Adhesives: feathers replace petroleum

Adhesives are almost always based on fossil raw materials such as petroleum. Researchers at Fraunhofer have recently developed a process that allows to utilize keratin for this purpose. This highly versatile protein compound can be found, for instance, in chicken feathers. Not only can it be used to manufacture a host of different adhesives for a variety of applications, but the processes and end products are also sustainable and follow the basic principles underlying a bioinspired circular economy. The project, developed together with Henkel addresses a billion-dollar market.

Adhesives are found nearly everywhere: in sports shoes, smartphones, floor coverings, furniture, textiles or packaging. Even auto windshields are glued into place using adhesives. Experts recognize more than 1,000 different types of adhesives. These can bond almost every imaginable material to another. Adhesives weigh very little and so lend themselves to lightweight design. Surfaces bonded with adhesive do not warp because, unlike with screw fastenings, the load is distributed evenly. Adhesives do not rust, and seal out moisture. Surfaces bonded with adhesive are also less susceptible to vibration. Added to which, adhesives are inexpensive and relatively easy to work with.
Feathers from poultry meat production

Traditionally, adhesives have almost always been made from fossil raw materials such as petroleum. The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB has recently adopted a different approach. Researchers there have been using feathers as a base material instead of petroleum. Feathers are a by-product of poultry meat production. They are destroyed or mixed into animal feed. But feathers are far too valuable to go to waste because they contain the structural protein keratin. This biopolymer is found in animals and makes up talons, claws, hooves or feathers. Its fibrous structure is extremely strong.

Why keratin is perfect for manufacturing adhesives

Keratin is a biodegradable and thus eco-friendly material whose structure has specific properties that make it particularly suitable for the manufacture of adhesives. Keratin’s polymer structure, i.e., its very long-chain molecules, as well as its ability to undergo cross-linking reactions predestine it for the manufacture of various adhesives. “The properties required for adhesives are to some extent already inherent in the base material and only need to be unlocked, modified and activated,” explains project manager Dr. Michael Richter.

Platform chemical and specialty adhesives

Over the past three years, Fraunhofer IGB has been working with Henkel AG & Co. KGaA on the KERAbond project: “Specialty chemicals from customized functional keratin proteins” — Kera being short for keratin, combined with the English word bond.

The partners in the project have recently developed and refined a new process. In the first stage, feathers received from the slaughterhouse are sterilized, washed and mechanically shredded. Next, an enzyme process splits the long-chain biopolymers or protein chains into short-chain polymers by means of hydrolysis.

The output product is a platform chemical that can serve as a base material for further development of specially formulated adhesives. “We use the process and the platform chemical as a “toolbox” to integrate bio-enhanced properties into the end product,” says Richter. This means parameters can be specified for the target special adhesive such as curing time, elasticity, thermal properties or strength. Also, it’s not just adhesives that are easy to manufacture but also related substances such as hardeners, coatings or primers.

In the next stage, the Fraunhofer team set about converting the feathers on a large scale. Ramping up the process fell to the Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes CBP in Leuna. The aim was to prove that the keratin-based platform chemicals can also be manufactured cost-efficiently on an industrial scale. This involved processing several kilograms of chicken feathers, with the material produced being used for promising initial material trials at Fraunhofer IGB and Henkel.

Foundations of a bioinspired economy

This bioinspired process is of particular significance for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. This is not just because it involves biodegradable raw materials or particularly efficient manufacturing methods. Biotechnology is in fact one of the main fields of research for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Richter explains the underlying concept: “We draw our inspiration from functionality or properties that already exist in nature or in natural raw materials. And we attempt to translate these properties into products through innovative manufacturing methods. This generates a bioinspired cycle for valuable raw materials.”

Fraunhofer IGB has been active in all aspects of the bioeconomy for some years and has developed exclusive expertise when it comes to keratin, for example. Which is why chemicals company Henkel approached Fraunhofer IGB for this project.

