Balancing Speed & Quality: Where R&D Should Pump the Brakes or Hit the Gas

Steve Jobs once said, “Innovation is not about saying yes to everything. It’s about saying no to all but the most crucial features.”

As part of the I.D. product development team at Apple, I had the remarkable experience of observing this philosophy firsthand. I sat in on many design team meetings where new and innovative products were reviewed, evaluated and refined. In one very memorable case, a product was slated to go to market and had already entered the manufacturing process – with go live in just two weeks to support a very tight subsequent launch date. Steve Jobs was in the meeting and asked a simple question: Why does the product have two arms? When no one had a legitimate answer to the question or could present a valid argument for dual arms, he made the hard and fast decision to postpone the announcement and the ship date to ensure the product was right.

It was a very difficult decision. But, as I look back, I know it was the right decision – and I have no doubt the team does as well. Sometimes when you’re in mid-race, a pit stop doesn’t feel like the right call. But oftentimes, it is the only call to avoid delays, or worse yet, commercial product failures.

Of course, Steve Jobs was famous for meetings and decisions like this one. And he set the tone for an entire industry with his quest for perfection. I have always admired his penchant for challenge and his alignment to gut instinct. And I often find myself asking similar questions in the innovation process as a result. Without fail, one of those questions is always this:

Is It the Right Product? 

The answer to this critical question is always informed by still more questions: Does the product pass the litmus test from the standpoint of all the factors that matter: Design, functionality, quality, price, usability, time-to-market, relevance to the problem being solved, etc.? By asking these questions, you will make the most powerful call on speed versus quality and when one should win over the other. But, for those who are a bit newer at this, the calls can be tricky, so let’s consider the nuances. 

Roadmaps are Key, but Judgment Calls Trump Every Time 

Good product development leaders have a solid roadmap or blueprint when they start the development process. The roadmap includes the brief highlighting the goals and objectives of the product, as well as the timelines, approval gates and leadership sign off. And the roadmap serves as a critical guardrail for streamlined execution and successful launch. But it should never take the place of sound judgement when it comes to gate or Go/No Go decisions. Is the product the right product? Does it add value to society as a whole or are you creating electronic junk for the landfill? Is it being rushed to market when it would be better served with more time for incremental prototype iterations and refinements? Is it the best product it can be? Bottom line, if it does not pass that critical test, fast tracking is the wrong answer.

If It Doesn’t Work, It Won’t Sell

Design and aesthetics are critical to the development process. When the customer falls in love with a product because of the elegant experience, it promises a strong showing. But that showing can be short-lived if the product doesn’t also work as advertised. For this reason, engineering is a vital player in the product development mix and support for the iterative engineering process can make or break the product’s commercial success. Fortunately, rapid prototyping to allow for design and engineering efficacy, as well as speed in the testing process enables quality to go hand-in-hand with design elegance. 

Price Matters

In the development process, price is often the last consideration when, in fact, it should be among the first. Indeed, unvetted pricing is a crucial error and failure to align to an appropriate market price is irresponsible. This is why I always recommend partnering with marketing and product management to assess the proper market segmentation, competitive analysis and persona alignment as a baseline for the pricing exercise. The process is a lot like a marriage – it takes time and work to drive symbiotic alignment, but the end result is pretty special.

Don’t Let Speed be the Enemy of Good

Building the best product gets harder all the time. It used to take a year to get to market, and now it can be achieved in 6 months or less! Consumer demand for customized products, right now is a key driver, and the market mandates can’t be ignored. But, I believe companies that do speed well do it with a critical eye for what it takes to do it well. Deliberate planning against a blueprint, aligned resources and expertise and an iterative process must be applied with enthusiasm because speed can be a double-edged sword and it can backfire. 

I have seen products go fast – like when Mercedes delivered a next gen C-Class model car in under 24 months. And I have seen products go slowly. Take Bang & Olufsen, for example. The speaker company worked on a single new speaker for two years before shipping. Both were critically acclaimed for quality and market success – but they both took the right amount of time to bring the right product to market. 

