Fairfax Co. Candidate Vows To Keep Out Arlington-Style Missing Middle

NORTHERN VIRGINIA — Several candidates running for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in November favor taking steps to make housing more affordable in the county, but no candidate has expressed support for duplicating Arlington County’s Missing Middle Housing plan that went into effect July 1.

Andres Jimenez, the Democratic nominee for Mason District, one of the two Fairfax County magisterial districts that borders Arlington, said Fairfax County needs to do everything it can to create housing that is affordable to people with various income levels in all parts of the county.

But Jimenez, who is an “approved candidate” by the YIMBYs of Northern Virginia, a pro-housing development group, said Fairfax County needs to try to get more housing built near “mass transit and job hubs … before looking to drastically change zoning amongst single family neighborhoods” like what happened in Arlington when county officials approved the Missing Middle Housing plan earlier this year.

Christopher Morgan, who is running as an independent for the Mount Vernon District supervisor’s seat against incumbent supervisor Dan Storck (D), said that when he lived in San Diego several years ago, he saw zoning changes in certain parts of the city that allowed single-family homes to be built in an existing home’s backyard and single-family homes to be demolished to construct multifamily condominiums or apartments on the lots.

“These changes increased the overall housing supply, but universally destroyed the quality of life of many communities,” Morgan said in response to a candidate questionnaire sent out by Fairfax Healthy Communities, a coalition composed of the YIMBYs of Northern Virginia, the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, the Fairfax County branch of the NAACP, the Sierra Club and several other groups. “Trees and habitat vegetation were clear-cut away. Street parking became non-existent.”

The promises of more affordable homes in San Diego never materialized, according to Morgan.

“I know the same problems that I saw first-hand in California will soon plague Arlington County, and I will fight very strongly to protect Fairfax County from those same mistakes,” Morgan said.

In March, the Arlington County Board voted unanimously to approve the Missing Middle Housing plan, a major zoning overhaul that eliminated single-family zoning across the county. It also allowed multifamily structures to be built in neighborhoods “by-right” — buildings that qualify for construction without requiring discretionary approval — that were previously zoned only for single-family detached homes.

While current members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors are not publicly supporting implementing a Fairfax County version of Arlington’s Missing Middle zoning reform, Morgan told Patch that he believes the county leaders and staff are already beginning to wage a “war on single family homes” through their accessory living units, Parking Reimagined and other policies.

While opposing the elimination of single-family zoning, Morgan emphasized that there are places in Fairfax County where officials should look at increasing housing density and where the county should be encouraging the creation of condominiums and apartments with three or more bedrooms. Housing units with three to six bedrooms are essential for families with children and extended families who opt to live in a higher density population area, he said.

“It’s dystopian to expect a family of four to share a 1- or 2-bedroom unit and the county should, via zoning and policy, encourage such larger units,” Morgan said in response to the questionnaire. “These families also require multiple vehicles in order to achieve economic success, and ample parking must be required. We should still be encouraging mass transit options, but as we work to push more families above middle class, we must be honest about what a middle-class lifestyle looks like.”

Jimmy Bierman, a Democrat running for supervisor of the Dranesville District, the other Fairfax County district that borders Arlington, said he’s glad that Arlington County went first on the Missing Middle Housing issue “because the devil is in the details, and we need to better understand what does and doesn’t work to expand our housing options.”

Bierman, who is also a YIMBYs of Northern Virginia-approved candidate, said that lifting single-family zoning restrictions like what happened in Arlington with Missing Middle “has been too often seen as a panacea in and of itself.”

“Simply changing zoning restrictions alone is not going to lead to more multifamily or affordable housing units in a lot of neighborhoods. Far more comprehensive and detailed urban planning will need to occur to actually generate the panoply of housing options that are needed,” Bierman said.

Other Fairfax County Board of Supervisors candidates, in their responses to the Fairfax Healthy Communities questionnaire, applauded Arlington for what they view as the county’s effort to address the housing affordability crisis by passing the Missing Middle Housing plan.

Supervisor Dalia Palchik, the incumbent seeking re-election in the Providence District, said that “watching Arlington address head on their affordability crisis demonstrated the importance of our elected officials taking an aggressive stance to create more affordable housing to build a more accessible and inclusive community.”

