WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW PRIMER 9/28: Clash of Champions Fallout and Next Up for Various Storylines Including WWE, Raw Women’s, and Women’s Tag Team Championships, Retribution

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW PRIMER
ORLANDO, FL. AT THE THUNDERDOME IN THE AMWAY CENTER
SEPTEMBER 28, 2020
AIRS ON USA NETWORK, 8:00 p.m. EST
BY FRANK PETEANI (@FrankPeteani), PWTORCH.COM SPECIALIST

Announcers: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, Samoa Joe

Top Three Developments from Last Week

  • Retribution cut their first in-ring promo and made their in-ring debut in the main event against The Hurt Business (Cedric Alexander, Bobby Lashley, and Shelton Benjamin). The match ended in a non-finish when more Retribution hench people got involved. Drew McIntyre and other Raw wrestlers made the “save.” We also learned the names of the male members of the stable. They are Slapjack, T-Bar, and Mace.
  • Ahead of Clash of Champions, Randy Orton returned and reaffirmed he would be in the Ambulance Match for the WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre.
  • Seth Rollins cast doubt over the Mysterio family as to whether Aalyah was Rey’s daughter. He cited her checking on Murphy a week earlier following a steel cage match between Seth and Dominik. Rey said to leave his daughter out of things as she’s 19 and naïve, which did not sit well with Aalyah.

Clash of Champions Results Pertinent to Raw

  • Asuka defeated Zelina Vega to retain the Raw Women’s Championship.
  • Bobby Lashley defeated Apollo Crews to retain the U.S. Championship.
  • The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins defeated Andrade & Angel Garza to retain the Raw Tag Team Championship. The referee appeared to abruptly end the match when Angel Garza was injured.
  • Bayley defeated Raw Women’s Champion Asuka to retain the Smackdown Women’s Championship. Asuka replaced Nikki Cross who was announced as not cleared to compete before the show. Sasha Banks attacked Bayley after the match.
  • Drew McIntyre defeated Randy Orton in an ambulance match to retain the WWE Championship. Big Show, Christian, and Shawn Michaels got involved paying Orton back for attacks on them in recent months.

We come off Clash of Champions and start to think about the next PPV, which will be Hell in a Cell on October 25. We found out that the 2020 Draft will take place starting on the October 9 edition of Smackdown and conclude on October 12 edition of Raw. As is typically the case following a PPV, nothing is advertised yet for tonight. With the draft coming, most might not be as invested in what they see on TV since wrestlers will be changing addresses come a week from Friday. That said, we’ll preview tonight’s show in a little different format than normal. The report will primarily feature my analysis. We’ll look at the top stories coming out of last week’s show that weren’t addressed last night as well as the major issues coming out of the Clash.

WWE Championship Picture

With Hell in a Cell around the corner, we’ll most certainly find out who Drew’s next challenger will be for the WWE Championship after he retained the title for a second time over Randy Orton. Whether that’s determined tonight or over the course of the next few weeks remains to be seen.

Two years ago, Braun Strowman cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Universal Champion Roman Reigns and wanted a Hell in a Cell match. He wanted it to prevent the Shield from interfering as they had in previous weeks leading up to the announcement. That said, it’s conceivable that either Keith Lee or Randy Orton can be positioned into the same match with Drew McIntyre. Last night’s match between Drew and Orton had Big Show, Christian and Shawn Michaels get involved. No one has been pinned using a finisher either, thus those could be reasons WWE uses to justify putting them in a Hell in a Cell match. That would in theory prevent anyone from interfering and give Drew or Orton a chance to use their finishers to win the match.

In the last two weeks we saw Drew and Lee wrestle to DQ (or non) finishes when Retribution got involved and last week Orton. Keith could make a case that he wants a match where no one (in theory) could interfere and they could have a decisive finish. Let’s not rule out a triple threat Hell in a Cell either, which I don’t think people would want to see, but it’s something to think about.

