Ruby Hughes: Echo: Songs Across the Ages

Piano pieces (Bach) and songs (Watkins, Purcell, Pritchard, Frances-Hoad, and Wallen)

Ruby Hughes, soprano; Huw Watkins, piano

I became a Ruby Hughes fan late, 13 years after she had won two prizes at the 2009 London Handel Singing Competition. Once I heard her tonal purity and simplicity, I was hooked.

Here, in a recital that includes two world premieres, Hughes and longtime collaborator Huw Watkins combine contemporary works with works from centuries past. Somber themes connect them: the transience of life. Loss. Grief.

Watkins starts the recital with an uncommonly sensitive rendition of Bach’s Sarabande from Partita No.4. This is followed by one of Bach’s Five Spiritual Songs, arranged by Benjamin Britten for voice and piano. Two other Bach keyboard works follow—the Sarabande from French Suite No.3 and the Corrente from Partita No.6—then two more songs. Also included are two songs by Purcell, “By Beauteous Softness” (arranged by Thomas Adès) and the popular “Music for a While” (arranged by Michael Tippett and Walter Bergmann). Also included are three of Britten’s arrangements of traditional songs and three songs by contemporary British women.

In between comes the recital’s raison d’être, the premiere recording of Watkins’s song cycle Echo, composed for Hughes, which the duo premiered in Carnegie Hall in 2017. Hughes’s effortless singing is deeply moving; listening with the lyrics in hand makes it more affective still.

Watkins’s five Echo songs are exceptionally beautiful. Listen to the falling cascades in his setting of Emily Dickinson’s “For Each Ecstatic Instant.” Admire how vocally responsive Hughes is in the Purcell, how fragile and precious she sounds in Errollyn Wallen’s “Peace on Earth,” and how much she can communicate with barely a whisper of sound. Marvelous.—Jason Victor Serinus

Anne-Sophie Mutter: Brahms Double Concerto & Clara Schumann Piano Trio

Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin; Pablo Ferrández, cello; Lambert Orkis, piano; Czech Philharmonic, Manfred Honeck

Mutter, Ferrández, and Honeck’s recording of the Brahms Double Concerto is more than just another alternative to the classic recordings of the work from Oistrakh, Rostropovich, and Szell; it is a classic in itself. Ferrández’s solo cello in the first movement captures to perfection all the texture and richness of tonality that his Stradivarius can offer. The veteran Mutter, 39 years after her first recording of the Brahms Double Concerto, with Meneses and von Karajan, plays her own sweet Strad with consummate confidence, as if Brahms had written this work for her. Honeck whips up a storm of passion and energy, using the resonant Rudolfinum’s Dvorák Hall in Prague to best advantage. Tempos in the first two movements are slower than in the older recording, allowing the musicians to sink deeper into the music and present Brahms in all his passion and tenderness, and his irrepressible gift for melodic variation. This is a wonderful recording that no Brahms lover will want to miss.

At the start of his career, young Brahms lived for a few months with the Schumanns and was completely taken with Clara Schumann, a gifted composer and pianist. After Robert Schumann’s death, Brahms’s relationship with Clara deepened, though apparently not beyond a close, affectionate friendship. The uncommon pairing of works by the two composers on this album seems obvious. Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor, Op.17, was completed in Dresden in 1846 (before she met Brahms), during a turbulent period marked by a miscarriage and by Robert Schumann’s deteriorating mental health. It may not be as memorable, thematically, as the Double Concerto, but I find it growing on me with each listening.—Jason Victor Serinus

Mozart: Mozart in Milan: Sacred Music around the Exsultate, jubilate

This fascinating and beautifully executed program combines Mozart’s beloved motet, Exsultate, jubilate K165, written shortly before he turned 17, with less-known music heard in Milanese churches during that period, by Germany’s Johann Christian Bach, who embraced Catholicism and studied in Milan; Giovanni Andrea Fioroni, who became maestro di cappella in Milan’s cathedral, the Duomo, in 1747; and Melchiorre Chiesa, a musician at the Teatro Regio Dula and La Scala.

Exsultate, jubilate was composed for 27-year-old castrato soprano Venanzio Rauzzini, who also performed the leading male role in Mozart’s early opera Lucio Silla. Here, it’s sung by Robin Johannsen, an American soprano whose European career has included stints with René Jacobs and the Freiburger Barockorchester as well as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. Johannsen’s technique is astounding—her high C rivals that of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Her voice is energetic, forthright, beautiful. This “historically informed” performance, with Giulio Prandi and the Coro e Orchestra Ghislieri, his award-winning ensemble, highlights instrumental lines and colors not often heard.

The real find here is male alto Carlo Vistoli, whose jaw-dropping technique is equaled by the beauty of his voice. His vehicle is the world premiere of Chiesa’s motet, Caelo tonanti. Many vocal-music lovers will want to play this recording over and over.

From J.C. Bach, we have two works: the world premiere recording of his Dixit Dominus in D (first performed in 1758) and the Magnificat in C (first performed in 1760). They, too, are delicious. Sonics, by producer/engineer Fabio Frama, are well above average.—Jason Victor Serinus

Paul Ben-Haim’s expressive chamber music had struck me as angular and fluid by turns, taking in eclectic influences. The Symphony’s violent opening gestures, however, presage a more narrowly, consistently angular score, both in its harmonies and in its melodic contours. Most of the writing is edgy and turbulent; even the Hollywood-esque climax of the first movement, in which the musical elements fight each other, is severely conflicted. The occasional lyric passages—the first movement’s second group; the cool, clear woodwinds in the Molto calmo e cantabile—are inquisitive or aspiring, recalling American postwar symphonists. Most immediately fetching, perhaps, is the closing Presto con fuoco: It opens with a fugal tarantella, whose motion continues under the woodwinds’ piquant second theme. The final chorale is, somehow, assertively meditative.