“While policies that work in Arlington do not always work in Fairfax, I believe we can follow Arlington’s lead and creatively pursue zoning policies that increase affordability in our community,” Palchik said.

Missing Middle units under consideration by Arlington’s permitting office, though, will not be affordable or subsidized units, and instead will be market-rate. Households making at or above area median income — $128,100 — are the group the county believes could stand to benefit most from missing middle construction.

In response to Fairfax Healthy Communities’ request for his views on Arlington’s Missing Middle Housing plan, Morgan said Arlington’s move to increase the density of housing within neighborhoods whose existing infrastructure was not designed for a sudden population influx will fail and will destroy the quality of life for the areas targeted by Missing Middle housing.

Hicksville Teacher's 1st Children Book Explores Digital Technology

HICKSVILLE, NY — A Hicksville Middle School teacher is now a children’s author. Dr. Alia Kamal Khan is teaching about technology with her book “The Digital Learner: A Saved Story from the Memory of Mr. Time-Bot, the Class Robot!”

Khan’s doctorate dissertation is about educational technology, “which inspired me to write this children’s book,” she told Patch.

In the book, a young girl has problems understanding technology in school.

Find out what's happening in Hicksvillewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

“With the help of Mr. Time-Bot, the class robot, she gets through it,” Khan said.

The ending reveals that the girl is actually a teacher who is falling behind in the world of technology know-how, needing help from a student.

Find out what's happening in Hicksvillewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

As she learned through her doctorate work, there are teachers who are more comfortable than others in dealing with technology.

The book, available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, is also part of the Hicksville Middle School’s library.

“The students do like it a lot,” she said. It’s a book for all ages, but Khan conceded, “It’s more for grades two and up, just because of the reading level.”

It was a two-year process to bring Mr. Time-Bot to fruition, with hopes of more adventures for her lead character.

“I would love to write more books,” she said.

Khan immediately suggested, “looking at the historical perspective of technology, looking at how the future of education might be with all this new technology.”

As a 14-year educator, Khan said this book sends a positive message to students.

“I hope this story really empowers all ages to try things that are new and challenging. Don’t hold yourself back,” she said.

WWE NXT announces new TV deal with The CW

Update —

WWE has officially announced that NXT will be moving to The CW Network starting in October 2024. It's a five-year deal.

Ari Emanuel said on today's TKO conference call that NXT's deal with The CW represents a 70 percent increase in average annual value over the previous deal.

"The CW has made impressive moves over the past year with its live sports programming schedule," WWE President Nick Khan said in a press release. "It's a truly exciting opportunity to expand NXT's audience by bringing the show to broadcast television for the first time in NXT's history."

"We are thrilled to welcome the WWE brand into the CW Sports portfolio as they play an integral role in our mission to bring live sporting events to the network year-round," CW Network President Dennis Miller said. "WWE NXT is a perfect fit for The CW thanks to its dynamic young talent featuring the hottest rising stars in the sport and exhilarating, unpredictable weekly events. The passion and engagement of WWE's fanbase is unmatched, and we are eager to grow that audience as WWE NXT's new home on broadcast television."

Leading into the new deal, WWE has increased the importance of NXT with main roster stars appearing on NXT more frequently.

Original —

It appears that WWE NXT will be moving networks in its next television deal.

PWInsider reports that WWE and The CW are close to reaching a deal for NXT TV rights. The deal is expected to be for around five years and would "easily be the biggest increase for WWE NXT media rights fees ever."

"Multiple sources in the broadcast industry have confirmed that the CW Network and WWE have been in deep discussions for weeks about NXT shifting from its current basic cable home on the USA Network to a traditional broadcast television home, airing live weekly on the CW Network when the brand's current media rights deal ends in September 2024," PWInsider wrote. "The belief among some we have spoken with is the deal is VERY close to being completed with the deal expected to be around five years in length."

NXT has aired on USA Network since 2019. Before that, the show aired weekly on WWE Network.

NXT currently airs on Tuesday nights.

It was reported last month that the NWA had signed two TV deals with The CW, one for NWA Power and one for a reality series. But Haus of Wrestling reported over the weekend that a cocaine spot from the NWA's Samhain pay-per-view could negatively affect those deals.

