From Mainstays To Closed Eateries, Readers Share Favorite Restaurants In Vienna

VIENNA, VA — One of the highlights of living in Vienna is undoubtedly the variety of restaurants diners can find. The town has a mix of new restaurants and longstanding places that have a lasting legacy. But residents may feel nostalgia as well for restaurants that are no longer open.

We surveyed readers about their favorite new and longstanding restaurants. In the longstanding restaurants category, restaurants receiving multiple nominations were Vienna Inn, Anita’s New Mexican Style Food, Cafe Renaissance, The Virginian, Pazzo Pomodoro, Plaka Grill and Ristorante Bonaroti.

Vienna Inn is one of the older businesses in town. Open since 1960, readers enjoy Vienna Inn’s old fashioned, homey feel and inexpensive food, including the classic chili dogs and chili mac.

Christine Fehd says there are “many reasons” Vienna Inn is the best longstanding restaurant.

“I always appreciate the history of this establishment,” Fehd shared. “They are so generous to Madison HS. There are no surprises with the menu or service. Cheapest 3 egg omelette around!”

“Solid consistent food and reasonably priced. Love that they’ve added a few salads to the menu,” added reader Kathy Isaac.

Cafe Renaissance delights diners with its French menu and personable service, including by owner Saeed Abtahi. Kathleen Sheridan enjoys the restaurant’s tea service offered on two Saturdays each month.

“The staff and owner are amazing. The cocktails are delicious! The quality of the food and the service is unbeatable,” an anonymous reader shared.

Ristorante Bonaroti is another longtime restaurant, serving up Italian food for over three decades. Reader Robert says the restaurant has “longstanding excellent food and service.”

Another Italian favorite is Pazzo Pomodoro. Reader Valerie Kappler says the restaurant has “great food. Great staff. Easy neighborhood feel.”

Reader Suzy supports Pazzo Pomodoro because it is “family owned” and “the food is always good and the service is excellent.”

On the fast casual side, Plaka Grill satisfies cravings for Greek food. Chef and owner Peter Drosos is a Madison High School graduate whose family has been in Vienna since 1955. Drosos brought his culinary training from Athens, Greece.

“I love Mediterranean food and Plaka does it right. It has been my favorite restaurant in Vienna and I still remember the first time I ate there. I had to go back the very next day for a repeat!” shared reader Dee.

The Virginian, a mainstay since 1965, continues to be a favorite for breakfast. Readers praised the restaurant’s quality service.

“They make a great, old fashioned but great tasting breakfast. There is something for everyone,” reader Sharon M said.

“Always delicious food and friendly service,” added reader Louise.

Readers also shared their favorite restaurants that are no longer around. Amphora Restaurant, which closed in 2021 after 44 years, and Bazin’s on Church were the most missed restaurants. The Maple Room is the new restaurant open in the former location. Bazin’s on Church closed in April after 18 years and was replaced by Evelyn Rose.
