Pool Slides are loads of fun, always ready for action. Since they are not mechanical, we don’t often think of maintenance or repair issues – but they do exist.

In the last ten years, pool slide construction materials have changed, and this has led to presumably less maintenance or repair issues.

For instance, slides are no longer made from a fiberglass shell, with a thin gelcoat surface. Rotomolded polyethylene, or thermoplastic acrylic surfaces are used nowadays, with the color all the way through. And ladders are different too – gone are the flimsy aluminum legs, most slides now have a closed ladder design, which not only looks better, but is safer too.

Nonetheless, even these new style pool slides will need cleaning, maintenance and repairs. And, there are thousands of older pool slides installed in America, in need of some tender loving care.

So then – here’s a short article on how to clean and maintain a pool slide, and some information on making some common pool slide repairs on your own.

Pool Slide Cleaning

Cleaning a pool slide is needed every few months to keep the original luster of your pool slide. Ladder treads and the top of the slide deck can catch dust and dirt, held fast by air borne oils and pollutants. Hair products, skin lotion and tanning oil residues can be left behind by users, and your slide could become the occassional target for birds flying overhead. The slide legs, which can be powder coated steel or aluminum, can develop scale or rust on the surfaces or around nuts, bolts and flanges.

Pool slides get dirty – and need at least an annual cleaning.

For all surfaces, if you clean it often, you will only need to use a small amount of dish soap and a soft cloth. For a deeper cleaning, you can gently use a granulated chlorine powder (not pool shock!), like Bon Ami or Clorox powder. Be careful not to scrub too hard, and use only a soft cloth. Windex (Ammonia) can be used to bring a polish or quick wipe downs. You also can use Formula 409 or Fantastik cleaners.

Don’t use abrasive scrubbing pads, and don’t use vinegar, Lysol, Pinesol, or other general purpose cleaners or disinfectants to clean a pool slide. Whichever cleaner you use, don’t use too much, to keep the residue from getting into the pool. Some cleaners contain phosphates and nitrates that are best kept out of your pool.

Steel or Aluminum ladders and legs can be cleaned with the same cleaner, and rinsed onto the pool deck. Often, a quick wipe with a soft clean cloth and some windex is all that’s needed. Use Bon Ami for scale build-up on aluminum.

For saltwater pools, indoor pools or pools by the ocean, it is recommended that the slide surfaces be rinsed daily to remove salt buildup. Cleaning schedules should be accelerated too, to keep the slide looking good.

Rinse slide well, then tape a heavy plastic trash bag onto the bottom of the slide, to catch soapy rinse water. Bonus tip – empty the bag before it gets too full!

Pool Slide Maintenance

Once per year, make a pool slide inspection – for safety and maintenance.

  1. Check tightness on all bolts, and inspect closely for any problems.
  2. Check the water supply system for leaks or worn components.
  3. Check that warning labels are still readable, not torn or faded.
  4. Check ladder treads for any sign of wear, yield or fatigue.
  5. Check the slide surfaces for any cracks or chips.
  6. Check the bolts and nuts for any scale or rust.
  7. Climb the ladder and inspect it top-side.
  8. Check water supply jet direction.

Pool Slide Repairs

  • Surface Scratches – Very light scratches, scuff marks and haze can be hand polished with Permatex Plastic Cleaner or Gel-Glass. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Clean cotton cloth works best for applying the polish and buffing. Turtle Wax white polishing compound can also be used for deeper scuffs and scratches.
  • Surface Cracks – Newer rotomolded and acrylic slides rarely crack, but if they do, it can be fixed. It requires a plastic welder and PE plastic which can be purchased in flat rods. After preparation, new material of a similar color is melted into the crack, sanded and polished. Fiberglass slide cracks are more common. It can be small stress cracks in the Gelcoat surface, or in rare cases, the fiberglass shell itself can become cracked. Gelcoat repair kits can be purchased, or your slide could be completely recoated, by a local boat repair company. Fiberglass repair kits are also available, commonly sold for fiberglass boat hull or car panel repairs.
  • Ladder & Legs – For steel legs, (used on the larger pool slides) if rust develops around bolts or flanges, it should be sanded and touched up iwith Rustoleum. Matching paint can be purchased from the manufacturer. Steps or treads that show any sign of stress, or are bent or bowed should be replaced. Replace any stripped broken or loose bolts or deck lags. It’s recommended to use only hardware from the original manufacturer.
  • Water Supply Issues – Modern slides no longer use the skinny 1/4 inch diameter hose and those tiny jets. New slides may have a 1 inch pipe, which rarely requires replacement. Jet nozzles may clog in areas of hard water, and may need to be reamed clean. Connection gaskets will need replacement at some point, as will the valve that turns on the water to the slide. Older slides can purchase a complete slide hose / parts kit to replace the 1/4 inch hose, gaskets and slide jets.

Remember that pool slides have a weight limit of 200-275 lbs. Exceed this limit and the slide could become damaged, or the slider could become injured. For more on safe and intended use of your pool slide, please see the owner’s manual.