Typically, there’s a match from Raw and one from Smackdown. I don’t see another Hell in a Cell-worthy match on Raw, but we’ll see what happens. Here’s Drew in a WWE exclusive after last night:

Raw Women’s Championship

It’s likely there will be another match between Asuka and Zelina Vega, given what happened after the match last night. Vega has primarily managed Andrade and Angel Garza but separated herself from them a few weeks ago. She defeated Mickie James last week to earn the right to face Asuka last night. Given the depth chart on Raw, it doesn’t seem likely Asuka will move on to someone else until the draft. Whether they do a rematch tonight or build up to another at Hell in a Cell remains to be seen but given the post-match angle I could see a rematch tonight. It’s hard to know when Vince McMahon makes the decision on things of this nature. Here are Asuka and Vega in separate WWE exclusives:

Women’s Tag Team Championship

Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax were to defend the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan (Riott Squad) last night. WWE announced earlier in the day that Baszler and Jax, as well as Nikki Cross, were not medically cleared to compete. It was also announced on the kickoff show.

There was a COVID-19 outbreak at the WWE Performance Center and there are multiple reports that show all three women were in contact with someone who had the virus, and thus had to quarantine. If this is true, and I say if only because I don’t want to speculate, then it makes sense Jax and Baszler were not available to defend the titles last night. Last week they defeated Natalya & Lana in a non-title match. Jax then gave Lana a Samoan Drop through the announce table. If the resolve is the match doesn’t take place for a few weeks or even as far as Hell in a Cell, the quarantine scenario lines up. In any event, we’ll find out tonight.

Apparently Jax was none too please with how the announcement was handled. She also insinuated that Baszler was expecting (a baby) in a separate tweet, but Baszler responded saying she was expecting to be heartbroken by the Vikings. Torch editor Wade Keller as well as Jason Powell and Jake Barnett from prowrestling.net know the feeling. I know the same feeling girlfriend, but with the Giants although they have sucked for years now. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, tweets:

Retribution

I was hoping to avoid this, but I suppose as the Raw primer author I must talk about Retribution. I talked about what happened last week in the top three developments. Most noteworthy is that Tom Philips framed their signing to WWE as given them the right to do whatever they wanted to whomever they wanted any time. He doubled down on that throughout the show, and if memory serves Byron Saxton and Jerry “The King” Lawler backed him up. It was obvious that Mia Yim was the first person speaking in the show opening, and she said “to WWE management, you think your company is safe because you gave us contracts? Think again.” She then said her brothers and sisters are done being stepped on so they can get some imaginary brass bring. Another “unnamed man” who was Dominic Dijakovic and later revealed to be “T-Bar” ran off a bunch of mumbo jumbo about hellholes, infestations, whores, etc. They went on the attack throughout the night, later going after Titus O’Neil and others.

T-Bar has been the most vocal on Twitter. Their mission is to destroy the WWE. Don’t the shareholders have something to say about this? If I were on the board, I wouldn’t want to give these people contracts. I’m not going to include every tweet, but here are a few “highlights” (if you consider anything this group does as a highlight):

It’s interesting to see the group engage with people on social media. It may be by design, given how badly the angle has been received. Does WWE want them to own it, and have fans embrace it in a weird twisted way with the engagement? Who knows, but it’s like nothing I’ve even seen in “invasion stories.” We’ll see. As far as the involvement with the Hurt Business, I see that continuing since they don’t have another group with which to feud. They could move on to something with Kevin Owens, unless he’s not done with Aleister Black. Last week Black attacked Owens after he had Dabbo-Kato and Braun Strowman on the Kevin Owens Show ahead of their Raw Underground match which was won by Braun.

Let’s be honest, Retribution is a hideous angle on many levels. My guess is it runs its course and they bring the wrestlers back and make NO mention of their involvement in the group. We’ll find out what’s next tonight.

Other Stories Not Addressed Last Night

  • A video was run on Bianca Belair outlifting someone at the gym.
  • Apollo Crews defeated Cedric Alexander.
  • Dolph Ziggler defeated Arturo Ruas in Raw Underground.
  • The referee stopped a Raw Underground match between Riddick Moss and Erik of the Viking Raiders when Moss gave Erik a right roundhouse.
  • Raw Women’s Champion Asuka defeated Peyton Royce in a non-title match.

Final Thoughts

I don’t want Retribution to bring the show down, but it’s hard to not let the stench of the angle ruin my enjoyment of everything else. I am looking forward to seeing what’s next for everything I mentioned in the report, including Drew McIntyre. Perhaps the draft will move things in a better direction across the board, and thus we have to be patient.

WWE Smackdown’s “season premiere” final rating ties for best in key demo, viewership down from last year, key stats and perspective

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

Last Friday’s WWE Smackdown on Fox, billed as the “Season Premiere,” drew 2.124 million total viewers (up significantly from the preliminary overnight ratings released Saturday). That’s essentially flat with the prior four weeks – about 55,000 down from last week’s Draft, but 14,000 above the Sept. 25 viewership.

