AUGUST 16, 2023
NASHVILLE, TENN.

DYNAMITE NOTES

-It was a wonderful time until the chainsaw match. Everyone was invested and into it the show until then. It was awful. Then I felt the Brit Baker vs. The Bunny match was a lull, but then things picked up from there again. The crowd got won back over, which was a miracle after that chainsaw match.

-It was a good course correction to have The Acclaimed come out after the Baker-Bunny match.

-The chainsaw match started backstage and there was no sound at all. Hardy came out to his music, but then just left backstage. It was really tough to tell what was going on. There were all these people entering the fray and there was no context and it was just a mess. Then the chainsaw guy came out and I thought, come on, this is terrible. Some sound or context would have helped.

-Tony Khan came out after Dynamite and said all the money they made from the chainsaw match went to aid the situation in Maui after the fires.

-Eddie Kingston got the biggest pop of the night. When his music hit and he came out, the whole place blew up. It was surprising considering how little he’s been on TV.

-MJF and Adam Cole was the highlight of the night for everybody, I think. That story has taken on a life of its own and exceeded my expectations. The crowd paid close attention to the Outback Steakhouse video on the big screen. The Kangaroo Kick was immediately over. People were just eating up everything that Cole and MJF were throwing at them. As somebody’s who’s been thinking the Cole & MJF thing might be done with after the first match and initially rolled my eyes at them teaming, I’m really looking forward to seeing where everything goes. I have no idea where this is going and I can’t wait to see what happens.

-Don Callis had the loudest boos of the night. I could hardly make out anything he said because people were relentlessly booing him. He’s so loathsome and it’s so fun to boo that guy.

-I love Kenny Omega as an athlete, but as a personality, I don’t get it. The cutaways to J.R. was so weird. The crowd was paying attention to it, though.

-I was disappointed that The Young Bucks vs. The Gunns only had 10 or so minutes. I think the Gunns and Bucks could be a PPV match down the road. I have mixed feelings about the Bucks. They didn’t get much of a grand entrance. I’ve enjoyed their matches, but I don’t know if I even know what either of their voices sound like. I wish those guys had more of an identity than “Hey, we put on some really good tag matches.”

-They didn’t really hype Rampage during Dynamite at all, so I didn’t know if I wanted to stay.

-Overall, the crowd reacted how Tony Khan would like. There were no mutinies. I don’t think I saw a C.M. Punk shirt. The only talent-specific shifts I saw were the Acclaimed, Orange Cassidy, and MJF. AEW’s merchandise is so thin at these live events.

-I had fun and it’s great that AEW came back to Nashville. I went to the previous two Dynamites that were at smaller venues in the area, and they didn’t pack those, so going to the Bridgestone Arena this time was a gamble.

RAMPAGE TAPING

(1) Rey Fenix vs. Kommander. That was a real banger. Most of the fans who stayed were on their feet for that. (Winner: Kommander)

(2) Aussie Open (Kyle Davis & Mark Fletcher) vs. Brother Zay & Ethan Page. Aussie Open talked about facing MJF & Cole afterward. (Winners: Aussie Open)

(3) Sammy Guevara vs. Jon Cruz. (Winner: Guevara

(4) Hikaru Shida & Skye Blue vs. Ruby Soho & Toni Storm (w/Saraya). This led to all four women in the All In four-way match getting into a brawl. (Winners: Shida & Blue)

-Matt Sydal wrestled in a match before Dynamite.

Jim Ross Shares Target Date For His AEW Return

Jim Ross recently talked about a wide range of topics on his Grilling JR podcast.

During it, the WWE Hall of Famer gave a health update, noting he wants to be back in time for the AEW Worlds End PPV on December 30. Here are the highlights:

On his current status:

“I gotta go see an entomologist because we’re finding out that my vision is somewhat blurred at times. So we’re gonna get my eyes checked. I’m good today and I might be good tomorrow but I’m not good all the time. I want to be good all the time. It’s a lot of moving parts, Connie. I really do appreciate all the fans on social media because I read the tweets…I really appreciate the support, it’s heartwarming…it’s meaningful. I’m not bullsh*tting nobody.”

