AEW News: Omega responds to WWE running Evolve head to head against Fight for The Fallen (w/Radican’s Analysis)

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

-AEW EVP Kenny Omega spoke out against WWE promoting Evolve 131 head to head against Fight for the Fallen, which is a charity show for victims of gun violence. Regarding WWE’s decision to run Evolve 131 up against Fight for the Fallen, which is set to air for free on B/R Live on July 13.

Omega wrote:

If lining your pockets with blood money is okay, then what’s wrong with trying to undermine a charity show for victims of gun violence? I hear that healthy competition is supposed to be a good thing and yet I can’t help but feel like I’m gonna be sick.

Omega has since taken down the tweet, but he also tweeted that his tweet was directed at the decision makers in wrestling and nobody else. Omega’s original tweet has been deleted, but you can see his followup tweet below:

Radican’s Analysis: It will be interesting to see if there’s anymore sniping back and forth between AEW and WWE talent or executives leading into July 13. Going head to head against a charity show certainly isn’t a good look for WWE and Omega rightly called the company out for taking blood money from Saudi Arabia.

Arena, SummerSlam Results, and Items Advertised by WWE

Tonight, WWE continues its stay in Toronto, Canada as Raw will unfold in the Scotiabank Arena following this past Saturday’s NXT: Takeover and of course SummerSlam last night. Smackdown will find itself here tomorrow night as well. WWE did this in the Scotiabank Arena last year around this time when Raw and Smackdown did back to back nights.

Here are the results from SummerSlam last night:

Kickoff show:

  • Drew Gulak defeated Oney Lorcan to retain the Cruiserweight Championship
  • Buddy Murphy defeated Apollo Crews via DQ as a result of Rowan attacking Murphy (did they even announce it, I don’t know)
  • Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross defeated The IIconics (Peyton Royce & Billie Kay) to retain the Women’s Tag Team Championship

Main Show:

  • Becky Lynch defeated Natalya in a submission match to retain the Raw Women’s Championship
  • Goldberg defeated Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler proceeded to embarrass himself by yelling and Goldberg beat him down twice. What a toolbag.
  • A.J. Styles defeated Ricochet to retain the U.S. Championship.
  • Bayley defeated Ember Moon to retain the Smackdown Women’s Championship.
  • Kevin Owens defeated Shane McMahon. As a result of winning the match, Owens need not quit WWE. Hallelujah.
  • Charlotte Flair defeated Trish Stratus via submission.
  • WWE Champion Kofi Kingston wrestled Randy Orton to a double count-out.
  • “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt defeated Finn Balor
  • Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar to regain the Universal Championship

Here is what is advertised for tonight’s show thus far.

Matches & Segments:

  • The Miz and Dolph Ziggler to face off tonight
  • Bliss & Cross to face Kabuki Warriors in title defense on Raw

Storyline Follow-Up

  • Rollins once again slays The Beast
  • What’s on tap next for The Man?
  • Can The O.C. remain “Too Sweet” after Summerslam

Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler

Last week on Raw, Dolph Ziggler thought he was signing a contract to face the Miz at SummerSlam. When he signed the contract, he didn’t realize the match was taking place tonight. He then thought Shawn Michaels was his SummerSlam opponent as Shawn was present for the contract signing. He said it wasn’t him, and that’s when we found out it was Goldberg. Goldberg defeated Ziggler last night in about a minute and speared him twice after Ziggler kept calling him out. Here he is on Twitter yesterday:

Tonight, we get the match between Miz and Ziggler. They are longtime friends outside the WWE auspices as they are both from Cleveland, OH. and last feuded over the Intercontinental Championship back in 2016.

Frank’s Analysis: I thought the calling out of Goldberg was a bit overdone last night, but at this point Ziggler is such a joke anyway that it doesn’t matter. He’s good fodder at this point, and right for that role. I don’t know what to expect of this match tonight, but they sure emphasized it. At this point it was just the decoy to set up the Goldberg match.