One year ago on Fox, Smackdown drew 2.545 million viewers. So this week’s show is down 421,000 or roughly 16.5 percent.

In the key demo, it drew a 0.56 rating, and it tied for the best demo rating among all broadcast network shows on Friday night, tied with ABC’s “Shark Tank.”

John Cena speaks on current crop of top WWE stars

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

John Cena has turned 180 degrees on his opinion of WWE’s top stars.

In an interview with Alfred Konuwa at Forbes, Cena discussed the current landscape in WWE and admitted his previous statements on their star power were incorrect. For extensive quotes, check out Post Wrestling’s article HERE.

“Forbes did an article on me back in 2020 where I had said that I don’t believe that WWE will ever have a marquee star,” Cena said. “And here we are, less than a year later, and I can blatantly say I was wrong. You wanna talk about being too close to the product? I was just too close. Having seen it, having lived it myself, I should have just realized that the company is in transition. It takes a long time—I would say it’s three-and-a-half years or more—to build a certain talent because I’ve walked in those shoes.”

Ccna went on to highlight specific talents in the company that have recently thrived as faces of the WWE. “Now you have Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks can be in that conversation, but it’s not what I said it was in 2020,” he said. “It’s not a scattered fragment of Super Friends. WWE has just refocused, re-shifted and now is consolidating on marquee stars. They have their marquee stars, and going forward they will have their big names. As far as those names being larger than life, the enormity of their impact is up to the individuals themselves.”

John Cena’s most recent WWE match was at WrestleMania 36. He competed with and lost to The Fiend in a Firefly Funhouse match.

Samoa Joe Reaches New Milestone With ROH Television Championship Reign

Samoa Joe has now become the second longest ROH Television Champion in the brand’s history.

The King of Television surpassed 472 days as champion, passing Dragon Lee’s 2019-2021 stint that lasted 469 days. Joe now only trails Jay Lethal, who held the belt for 567 days between April 2014 and October 2015.

Joe’s reign began back in April of 2022 when he defeated Minoru Suzuki on AEW Dynamite to capture the ROH Television Title. Since then he has defended it 13 times against multiple top stars including Mark Briscoe, Dalton Castle, Matt Sydal, Christopher Daniels, Brian Cage, Colt Cabana, and more.

It was recently announced that a new tournament will begin to determine Joe’s next challenger. You can read about that here.

Eric Young doesn’t regret turning down ‘life-changing money’ from WWE

Back in December 2022, it was first reported that former two-time Impact World Champion Eric Young would be headed back to WWE, but no additional details were known at the time.

Young's departure became evident after he was killed in storyline by Deaner, his Violent by Design stablemate.

Months went by and Young was never seen on WWE television and it was recently reported by Fightful that Young had asked for his release only a few months after signing. They later reported that WWE sources confirmed Young "cited moral, creative and personal reasons as why he didn't want to work with Vince McMahon."

Click Here: Memphis Depay Jersey Sale

By this past April, his release had been granted and his 90-day non-compete clause was up just in time for him to make his surprise return at Impact Slammiversary as the mystery partner of Scott D'Amore.

I recently caught up with Young to set the record straight and learn more about what's ahead. The entire interview is available above for free on YouTube.

Why did he leave WWE?

"I can say that I signed up for one thing and then was presented with a completely different thing and personally, professionally and for me, more importantly morally, I can't take instruction and work for a person like that," he said with "a person" assumed to be McMahon.

He explained that he didn't want to leave Impact in the first place, but "business is business" and he couldn't decline the opportunity being offered to him by WWE.

"If you would have said that nine months ago, six months ago, I probably would have said 'No, I wouldn't be back in Impact.' But fate's got a funny way of doing things. And like I said, I didn't really want to leave in the first place, but business is business. An opportunity had presented itself that I just couldn't say no to," he said.

"I made the move and I don't regret it at all. Nine months vacation, there's worse things that could happen to a person for sure," he said.

Young also explained that he considered himself "lucky" to be in a position where he could ask for, and be granted, his release. It was a decision he knew came with risks.

"I know that there are tons of people that won't have that ability and can't make that choice, but I could. And for me, it was undoubtedly, unequivocally and unabashedly the right choice for me. And it's not going to be the same for everybody, but for me, it's the right choice.