Ross continued, “The medicines that have been prescribed to me are working. Mentally, I feel like I’m back in the hunt competitively. I have no idea what my future is at AEW, I have no clue. To be very frank about it, I’m not worried about yay or nay. My work should stand on its own after 50 years, for God’s sake. Seriously. So sometimes I worry too much. I think it’s just a matter of being an alpha male and wanting to do whatever it is on my terms. And I understand that’s not always possible. But I do appreciate all the feedback. It’s very meaningful to me. I appreciate everybody’s support and their love.”

On when he would like to be back:

“Well sooner than later…I know that’s not a very good answer. A date I have at the corner of my eye [and] thought about the pay-per-view (Worlds End) in Long Island. That’s a hope that I would be healthy enough and able to work and work to the level that I need to work. No, I don’t have a date. It’s just hard to plan. I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment. If I say I’m gonna do something and I say I’m gonna do it then it’s gonna get done but I can’t commit to that right now because I still got some ongoing health issues that need to be addressed and they are being addressed as I mentioned moments ago. It’s just a process, man. As long as my heart’s beating that blood, I want to be involved in some way because I still love the wrestling business. It’s cruel sometimes. It’s challenging more often than not. For some reason, it’s what I love and now that Jan’s gone, I need something to love. I’m not being funny here. I need to make sure I got something in the works to fill that void…”

On Worlds End being the goal for him:

“I’m thinking that’s one goal, I guess you could say. I don’t know. That would be on my radar, no doubt about that. Largely that’s up to Tony Khan and what he wants me to do and getting approval from the doctor so I can travel okay and deal with the swelling and all this other sh*t. I’ve just gotten used to the pain and I’ve gotten used to the discomfort.”

Edge gave WWE an opportunity to re-sign him, but the belief now is he is AEW-bound

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

Edge wrestled his last match on his current WWE contract on Friday. His contract expires, according to Edge on the FAN Morning Show, at the end of September. It’s not known if he has any non-compete period afterward, but there is a lot of buzz that he is AEW bound.

PWTorch has learned that Copeland presented to WWE what it would take to retain his services, but WWE declined to meet his request. This has sparked a belief within WWE that he is probably headed to AEW and knew at that time what AEW could offer him (based, perhaps, on conversations with other wrestlers of his star power about AEW pay). Tony Khan is a big fan of Edge and certainly would value adding him to the roster, either as a wrestler or in some other role.

Also, Christian Cage is a longtime friend of Copeland and is prominently featured on AEW TV, so linking them together in some way on TV would be natural.

Edge received the big celebration of his WWE career on Friday’s Smackdown because he’s well-liked within WWE. Management doesn’t resent the possibility that he’ll go to AEW. WWE is always looking for ways to create special segments and episodes and Friday was an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Edge in a positive way and, they hoped, draw a bigger audience than if they had to go with a different main event.

Tony Khan says AEW memo with guidelines and restrictions issued last week won’t change the hard-hitting style of the show

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

AEW CEO Tony Khan made an appearance on The Dan LeBatard Show on Tuesday. During the interview, he was asked about the reported memo that circulated last week, in which unprotected chairshots, spitting, and bleeding in the crowd were banned. In addition, other moves or spots now require approval from a coach (i.e. agent) before they would be allowed to be implemented into a match.

“I want to have a great pro wrestling company,” Khan said. “A hard-hitting pro wrestling company. Those aren’t really crazy changes. It’s nothing that’s going to change the show. It’s really more guidelines for the referees as much as anything else. It’s good stuff for the wrestlers to know.”

The memo circulated backstage was titled “Healthy and Safety Protocols Relating to Matches,” and it went into effect this month.
