Men In Ski Masks In Car On Centre Avenue, Chestnut Street Monday Night

SECAUCUS, NJ — A lot happened Monday night in town, Secaucus Police announced on their Facebook page:

When the officer approached to investigate, the car accelerated at a high rate of speed and fled from the officer. The officer attempted to stop the car, which then began to travel at an extremely high rate of speed on Rt. 3 West, to which the officer did not pursue due to the adherence of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Guidelines of Pursuit Policy.

Approximately 10 minutes later, it was learned that this car was involved in a theft of an entire ATM from a gas station in Hasbrouck Heights.

The car was never located.

The officer tried to stop this car as it drove in the direction of the officer’s vehicle, swerved around him and proceeded at a high rate of speed onto County Avenue. On County, the vehicle was observed to operate in a reckless manner across the double yellow lines around other vehicles.

Anyone with any information regarding the above incidents is encouraged to contact the Secaucus Police Department nonemergency line at 201-330-2060, the SPD Tips Line at (201) 330-2049 or [email protected]. Callers can remain anonymous!

Secaucus Police Dept. said in a statement:

“It should also be noted that this past weekend, Newark Police Department had an arrest of three adults and five juveniles that were involved in numerous armed robberies and stolen vehicles. Without divulging sensitive investigative procedures, it was learned that some of these individuals were within the confines of our jurisdiction (Secaucus) on more than one occasion. The three incidents (Monday) night were reportable due to all of the assigned officers’ proactivity.”

“The uptick of statewide stolen vehicles has been apparent in recent days. This also includes stolen cars entering towns to commit home invasions, robberies, thefts, etc. The correlation between stolen vehicles and additional crimes are extremely probable. The Secaucus Police Department has made a proactive approach in dealing with these statistics through data and analysis. Patrol Division Commander Captain Austin Hawxhurst has devised a plan for manpower reassignment and personnel deployment according to intelligence-led policing and studies of these statewide events.”

“We would be remiss to not mention that a major role in prevention is you! Please contact us if you observe anything that doesn’t seem right, so that our officers can investigate. The more sets of eyes, the more effective we can be!”

Girl Scout Cookie Throwdown Poll: What's Your 2024 Favorite?

ACROSS AMERICA — There are only a few weeks left to get your Girl Scout Cookie fix in a tradition that dates back to 1917, when Girl Scouts began selling cookies to raise money to support their local councils.

Sales continue until April. Starting on Feb. 16, the Girl Scout Cookie Finder can connect you with a Girl Scout troop or online sales opportunities. Information on how to buy Girl Scout Cookies is also available by texting COOKIES to 59618.

To celebrate Girl Scouts and the tradition of cookie sales, we’re bringing back the informal Patch Girl Scout Cookie Throwdown survey Last year, Thin Mints are a clear favorite. Is that still the case?

Find out what's happening in Across Americawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Here are the 2024 cookies:

Absent from the list are the Raspberry Rally cookies, introduced last year in a pilot online program, but put on pause, the Girl Scout organization said, so it can concentrate on its classic cookie varieties.

Find out what's happening in Across Americawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

These cookies, billed as a “sister” to Thin Mints, but infused with raspberry flavorings instead of mint, were always intended as a limited-edition cookie available only online. But they sold out quickly, becoming as difficult to score as Taylor Swift tickets, with “cookie scalpers” selling them for exorbitant prices. Some cookies ended up on eBay.

The Girl Scouts were disappointed, scolding the profiteers in a statement provided to NBC’s “Today” show.

“While we are happy that there’s such a strong demand for our cookies year-over-year, we’re saddened that the platforms and the sellers are disregarding the core mission of the cookie program and are looking to make a profit off of the name without supporting our mission and the largest girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world.”

Girl Scouts USA points out that proceeds from each box of cookies sold remains with local troops and councils to help create “impactful experiences throughout the year, including service projects, troop travel and even summer camp.”

So, what’s your favorite Girl Scout cookie? Just fill out the form below. And don’t worry — we don’t collect email addresses.

Darien Police Chief To Retire After Over 40 Years In Law Enforcement

DARIEN, CT — After 40-plus years of service to the town, Darien Police Chief Donald B. Anderson will retire.

Anderson submitted a letter to Darien Police Commission Chair Kim Huffard on Feb. 1 announcing his plans to retire from active service effective April 1.

“I leave you with the words of the immortal Ralph Waldo Emerson; ‘To know one life has breathed easier because you have lived, that is to have succeeded,'” Anderson wrote in his letter.

“To those residents, business owners and visitors to the town of Darien whose lives I may have touched, in good times and in bad, I thank you for the opportunity to have provided public safety service for over four decades and I know, with utmost certainty, that some whose paths have crossed with mine have in fact breathed just a little bit easier. For that, with sincere appreciation and humility, I count this career as a success.”

Anderson joined the DPD in 1983 and rose to the rank of sergeant in 1999, lieutenant in 2000, and he also served as a member of the detective division and as a member of the specialized accident investigation team.

In 2013, Anderson became captain and served as the captain of the administrative services bureau. He was appointed as the 11th chief in department history in 2019 following the retirement of Ray Osborne.

The son of the late Bruce M. Anderson, who also served as Darien’s police chief from 1988 to 1993, Anderson recounted his experience in law enforcement.

“This is simply not a profession that you can ‘love’ each and every day,” he noted.

“I have valiantly, but too often futilely, tried to breathe life back into human bodies ranging from infants to octogenarians. I have been bled on, barfed on and spit on. I have reluctantly walked up the front walkway of numerous Darien addresses, with an increased pulse and knees knocking, to make a death. notification, all too often on the sudden and tragic passing of a young resident, knowing full well that this ominous knock on the front door will forever change the course of history for that local family,” Anderson wrote.

“I have had my manhood, my IQ, my judgement and even my family lineage questioned far too many times to count. I have witnessed events, as all police officers have while serving in both small towns and big cities, which are simply things no one would ever want to see,” he added .”I have lost colleagues and friends at an early age due to the ongoing stressors and rigors of this profession, some even by their own hand. So, although this is a job that you cannot always ‘love,’ it will forever remain a job that should always be respected and, yes, even admired.”

Anderson also thanked his family for their support over the years, and former police commissioners.

On Monday night at the regularly scheduled Board of Selectmen meeting, which was broadcast on Darien TV79, First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky lauded Anderson and his father for serving the town for over 70 combined years.

“It’s just a remarkable testament to their commitment as officers and their commitment to this town to have people like that who would make that kind of career dedication,” Zagrodzky said. “While we’re sad to see [Chief Donald Anderson] go, it’s been terrific to have someone of his standing at the head of our police department.”

Zagrodzky said a celebration for Anderson will take place in the future.

Police Commissioner Brent Hayes told Patch the commission will be conducting interviews for a new chief in the weeks ahead, and the plan is to have a new chief announced before Anderson’s departure.

“Chief Anderson’s dedication and service have had a profound impact on the Darien Police Department and our community. His more than 40 years of commitment reflect not only professional excellence but also a genuine care for the well-being of the families in town,” Hayes told Patch via email. “Chief Anderson is a person of great integrity, and I’m proud to call him a friend. Don will be missed by many in our community and I look forward to hearing his retirement stories in the years ahead.”