The project carries some economic weight. According to Statista, around one million tons of adhesives were manufactured in Germany alone in 2019. Total value is around 1.87 billion euros. And the scientific output is also on point: A patent application has been filed for the new process and an article published in a scientific journal. Two PhD students who have conducted extensive research on the project at Henkel and Fraunhofer are expected to complete their theses in the first quarter of 2024. This new keratin-based technology will allow a host of platform chemicals to be produced in a sustainable, bioinspired way.

The European adhesives and sealants market declined by 5 % in volume and value in 2020 due to Covid-19. However, it is forecast to grow to EUR 22.2 billion by 2026. Sustainability and circular economy objectives continue to drive demand.

The adhesives and sealants market in 2021 was very volatile, with costs and availability of logistics greatly impacting the market. The Covid-19 pandemic, the Suez Canal blockage and significant issues in raw material supply are core reasons for this situation. As a result, the European adhesives and sealants market, which was 4.7 million tonnes with a value of EUR 15.5 billion in 2020, declined by 5 % in volume and value that year. It is forecast, however, to grow to EUR 22.2 billion by 2026, predominantly as a result of a few areas that will influence it post-Covid. Namely, sustainability/circular economy objectives, such as the renewable energy sector, have steadily become one of the most important drivers of increasing adhesives and sealants demand. Assembly operations are also predicted to have the strongest A&S demand growth because of the automation/digitalisation trend in operational processes. 

FEICA, the Association of the European Adhesives and Sealants industry, launched its seventh edition of the European Adhesives and Sealants Market Report in November 2021. The market knowledge, obtained by direct interviews from the adhesives and sealants industry (formulators, raw material producers and equipment suppliers), is analysed by Smithers and published by FEICA. In September 2019, a sixth edition of the report was published, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a seventh edition that also covers its impact on the EU market, was commissioned in 2021. For the first time, FEICA offers Regional Reports, which are intended for companies that focus on regional markets only. The market size is defined for the year 2020 and a demand forecast for the period 2021-2026 is also provided.

What’s driving Adhesives and sealants demand?

In transportation, there are good adhesives and sealants demand growth prospects with increasing demand for lightweight and low-carbon-emitting vehicles. In the building/construction/civil engineering/craftsmen market segment, there is growing demand for (more) eco-responsible materials, thanks to an increasing focus in building/construction on energy efficiency, retention, and sustainable energy generation.

2020 saw a surge in e-commerce and higher demand for packaging, and in terms of paper, board and related products, issues of sustainability continue to have a major influence on adhesives and sealants  demand. Current trends concern reducing packaging waste and encouraging the reuse of packaging, as well as light weighting and recycling of packaging.

European adhesives and sealants consumer/DIY demand is forecast to grow by around 3 % in volume and value in the next five years as consumers mostly stayed home during lockdown periods. The EU Green Deal advocates the ‘Right to Repair’, which aims to improve, among other sustainability aspects, repairability of all products on the European market, and to counter premature obsolescence. These sustainability factors are prime drivers of the adhesives and sealants industry over the period 2021-2026.

The EU Green Deal

Under the EU Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a set of proposals to launch Europe on the path of transformation to a climate-neutral, fair, and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy. This will have a significant impact on the European adhesives and sealants market. The Green Deal consists of many targets and initiatives for a sustainable, low-carbon, biodiverse and circular European economy. Fossil-based raw materials will therefore continue to decrease, and there will be a continued, strong demand for safe, recyclable and sustainable A&S products, where price and quality remain key. The general trend of the industry is also expected to contribute to a more efficient production process with a lower CO2 footprint.

We asked two experts on coatings additives to share their experience. Tim-Frederic Sloot, Evonik Coating Additives, says that “additives in coatings and inks are used in low dosages but have a big impact on coating or ink properties, as well as the final coated product(s). This applies especially in the context of sustainability.” Andre van Linden, Akzo Nobel, stresses that „new additives themselves can also be sustainable. Active films for food packaging materials

A new work describes the development of chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol) active films reinforced with curcumin functionalised layered double hydroxides towards food packaging.