Women’s Tag Team Championship: Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross (champs) vs. Kabuki Warriors (Asuka & Kairi Sane)

Last week on Raw, Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross won a fatal four-way elimination match to capture the Women’s Tag Team Championship. They successfully defended their championship on the kickoff show last night against the former champions, the IIconics (Peyton Royce & Billie Kay). Here they were in a WWE.com exclusive following the match last week and at SummerSlam last night following their win:

Here’s a clip of an Alexa interview on Inside the Ropes ahead of the SummerSlam match:

The Kabuki Warriors loom tonight as they vie for the titles as they did last week in the fatal four-way. They do hold a count-out victory and a non-title pinfall win over the former champs the IIconics, if that means anything.

Frank’s Analysis: Alexa just needs to turn babyface as she’s too likable in these interviews outside the WWE auspices! The partnership with Nikki has grown on me and I’m interested to see where it goes. I feel bad for Asuka and Kairi Sane as I feel like they’re better than a tag team WWE doesn’t take seriously, but we’ll see what happens. It’s better they do this than nothing. Paige being with them is still weird, but we’ll see where that goes.

Seth Rollins Reigns Again

In the main even of SummerSlam last night, Seth Rollins did what he did earlier this year at WrestleMania as he defeated Brock Lesnar to become Universal Champion for the second time. Unlike WrestleMania, the match went about 13 minutes and there were no low blows. Rollins won after hitting multiple stomps. Here are a few WWE.com exclusives of Rollins celebrating his win and an interview discussing what the win meant to him:

As Raw unfolds tonight, we will see what is next for Rollins as he begins his second Universal Championship reign.

Frank’s Analysis: The match was exactly what it needed to be, and the result was the right call. It’ll be interesting to see what opponents are lined up for Rollins as they haven’t exactly built up any heels. I anticipate Brock slides over to Smackdown considering their move to FOX and the announcement of the 20th anniversary show on October 4. Brock certainly was an integral part of the early days of Smackdown during his initial run from 2002-’04.

Next Up for The Man

In the opening match of SummerSlam, Becky Lynch retained the Raw Women’s Championship by beating Natalya in a submission match. She did so by getting Nattie (Natalya) to tap out to the Dis-arm-her.

Ahead of SummerSlam she went on Inside the Ropes and discussed Charlotte Flair, Ronda Rousey, and Nia Jax:

After defeating Natalya, she was interviewed in this WWE.com exclusive:

Like with her boyfriend Seth Rollins, we’ll see what’s next for Becky tonight.

Frank’s Analysis: I can’t see the feud with Natalya continuing, although her calling herself Canada’s new hero could be a way to keep it going, if it’s even worth keeping it rolling. There isn’t exactly a murderer’s row of heel opponents, a similar situation in which Rollins sits at the moment.

The O.C. is Still Too Sweet

The O.C. (U.S. Champion A.J. Styles & Raw Tag Team Champions Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson) continue their run “holding the gold,” if you will, as A.J. retained his U.S. title over Ricochet in what was a bit of a letdown match. Ricochet spent most of the match selling knee injury after a dive early in the match. Ultimately, A.J. won with a Styles Clash. Here they are in a WWE.com exclusive following A.J.’s win:

We’ll find out where the O.C. goes from here.

Frank’s Analysis: It sure feels like Ricochet and A.J. deserve another match, but would it be good? We expected a lot of A.J. vs. Nakamura and it was good, but not as good as we thought it would be. We’ll see, perhaps they take a break and reconvene at a later PPV. It’s anybody’s guess what they do with Gallows and Anderson.

Trish Stratus & Charlotte Flair

This is not an advertised item, but Trish has officially retired from in-ring competition following her loss to Charlotte Flair. Stepping a little out of character, here’s Trish and Charlotte in WWE.com exclusives following their match:

Frank’s Analysis: Normally I don’t like wrestlers stepping out of character, but this was nice on both of their parts. You can tell Charlotte appreciated being able to work with Trish. The match and story were exactly what it needed to be overall.

Other Match Results and Notable Segments from Last Week

I’ll just touch on things that weren’t followed up on during SummerSlam last night.