"I walked away from a massive opportunity & life-changing money and I don't regret it. I didn't regret it then and I certainly don't regret it now. And I know in ten years I certainly won't regret it. And I'll know it was the exact right decision. And I'm glad that I have the ability to make it," he said.

South Suburban Fans Prefer 'Wienermobile' Over 'Frankmobile'

SOUTH SUBURBS, IL — Fans young and old turned out in droves at south suburban Fairplay supermarkets last Thursday and Friday to get a look at Oscar Mayer’s iconic mobile hot dog, newly renamed the “Frankmobile.”

Known as the ‘Wienermobile” for 87 years, most people wanted to know if the “Frankmobile” name was permanent or some hairbrained publicity stunt of the Kraft Heinz executives to promote the change in recipe of the all-beef hotdogs.

“It will always be the Wienermobile to me,” was the general consensus of just about everyone on social media and those who got up close and personal with the Frankmobile at Hickory Hills and Oak Lawn Fairplay stores, which also made stops at the Worth and Morgan Park locations.

Find out what's happening in Oak Lawnwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The company was founded by German immigrant Oscar Mayer and his brother, Gottfried, who got their start selling bratwurst, liverwurst and the white sausage Weisswurst on Chicago’s North Side in 1883. The brothers began branding their meats in 1900. Company founder Oscar Mayer’s nephew, Carl B. Mayer created the first Wienermobile in 1936. The company is still based in Chicago.

The Frankmobile was piloted by frankfurters Grill ‘Em Up Emily and BBQ Brady, who shared the weenie-bago cost about $500,000, one of six mobile hot dogs criss-crossing America this summer. Grill ‘Em Up Emily gave us a unique description of the Frankmobile’s measurements – in wieners.

9 Good News Stories: Kid Rocks; Helping Teachers; $1K A Week For Life

ACROSS AMERICA — Rylee Sherwood is only a middle schooler, but she’s figured out how things work.

Students start with the supplies they need, and teachers make sure they have plenty of the same in reserve. It takes a big bite out of teachers’ paychecks.

“Teachers spend a minimum of $500 per school year to support their classrooms,” the Brick, New Jersey, teen told Patch’s Karen Wall. “In any other job, you don’t have to put out money to do your job.”

This Kid Rocks

Kobi Reese isn’t a typical rock star. He’s only 12 and just finished sixth grade at the Edison Intermediate School in Westfield, New Jersey. But, boy, does that kid have talent. He performs with more than 30 adult bands and has his own band. He writes his own music and has released a few songs on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital platforms. His fan base is enormous. Rock music has always been part of his life. His parents signed him up for drum lessons after finding him drumming on his bed frame with chopsticks. “He is our fifth child, so the last thing we needed in the house was a drum kit,” his mother, Lori, told Patch’s Alexis Tarrazi. “But finally, when he was turning 7 years old, he said he didn’t want a birthday party or presents. ‘All I want is a drum kit,’ and at that point, we thought we had to give in.” » A Patch Exclusive by Alexis Tarrazi for Westfield Patch

Thomas Burke shakes it off with humility when people call him the “beloved” principal at Seaford Harbor Elementary School on Long Island. “You do this job, day in and day out; you have those great days and then those challenging days,” he told Patch’s Jerry Barmash ahead of his last day at the school. “But seeing the impact that you have [on] children, families and teachers, sometimes you don’t always realize that. No More Short Shrift For Barbers

Jessica Dudley has created Connecticut’s first registered apprentice program for cosmetology, and it sets up the next generation of workers for success, Todd Berch, the manager of the state Labor Department’s Office of Apprenticeship Training, told Patch’s Saul Flores. That especially goes for traditional barbers.“My goal was to provide a license that read cosmetology,” said Dudley, who owns Jessica’s Color Room in Middletown. “Barbering is clipper cuts, and with a cosmetology license, they can work with chemicals to color, highlight, balayage, correct color and clipper cuts. Although a surprise brain tumor altered many aspects of his life, one thing that hasn’t changed for Lake In the Hills, Illinois, police officer A.J. Gazda is his attitude. At only 30, he’s coming to grips with what he says is his new normal. “My whole thought process has always been, ‘I really don’t have a choice in this’ and so I’ll control what I can and whatever I can’t control, I’ll just let it be,” he told Patch’s Jeff Arnold. “So the new normal is that I can either be upset by it and be annoyed by it, or I can look for the positive outcome in it.