Speed can be done well, but it is also a delicate balancing act.  One of my favorite examples is a product I worked on at Oculus. While in development, we learned that the lens holder for AR/VR units had to be built to within microns or it would wreak havoc on the equilibrium of the system. For this reason, 3D printing wouldn’t work to enable testing of the prototypes. We had to hit pause, review and refine the right process to enable the proper functionality and tolerance for testing and then go forward. While it took considerably longer than it would have had we leveraged faster methods like 3D printing, we would have gotten to the end of the process with a product that didn’t work due to failed tolerances. 

Applying the right methods and expertise and working with partners who understand the criticality of both speed and quality is vital. Partners like digital manufacturer, Fictiv, hit 10x tighter tolerances, within +/- 0.0002 to meet highly stringent customer specs for precision tooling – and 97% on time metrics for on time delivery of prototype parts. They bring both quality and speed to a traditional process that’s been rife with delays and challenges. 

Operating with a sense of urgency is as critical as understanding the vision and goals for the product. But that urgency can’t get in the way of feature, function and market delivery veracity. Plenty of companies test the boundaries of speed and quality – but few companies come out on top. Apply these simple tricks and you’ll be far better equipped to win the race without running out of gas because you skipped a pit stop.

During the discussion, the WWE Superstar and longtime pro wrestling veteran spoke about his favorite comedy segment, if he tries getting talent to break character, a possible heel turn and more.

On his favorite comedy segment: “Probably Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar. I come to Gorilla and Paul was there. He’s like, ‘Hey, we got a bet going on.’ I was like, ‘What bet?’ He’s like, ‘That you can make Brock laugh.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘We’re not going to tell him what you’re gonna say, we don’t want to hear what you want to say. We just go.’ I said, ‘Man, I think we should let Brock know what we’re gonna do.’ He said, ‘Nope, we’re not gonna let Brock know it all.’ And that was the most impromptu thing that just came off like sliced bread. It was just great.”

On if he tries to get people to break character: “I haven’t tried to break anybody, it just happens. Everybody got a funny bone. It is all timing. And I think a lot of people when they’re in a promo with me or they’re in a backstage with me, I think their guard is up so much. Because of that, it’s easy to penetrate. When you try not to do something too hard, too good, you end up doing it. So it’s that reverse psychology type thing. So you have to just be yourself. I’m gonna be myself.”

On a possible heel turn: “There’s a part of me that does want to turn heel again. I think it’s a selfish part so that people can see me as a heel, just because a couple of generations have just known me as R-Truth the fun guy, the comedic guy. A lot of people have not seen that side of me that can still be brought out. The only time I went to talk about turning heel [they said] ‘I don’t think people want to see you as a heel, you to make people feel good.’ There’s a part of me that wants to turn heel, selfishly, because I can be a good heel, I can be an asshole. But there’s so many bad guys, you gotta be one of the good ones. Everybody’s a bad guy. It’s easy to be a bad guy. The selfish part of me would love to turn heel and be a heel, but the majority of me is like I could never be a heel. People would think it’s cool if I did something bad, if I did something heelish they would think it’s cool. I smoked a cigarette and they thought that was the coolest thing on TV. To be a heel you have to get that real, genuine hatred heel heat. Mine would be more of like, they will want me to bash somebody’s head in. Selfishly, I would love to see it one time, but I don’t have to.”