  • Samoa Joe hijacked Raw until he got an apology from Roman Reigns for accusing him of causing Reigns’ recent misfortunes. When Joe went to the parking lot to confront him, someone sideswiped Reigns’ car.
  • The following night on Smackdown, Buddy Murphy named Rowan as the assailant. Rowan attacked Murphy during his match with Apollo Crew on the kickoff show last night.
  • Andrade defeated Rey Mysterio.
  • Mike Kanellis defeated Maria at a real jacked-up OB/GYN office to win the 24/7 Championship but lost it to R-Truth moments later.
  • The Viking Raiders won another squash match.
  • Smackdown Tag Team Champions New Day (Big E & Xavier Woods defeated Raw Tag Team Champions The O.C. via DQ in a minute. They then paired with Ricochet to take on the entire O.C. (Gallows & Anderson w/A.J. Styles) and lost when Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer on Woods.

Overall Thoughts on Tonight’s Show

We’re coming off of SummerSlam and thus it’s fair to expect the crowd to be hot, similar but not as much as the post-WrestleMania crowd. We’re a couple of months away from Smackdown going to FOX, AEW’s debut on TNT, as well as the recently announced NWA studio wrestling show. You wonder if you’ll start to see changes in the product given all the competition about to unfold and WWE moving to a major network. It’s been a fun 2019 with wrestling overall and it’s about to get even more interesting. We’ll see how things go tonight.

7/6 New Japan G1 Climax Night 1 On-Site Report: Crowd enthusiasm compared to AEW’s shows, reaction to various stars, crowd size, merchandise notes, mood in building

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

G1 CLIMAX 29: NIGHT 1 REPORT
JULY 6, 2019
DALLAS, TEX. AT AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER
REPORT BY DAN KUESTER, PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Commentators: Kevin Kelly, Rocky Romero

The follow are my firsthand observations from tonight’s G1 Climax show in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Arena.

-The presentation of the arena, use of the big screen TVs in house and general experience at American Airlines Arena was great. Well, except they did not bring nearly enough merchandise for fans to buy. They sold out of everything very quickly, especially the Texas themed G1 attire.

-Generally speaking, I can say without question this was the most fun that I have had at any wrestling event at least since I was 14 years old and convinced my father to take me to my first wrestling match, featuring the stars of the Universal Wrestling Federation in Springfield, Missouri.

-I was at both AEW shows (if you consider the first Chicago show an AEW show), and every positive thing those shows had, this show had more of it except in terms of the number of fans in attendance.

-I would estimate the attendance at about 5,000. I feel as though if the WWE camera crews shot this, the show would’ve appeared to have been in front of a full house. From what I can gather from talking to people, this was not a major concern for the AXS television crew.

-The crowd that was present absolutely loved New Japan pro wrestling and helped add to a very special show.

-Interestingly, there were noticeable boos when they showed Kenny Omega as a former G1 Champion- Maybe by a five-to-one margin cheers, but he was the only one that got booed at all.

-The opening tag match certainly benefited from a very excited crowd. Jeff Cobb and Tomohiro Ishii are probably between tenth and twentieth on the NJPW depth chart. The way this crowd reacted to them squaring off was the equivalent of a very top main event. The reaction to Jushin Liger on his retirement tour was overwhelmingly positive and really cool to experience. He received a sustained standing ovation which is well-deserved.

-Lance Archer had some support from his hometown crowd, but Will Ospreay was the superstar to this crowd and they were disappointed to see him lose.

-Both Sanada and Zach Sabre Jr. were super over and I had this match rated considerably higher than Sean did. I was watching that match thinking it was going to go 30 minutes, so the finish caught me off guard which live was pretty cool.

-This crowd felt Kenta was a returning superstar and you could see him gain comfort and confidence as that match progressed.

-As for the main event, I don’t know what you can say. It was so incredible seeing two of the all-time greats in front of a crowd that can be best described as apoplectic. I was at ALL IN and folks talked about the awesome moment when Kota Ibushi and Rey squared off. Take that crowd response and multiply it by about 2.5 and you have the moment when Tanahashi and Okada were getting ready to square off. It’s really difficult to describe the folks who were not there live how amazing that was.

-Everyone I spoke with after the card was just in a celebratory mood because they knew they had seen something pretty remarkable. If NJPW runs another G1 show in the USA I can’t recommend attending strongly enough.