These novel product segments also include shaft grounding rings, which ensure excellent protection of the bearings and gearing of electrical machines over their operating life. Through close cooperation with vehicle manufacturers and system suppliers, as well as intensive development work, KACO offers a portfolio of shaft grounding rings ranging from single washers to complex customer-specific solutions with various carrier parts. The new modular system convinces the individually optimizable interaction between impedance over service life as well as the minimization of friction losses.

KACO’s modular system of shaft grounding rings, specially developed for the electrification of vehicle drives, ensures electrical connection and thus permanent equipotential bonding without the risk of damaging currents in bearings and gears. It thus avoids bearing and gear damage due to electrical current transfer and prevents noise in the medium frequency range by reliably discharging shaft voltages and currents to electrical masses. In addition to providing elementary protection for machine elements, KACO’s shaft grounding rings also make a significant contribution to EMC shielding in the vehicle.
The modular construction kit offers a selection of different options so that each application can be individually solved. The solutions are less expensive because the number of components has been significantly reduced. The modular system available today offers optimum grounding in the form of a single grounding element (NMP), standard designs with metal housings (SMP, DMP), or a customer-specific assembly.

The various versions differ in their composition (depending on customer specifications, application location/type, and value-added function). Possible applications are without metal part (NMP*), with one metal part (SMP*), and with two or more metal parts (DMP*). Furthermore, the customer can decide whether the carrier part is to be mounted on the rotor shaft (outer rotation) or in the housing of the electric motor (inner rotation).

Shaft grounding rings from KACO are not only optimized for the specifications of electric drive trains in a dry environment but can also be used for applications in an oily environment. Applications with circumferential speeds of up to 45 m/s and for ambient temperatures from -40 to 140°C are already in series use. Optimizations and further solutions for higher circumferential speeds and temperatures are being tested, but today’s series production designs are covering almost all current applications to date.

As shown in diagram 1, the electrical impedance in the dry state is well below 5 Ω between the shaft and housing at a running time of over 3,500 hours. A customer-specific speed profile with circumferential speeds of up to 45 m/s is applied. Compared to other solutions, shaft grounding rings from KACO thus offer excellent long-term performance at an extremely low resistance level, which can be implemented very cost-effectively depending on the customer’s installation situation.

The products developed by KACO thus provide effective bearing and gear protection, by significantly reducing the impedance between the shaft and housing over the entire service life. Furthermore, they are independent of the direction of rotation of the rotor shaft and are therefore equally suitable for both forward and reverse drive. Due to its specialization in the development and production of a modular system of grounding rings, KACO is an optimal system and development partner.

KACO has worked closely with vehicle manufacturers and system suppliers to demonstrate the performance of its portfolio of shaft grounding rings on special test rigs built for this purpose. Measurement methods and new evaluation algorithms have been developed for the specific requirements of e-mobility. KACO’s testing capabilities for shaft grounding rings include application-specific tests as well as advanced mechanical, chemical, and climatic tests. Spa Bromine and Spa Shock: Building a Bromine Bank

Bromine is best for spas and hot tubs for many reasons. It’s more stable in hot water and is affected less by pH fluctuations. There is one trick you should know about using spa bromine. I’m speaking of building a bromine bank. The bank is actually a reserve of sodium bromide ions in the water. For bromine to be effective, enough bromides need to be available.

Sodium Bromide

Each time you drain your spa or hot tub, your bromide bank goes to zero. To build the level back up again, you simply add granular sodium bromide. Brom Booster is 100 percent granular sodium bromide. Use 2 ounces per 500 gallons to build up the bromide bank in your spa.

You could allow the bromine to come up slowly on its own, from the dissolving bromine tablets, but it can take days or weeks before you begin to see a bromine reading in a spa or hot tub.

You could also crush up 5 or 6 bromine tablets in a heavy plastic bag and pour that in the hot tub to raise bromide levels, but it’s easier and safer to shake in a capful or two of our Brom Booster.

Spa Shock

The other side of the bromine equation involves activating the bromide ions with spa shock, which converts them to hypobromous acid, the killing form of bromine.

In the normal three-part bromine system, a spa owner starts with a residual of bromide ions in the water and then adds the bromine tablets to a feeder or floater. There is no home test for measuring bromide ions in your spa, just add the recommended dosage for your spa size.

Shocking weekly with spa shock activates the bromide or converts it into hypobromous acid, or HObr. Once HObr has attacked a contaminant in the water, most are reduced back to a bromide ion again, where the cycle begins anew.

Spa Tablets

The beauty of In The Swim bromine tablets, as detailed in this post, is that they contain 27 percent chlorine! This acts as a built-in oxidizer to keep the bromide ions constantly converting a continuous supply of HObr.

So, you don’t really need to shock a spa or hot tub to “activate” our bromine tablets. However, I do recommend that all spas be shocked weekly, more for sanitation purposes, but also to ensure adequate conversion of bromide ions.

You will find that after oxidation of your bromides using a non-chlorine spa shock, your bromine level will spike, and that’s because you are really shocking with bromine! The non-chlorine shock is oxidizing contaminants when added, but quickly mates up with free floating sodium bromide ions to create HObr, which is when the real fun begins!