On nearly losing his leg to infection while out injured: “At one point I thought it was [the end of my career], because it was when I caught the infection. A lot of people thought I just tore my quad. I did tear the quad tendon, but a couple of weeks out when I go to get the stitches out it wasn’t healing. And that’s when they found out I had five different bacteria like staph, MRSA, their cousins and kinfolks and relatives. Yeah, it was bad. It was so bad the doctor wouldn’t even give me a high five. I know it sounds crazy that I want a high five with the doctor. He’s like you don’t have time for high fives, this is serious. I just went to get my stitches out. He said, ‘What are you doing this afternoon?’ I said ‘I’m gonna pick my kids up.’ He said ‘Can somebody else go do it?’ I’m like, why? [He said] ‘We need to take you to surgery now.’ So everything went from haha to you better be ready. It was serious. There was a chance I could lose my leg. That’s how serious it got. The infection was that bad that he thought they would have to amputate if they couldn’t get it slowed down. I was on antibiotics that was like, it was $4,700 a week for it. I was on the heavy stuff. I had a PICC line for the first 6 weeks. Deep down it was like it might be going. He told my wife if we don’t get this under control we are going to have to think of other options. My wife said what other options? He said amputation. I’m like what the f*ck? But that’s when I was thinking I may never come back to this, how can I adapt? It was scary but it’s a part of life. I think it was moving so fast that I just took it as it came.”

AJ Francis Re-Signs With TNA Wrestling

AJ Francis has received top dollar to keep his talents under the TNA Wrestling promotional umbrella.

Heading into the New Year, former WWE Superstar AJ “Top Dolla” Francis was entering free agency, following the expiration of his contract with TNA Wrestling.

In an update, Sports Illustrated is reporting that the pro wrestling star has re-signed with TNA.

“TNA has taken care of me over the last year,” Francis said. “A year ago, I wasn’t the most sought after free agent. A year ago, people thought I wasn’t going to wrestle anymore. A year ago, people thought that my wrestling career might be done. And a year ago, TNA took me in for their very first show, Hard To Kill in (Las) Vegas. That was the very first night that I interacted with Joe Hendry. One year later, Joe Hendry’s the biggest star in wrestling. He can still send me a box of cigars for that whenever he wants.”

Francis continued, “It’s been a blessing with the fact that TNA has done so much for me in the last year. Obviously, this is a business. It’s not called the wrestling friendship. It’s called the wrestling business. I always wanted to go back to TNA. Even though over the past week, I’ve made it clear that I could go anywhere. There were feelers out for me potentially going over to AEW, maybe going back to NXT because I never really got a run in NXT, maybe go back to SmackDown. Obviously going to Netflix for Raw would have been cool too. But there was a lot of options out on the table for me. TNA just feels like the best place for me. TNA has always since the day that I got there changed people’s perception of me. My last match in TNA was for the TNA World Title, an absolute banger of a match in the main event of Final Resolution against Nic Nemeth.”

AEW Referenced During Heated CM Punk & Seth Rollins Confrontation On WWE Raw (12/30/24)

The confrontation between Seth Rollins and CM Punk at the end of RAW became heated.

In the main event segment, Rollins began by addressing Punk’s departure from WWE, mocking him for “taking his ball and going home” and questioning whether Punk would be able to stick around this time.

Punk wound up coming to the ring to remind Seth that other top WWE Superstars like Steve Austin and Becky Lynch had made their own decisions to leave and return. Punk went on to suggest that Seth’s commitment may not be as steadfast as he claims. He teased that next Monday, he would make a “boatload” of money and make Seth a “victim.”

Rollins countered this by accusing Punk of abandoning the company and taking money from the “competition” (AEW), while also criticizing Punk for airing out WWE’s dirty laundry on Colt Cabana’s podcast. Seth’s jabs seemed to focus on the idea that Punk’s choices ultimately led to his downfall in AEW.

Punk responded by revealing his frustrations with Vince McMahon and WWE, claiming that he left because he was tired of working in a toxic environment.

The segment came to a close when Seth called Punk a “cancer” to any locker room. Both men stood face-to-face as the show came to a close.

First-Ever WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion To Be Crowned At 1/13 Raw On Netflix, Tourney Finals Set

History will be made on January 13, 2025.

It will mark the date the first-ever WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion will be crowned.

During the historic WWE Raw on USA Network finale from a sold out Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on Monday, December 30, Dakota Kai defeated Zoey Stark to advance to the finals of the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship.