I would suggest anyone who wants to read detailed match results, please check out Sean Radican’s excellent report: RADICAN’S 7/6 NJPW G1 Climax 29: Night 1 report: coverage of A Block action headlined by Ibushi vs. KENTA, Okada vs. Tanahashi

Monday Night Raw

– Seth Rollins opened Raw this week to celebrate his championship win at SummerSlam. He credited the fans with giving him the edge he needed to defeat Lesnar especially after being beaten down by Lesnar heading into Sunday. Seth was interrupted by The OC. A.J. Styles grabbed the microphone and said they were just out there to congratulate him on his victory and while he may not have to worry about Lesnar anymore, he does have to worry about him. Styles challenged him to a match and after thinking about it for a second, Seth agreed. Styles went to shake his hand, but Rollins hesitated with Gallows and Anderson in the ring watching closely. They climbed out of the ring, and Styles tried shaking his hand again indicating it will just be a one on one match, no need to worry. Rollins shook his hand and Gallows and Anderson quickly jumped up onto the ring apron and Styles made a quick lunge and Rollins to spook him. The OC laughed at Seth’s nervousness and mocked him for being scared as the segment ended. So, in the main event it was Rollins vs A.J. Styles, who didn’t come alone. The match went for a couple of minutes before Seth appeared to be taking control and setting Styles up for a Stomp when Gallows and Anderson jumped in the ring and attacked. Seth was in a three on one beat down until Ricochet came out to help him. Ricochet was dispatched of and then Braun Strowman’s music played and he took out all three members of The OC one by one clearing the ring. Raw went off the air with Rollins. Strowman, and Ricochet standing tall together.

– Brock Lesnar was shown to have a locker backstage, but we never saw him. Instead, we saw Paul Heyman emerge from the locker room with an announcement. He said WWE made a declarative statement that Lesnar gets no title rematches against Seth. Heyman stammered trying to articulate his frustration and when he couldn’t he just turned around and stormed back into the locker room.

– Sasha Banks made her return to WWE television this week. She has not been seen since WrestleMania before Raw this week. The segment started with Natalya in the ring with her arm in a sling. Natalya acknowledged the match she lost against Becky and SummerSlam, she said she has a dislocated elbow, and she doesn’t regret a single thing she said about Becky. She went to change the subject to her father, she said she had a dream that her dad spoke to her and told her how proud he was of her and said it was one year to the day that her father passed away. Sasha Banks’ music interrupted and the place went nuts. To the sound of Corey Graves protesting Sasha, she made her way down to the ring, she gave Natalya a hug, and asked for the microphone before attacking Natalya. Sasha removed her purple wig to reveal a new blue hair color and continued the attack on Natalya. Becky would eventually come down to try and help Natalya, but Sasha had a chair by this point and she turned her attack on Becky who would be the victim of around ten chair shots, including one that accidentally hit her in the back of the head.

Smackdown Live

– Kevin Owens was the first person to appear on Smackdown tonight. He walked down the to the ring to a huge ovation by the fans in Toronto and he was there to celebrate beating Shane McMahon. Owens talked about his family being in the front row at SummerSlam and getting to experience the crowd that night. He laughed as he acknowledged his low blow to Shane, then turned his attention to the King of the Ring tournament. He talked about loving it growing up and said it’s just as important to him as winning any of the championships he’s won in WWE. Shane McMahon interrupted. Shane called Owens a cheater and told him that’s something he’ll have to live with for the rest of his life now. Shane then fined Owens $100,000 for attacking Elias who was an official. Owens was angry and said that $100,000 may just be a new car for Shane, but that’s everything for his family like his kids’ college or a down payment on a house. Shane left without a care. After the commercial Owens walked into Shane’s backstage office. Shane threatened to sue Owens if he hit him as he antagonized Owens to do so. Owens appeared frustrated before saying “Let’s make it 105” before grabbing a chair and smashing it through a television. Later, a match between Owens and Samoa Joe was announced. Just before the match began, Elias wandered down to the ring to be a guest official at ringside, just like he was at SummerSlam. At one point, Owens had the match won, but Elias grabbed the referee and threw him out of the ring. Owens yelled at him before Joe rolled him up and Elias counted the quick three for the win.