Biodegradable active packaging materials have drawn wide attention which can overcome the serious environmental and food safety problems caused by traditional synthetic materials. In a new study, researchers have reported developing two-component, chitosan (CS) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based films reinforced with curcumin functionalised layered double hydroxides (LDHs@CUR) via solvent casting method. The results showed that CUR was successfully loaded on the LDHs surface, and the thickness of the functional layer was 5 nm. The infrared and thermal analysis revealed that there was a strong interaction between LDHs@CUR and CS/PVA matrix, which was responsible for the enhancement of water resistance and mechanical properties.

Food packaging materials

When the amount of LDHs@CUR reached 7 wt%, UV barrier properties (at 280 nm) and antioxidant activity of LDHs@CUR/CS/PVA active films were improved by 80.6 % and 49.2 % compared with CS/PVA matrix, respectively. The tensile strength of LDHs@CUR/CS/PVA active films reached a maximum of 60.7 MPa, an increase of 43.8 % compared with CS/PVA matrix, which was attributed to the internal interface interaction and increased crystallinity. These results indicated that the benefits of incorporation for LDHs@CUR into the active CS/PVA matrix and the potential application used as active films/inner coatings to develop food packaging materials.

So far, it’s been a great experience. I’m enjoying my time there. Like I said, I just want to bring the best of me to the programming.”

Benjamin then spoke about the differences between his 18-years in WWE, and how he’s a completely different version of himself now that he is in AEW.

“Hopefully, we can do some big things while there,” he said. “Again, the feeling, surreal because not wanting to harp on my WWE experience too much, but that’s 18 years of my career, so it’s really hard not to reflect and compare the difference. It was humbling. I’m a very humble guy that way, but as far as my actual personality and my in-ring abilities, those have always been there, and it is actually refreshing to be able to show people what I really can do.”

Benjamin continued, “So far, fans seem to have taken to it. I feel like longtime fans always knew, and new fans are going like, okay, is this the same guy from WWE? Honestly, no, I’m not. I’m off the chain, unrestricted, unleashed, however you want to describe it, I’m able to work to my ability, and I feel like I’ll be able to work to my potential. I have big plans while I’m in AEW, and a world title is definitely on that agenda.”

Kevin Owens surfaced on social media to comment on his actions on Saturday night.

As noted, “The Prize Fighter” left Cody Rhodes to be taken out on a stretcher after delivering a package piledriver to “The American Nightmare” after their match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14.

Following the show, Owens took to X to set the record straight, correcting a statement released by WWE covering the story to word it in his own version.

“EXCLUSIVE: After getting screwed out of becoming the Undisputed WWE Champion by incompetent referees, Kevin Owens justifiably gets retribution on The American Person with an often imitated, never truly duplicated, PACKAGE PILEDRIVER just moments after Saturday Night’s Main Event goes off the air to send everyone home happy,” Owens wrote in the first of multiple posts.

He followed up by correcting an additional WWE on X post covering his altercation with WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

“*Upon leaving gorilla, Triple H enthusiastically thanks Kevin Owens for the house and tells him how proud he is of Kevin for doing what needed to be done and taking what he truly deserves and proceeds to invite him over to his house for Christmas dinner and to watch Saturday Night’s Main Event back on a 734 inch tv,” he wrote.

Finally, Owens shared a photo of himself posing with the Winged Eagle WWE Championship that Cody wore to the ring at the 12/14 WWE on NBC special event, along with a caption that read, “Mine.”

After Rhodes defeated Owens in the main event of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, Owens attacked his former friend and hit him with a package piledriver.

As Owens headed up the aisle with the Winged Eagle Championship, Triple H came out to confront him. This led to a shoving match between the two men.

During this week’s episode of AEW Collision, May invited Rosa to choose the time and place for the match, and Rosa selected Worlds End.