The CW launched in 2006. It was preceded by UPN and The WB networks.

WWE SmackDown will be leaving Fox and returning to USA Network with its next TV deal starting in October 2024. It remains to be seen where WWE Raw will end up.

Actor Paul Walter Hauser to make in-ring debut at Wrestling Revolver event

Hauser will face Matthew Palmer in a match that will take place at Wrestling Revolver’s Unreal event on November 16. It will air live on Fite TV and take place at the Homenten Glendale Ararat in Los Angeles.

Back in January, Hauser appeared on both AEW Dynamite and AEW Rampage. During an interview on Rampage, Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, and Sonjay Dutt interrupted the segment and after some back and forth, Jarrett smashed Hauser over the head with a guitar. The Best Friends came out for the save, but Jarrett and company had already stolen what was called Hauser’s Golden Globe award, which they carried for weeks following the angle.

Hauser earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal as the title character in the film Richard Jewell. For his role as convicted murderer Larry Hall in the 2022 miniseries Black Bird, he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Hollywood Sign At 100: A History Of The Icon's First Century

HOLLYWOOD, CA — The town’s most famous star looks pretty good for 100.

Civic leaders gathered Tuesday to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Hollywood Sign. The occasion comes as crews began working on a six-week painting project to refresh the sign earlier this month, which is set to wrap up in early November.

Councilmember Nithya Raman, whose district includes the sign, moved for the Los Angeles City Council to declare Oct. 31 as Hollywood Sign Day.

Find out what's happening in Hollywoodwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

“It is a feat to turn 100, no matter who or what you are. The Hollywood Sign, however, has achieved that rare fame that comes from being synonymous with an entire industry, an entire city and a way of life,” Raman said. “To imagine our city without it is truly impossible.”

Here’s a timeline of the sign’s life, with information from city documents and the Hollywood Sign Trust:

Find out what's happening in Hollywoodwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

1923: The sign — which originally spelled out “Hollywoodland” — was erected to promote the namesake residential development that was being built in the hills below.

The sign was lit up for the first time on Dec. 8 by 3,700 light bulbs as part of its originally planned 18-month life. The lights were shut off within the next decade.

Some of the development’s Storybook style homes remain standing today; many of them have been restored.

1944: As the sign became a landmark, the Hollywoodland developers donated a remaining undeveloped 425 acres near the sign to the city. The city added the acreage to Griffith Park the following year.

1949: A plan to repair the blown-down “H” came with the stipulation that the “land” section of the sign would be demolished to spell out “Hollywood,” according to reports at the time.

1973: The city gave official landmark status to the sign as it fell in disrepair — in the ’70s, the top of the “D” and an “O” fell down Mt. Lee, and an arsonist set fire to the bottom of an “L.”

1978: The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce launched a campaign to completely rebuild the sign, with a goal of raising $250,000.

Hugh Hefner hosted a fundraiser at the Playboy mansion to “sell” individual letters for $27,700. Among the benefactors were Alice Cooper and Gene Autry.

The original sign was torn down in August to make way for the new sign’s construction, leaving a three-month period with no sign.

1984: The sign was lit up between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. during the Olympic Games being held in the city, the Los Angeles Times reported.

1992: The state granted distinct rights and responsibilities for the sign’s care to the city (which owns the land it stands on), the Hollywood Chamber (which owns the licensing rights for the sign’s image) and the Hollywood Sign Trust (formed to maintain and improve the sign for public benefit).

1999: The sign, lit up with lights and lasers, was the site of a celebration of the new millennium.

2000: A security system was installed at the sign, featuring an array of CCTV cameras that are monitored round the clock. The move was meant to prevent trespassers and curb the threat of fire. It was upgraded in 2005.

2012: The sign was refreshed with new paint as Hefner offered the final funds needed to purchase and protect 138 acres behind the sign.

2022: The sign was temporarily modified to read “Rams House” to celebrate the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl victory.

Later that year, the sign was lit up with projections for the BET Awards.

On his last day on the job, outgoing mayor Eric Garcetti ordered the creation of a program that would allow the sign to be illuminated on a more regular basis. Mayor Karen Bass quickly reversed course out of concerns about the plan’s legality, the LA Times reported.