– The New Day had a match scheduled with The Revival. Kofi was going to accompany Big E and Xavier Woods for their match. After they entered the ring, Randy Orton walked out to address Kofi. Orton said Kofi ran away from a fight on Sunday right in front of his wife and kids. He said one day Kofi’s sons will grow up and ask him why he took the easy way out and he’ll have to look them in the eye and tell them that he can’t beat Randy Orton. Orton said he’d give him another chance tonight, then proposed a six man tag match where he would join The Revival against all three members of the New Day. Orton and The Revival dominated the match, primarily against Xavier Woods who would eventually be pinned after getting hit with a Shatter Machine. After the match The Revival attacked Big E, Kofi came in for the save, but was quickly hit with an RKO by Orton.

Come on Roman… Really?

Dash Wilder with some more not-so-subtle complaints about WWE and taking digs at fickle fans.

https://twitter.com/DashWilderWWE/status/1160737116290191360

•Closing Commentary

•So after every Aleister Black match, we’re just going to get him sitting in a dark room and begging for someone to knock again? You can do better than that WWE. Black beats Cesaro, he goes back to his room. He beats Sami Zayn last week, he’s back in the room this week. If you’re going to put him in the room, can you at least give him something better to say then beg someone to knock on the door again? It’s just not much in terms of character development for him to go kick someone’s head off their shoulders, then waltz back into his room to beg someone else to challenge him.

•Okay time for a Roman rant, this time about a simple four word Tweet! Roman retweeted a fan praising him for being able to have a five-star match on any night with any opponent and Roman responded simply with “Best Performance Fighter Alive.” I hate this so much. First, retweeting fan praise is just something that bothers me. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but it comes across as insecure in my eyes. I also despised him calling himself a performance fighter. That’s going to be Vince’s next “sports entertainment” or “WWE Superstar” and I absolutely hate it. YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CALL YOURSELF THAT. It’s unbelievable how hard WWE (and now the WRESTLERS) avoid the word wrestling! It’s just baffling! (Side note: I blame Wade Keller entirely for making this a pet peeve of mine.)

•Sasha had a good reaction upon her return, but I can’t stop replaying what Corey Graves said about her when she came out. Graves’ comments were meant to be heelish, but they rang completely true to me and probably to most fans who know why she actually went away following WrestleMania. Graves said she took her ball and went home and pouted. What part of that is false? I know she’s supposed to be a heel now, but that’s not heel heat to me, it’s go away heat. On top of that it, fairly or unfairly, looks like throwing a fit will get you what you want in WWE right now. Between Sasha, Gallows and Anderson, and The Revival, the people who appeared to have major complaints with WWE are suddenly getting big pushes by management. It could be a coincidence or this entire analysis could be unfair, but that’s the appearance. It’s happening because there is new competition (AEW) with money who would scoop any of those names up in a second, so I get it, but having Corey accentuate it to me wasn’t a good idea.

Warner Bros. scraps ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ John Cena film

Warner Bros. will not release the Coyote vs. Acme film starring John Cena despite the project being completed and the movie testing well with audiences.

The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline were among those reporting Thursday that Warner Bros., a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, was scrapping the movie in favor of taking a $30 million tax write-off on the $70 million to $72 million cost of the project, a similar tact that the company took with a Batgirl film that was also not released as originally planned.

Coyote vs. Acme was an animated and live-action hybrid in the style of Who Framed Roger Rabbit with Cena starring in the film directed by Dave Green and produced by James Gunn.

Deadline says that the movie received test scores 14 points higher than the average family film with audiences, and calls the decision not to release it "another maneuver by the David Zaslav-run Warner Bros. Discovery to kill movies."

Deadline wrote:

We’re told that the cash-strapped Warners finds that it’s not worth the cost to release the film theatrically or to sell to other buyers (and there are parties who are interested for their own streaming services; we hear Amazon kicked the tires). After reporting a mixed third quarter, the best means for Warners money is a tax write-off. At one point, Coyote vs. Acme was dated for theatrical release on July 21, 2023, before getting pulled; that date was taken by Barbie, which went on to become Warner Bros’ biggest hit of all-time at $1.4 billion worldwide.

After losing to Solo Sikoa in dominant fashion at last Saturday's Crown Jewel event and with the SAG-AFTRA strike now over, it is presumed that Cena's most recent WWE run has come to an end.

Cena posted on Instagram Thursday with an image that could be referencing Coyote vs. Acme being locked away, or stepping away from WWE with the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike:
