pennsylvania, told Patch. “We lost a brother and our mom lost her youngest son. Malcolm was a generous man in the sense of —he wasn’t rich, but he would give you the shirt off his back.”

According to Suffolk County Police, Conneely’s last known address was in Yonkers; her body parts were located on February 29 and March 5, police said.

Police have not yet provided any information regarding what the connection between the four charged, and the two victims, might have been.

According to an update by Suffolk County Police homicide squad detectives, an investigation into the human remains found in Babylon on February 29 resulted in a search warrant that was executed at a Railroad Ave. address in Amityville. No human remains were located during the search, police said.

Human remains were, however, located in a wooded area across from 103 Lakeway Drive in West Babylon, police said. The scene was processed by the Suffolk County Police homicide squad and the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said. In addition, human remains were also located at Bethpage State Park, police said.

The remains located in West Babylon and Bethpage are believed to belong to the same victims from the February 29 discovery, police said.

The last known address of the man and woman found dismembered was the same location in Yonkers, however, it’s unclear when they last resided there, police said.

Based on the investigation, the discovery of the remains appears to be an isolated incident with no threat to the public, police said, adding that the investigation is continuing.

According to Suffolk County police, the human remains found at Southards Pond Park in Babylon belonged to both a woman and a adult male, including a woman’s arm, leg and head, and a man’s two arms, which had tattoos.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner determined that a severed head, right arm, left leg from the knee down, and a right upper leg first found by a Suffolk County Police cadaver dog at the western side of Southards Pond Park were believed to be those of an adult woman, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, at about 8:40 a.m. on Feb. 29, a high school student was walking to school and discovered a severed left arm on the west side of Seagal Boulevard at the eastern end of Southards Pond Park, between Park Avenue and Mason Avenue. The student called her father, who then called 911, police said.

Following an investigation by homicide squad detectives, a cadaver dog from the canine unit discovered a leg in a mound of leaves on the western side of the park near Graham Place; the same dog continued searching the east side of the park and found a right arm about 20 feet away from the original discovery of the left arm, police said. The remains found on the eastern edge of the park appeared to be male, police said.

Here's The Route Of Sewaren Waterfront Walkway

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — It was big news when Woodbridge announced Monday they are finishing the waterfront walkway along Cliff Road in Sewaren.

Now today, here is exactly the route the finished walkway will take, plus a footbridge the county plans to build to connect the Woodbridge marina to Alvin P. Williams Park. No date has been given when the walking bridge to Alvin P. Williams will be built; that appears to be far off in the future.

As it currently stands, the Sewaren waterfront walkway is only half complete:

The existing paved sidewalk begins on Cliff Road at Captain Carlson Park/the boat launch (at the end of Ferry Street) and ends about a half mile before the former Captain Hook’s Marina, which Woodbridge Township purchased a few years ago.

The plan is to now have the walkway be completed and connect the town boat launch to the new Sewaren marina. In total, the walkway will run for 1.5 miles. Woodbridge plans to rename the old Captain Hook’s Marina the “Up Smith’s Creek complex,” complete with a tiki bar, amphitheater and more parking. Here’s renderings of how it will look when finished.

Mayor John McCormac said ever since the 1990s the town wanted a walkway there. But at some point the money ran out, and the current walkway stops halfway. Congressman Frank Pallone secured $4 million this year to finish the walkway. McCormac said the town will use the money to “go as far as we can go.”

The reconstructed Sewaren marina will have:

The town is also making improvements to and expanding the existing dog park off Cliff Road.

Woodbridge Twp. said in a statement Thursday:

“Sewaren is long overdue for economic development/redevelopment and revitalization.

The entire marina project will enhance the economy of Sewaren as it will bring walking tourism to the neighborhood. The goal of the project is to connect residents to amenities that are not easily accessible, as they currently exist. The 1.5 mile Woodbridge/Sewaren Waterfront Walkway will not only boost property values because of the added amenity in the neighborhood, but will draw residents and visitors to enjoy a low-impact stroll to the marina businesses and surrounding Sewaren businesses.”

Finally … Serious Movement On Former Vernon Car Dealership Land

VERNON, CT — A regional giant in the auto industry has submitted plans for developing a former auto dealership property one day short of a year since it purchased the land.

A site plan for 808 Talcottville Road was submitted by Balise Auto Group Wednesday calling for a the construction of a multi-faceted commercial building that would include a car wash, a gas station, a convenience store and other retail space.

That’s the spot of the old Clyde Chevrolet dealership.

Special permits are needed, as well as a site plan approval, Vernon Community & Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said. The site plan was submitted Wednesday. Exactly one year ago Thursday, Balise purchased the land for $700,000.

Here is a look at the plans:

The Clyde dealership was a respected member of the Vernon business community for many years on Talcottville Road. It was established in 1956, when the stylish Chevy Bel Air cost a whopping $2,450.

Then, in January 2011, tragedy struck. Most of the building’s west wing, which housed the service bays, collapsed under a heap of accumulating snow.

The entire dealership was eventually razed and the parcel has pretty much sat vacant ever since.

Gately would periodically mention “nibbles” on the land, but nothing serious happened until Balise made its move last year.

Balise currently owns and operates a car wash at 56 Talcottvile Road, which it purchased from Economy Oil.