The Israel Philharmonic returns here to the recording lists. It has never been the most disciplined of orchestras, but under their current music director, Lahav Shani, they play this tricky music with alert cadence. String attacks are especially incisive in this recording. Shani’s interpretation holds each movement together well, although, when both the second and third movements die down, they briefly turn aimless and get becalmed.

A brief English horn solo suggests the player doesn’t have the highest-quality instrument; neither do the thudding timpani sound the best.

For the most part, though, the acoustic is vivid and essentially natural, allowing us to hear some incidental performance noises—clicks and burrs—along with the music. The finale’s big outburst is slightly muffled, and the full brass textures are a bit congested. The symphony, barely a half-hour, would be short measure for a hard CD.—Stephen Francis Vasta

Mieczyslaw Weinberg was a Polish/Russian composer and a contemporary of Shostakovich, whom he knew well, and whose compositional style greatly influenced his own. This influence, however, isn’t immediately obvious in the first movement of the Third Symphony, with its two pleasant, poised, but unassuming theme groups. The development, however, simulates Shostakovich’s symphonic “battle scenes”: The tumult rises to a grandiose peak before subsiding. The movement ends with eerie high strings and spectral reeds.

A perky, even charming Scherzo hints at Slavic folk influence. So does the deep, brooding Adagio, along with aspiring, contrasting episodes. The climax could be a scaled-down version of the analogous passage in Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Bracing brass call the Finale to attention, passing through a waltzy section before recycling themes from the first movement.

The delightful Flute Concerto opens with a quirky, cheerful scherzando that hints at Neoclassicism, the seemingly endless staccatos giving the flute no rest. The second movement exploits the flute’s midrange, and the finale takes in a piquant waltz and a broader string passage.

The Seventh Symphony’s long-breathed, questing string lines expand into soaring threnodies, voiced by the violins’ pure, lambent tone. The harpsichord’s presence is an enigma. It covers transitions between movements but rarely plays along with the strings. Its interjection in the finale sounds like a Baroque concerto gone wrong. It’s out of place and intrusive.

The Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is polished and powerful, and the recordings are first-class.—Stephen Francis Vasta

Tony Khan says AEW media rights are still in the “red zone” and both AEW and WBD are motivated and excited to close a deal on TV rights extension

Click:ydroxyethyl cellulose HEC

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

In today’s Q&A with media to promote AEW’s All Out PPV event this weekend, AEW’s Tony Khan said AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery share a desire to extend their TV rights deal, characterizing “excitement on both sides.” He said the new deal is still in the “red zone” (a football reference to being within a few yards of scoring) “and right there to be pushed in.”

AEW launched five years ago, and an essential part of that successful launch was a short-term TV deal with TNT to air Dynamite, giving AEW a top tier basic cable home with a history of airing pro wrestling dating back to WCW Nitro. The success of Dynamite out of the gate led to a quick extension, but the current deal expires next year. There has been talk of a new deal being imminent over the last year or so.

The cable landscape is changing, with severe drops in basic cable subscribers, especially among younger viewers. It’s one of the reasons WWE is moving Raw from basic cable to Netflix at the start of 2025, with Netflix matching the current number of homes with basic cable, but hitting different demographics, plus a massive international audience.

Dynamite viewership the last ten weeks has averaged 29 percent fewer viewers than two years ago in the same ten-week period during a time when WWE is largely holding closer to steady in similar comparisons.

Khan also said being part of the Max streaming service is part of conversations, perhaps meaning some or all PPVs would move there, similar to what WWE did with their PPVs moving to WWE Network and eventually Peacock. It could also be a mix of traditional PPVs and other live specials or even a weekly series such as Raw on Netflix.

Stay right here and keep the flow going. We think you’ll like to read this next…

“I’m actually in Orlando right now doing some rehab on my ankle,” Kingston said. “I had ankle surgery to remove a bone chip and fix some ligaments after the massive, Scottish behemoth of a man, Drew McIntyre, landed on my leg and my body went east and my leg went west and my ankle was completely sprained but they took out some bone chips and fixed the ligament and now, I’m on the mend, you know? Somewhere in between a robot and a zombie. Somewhere in between. I’m working my way back into the fold so, it’s all good, life is grand.

“I’m doing really well. I actually had this same surgery on the same ankle about six years ago to have bone chips removed so I feel like this time around, I kind of know what to expect and I’ve been kind of ahead of schedule for the most part and I’m really able to do a lot of normal people things and live normal life. WWE RAW PRIMER 2/11: Becky invited again, Rollins response to Lesnar, Balor’s IC Title prospects, Ronda vs. Ruby announced, Dana vs. Natalya?, Next up for Kurt

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW PRIMER

AIRS ON USA NETWORK, 8:00PM EST
BY FRANK PETEANI (@FrankPeteani), PWTORCH SPECIALIST

Arena, and Items Advertised by WWE

Tonight, WWE Raw emanates from the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan as we get ready for Elimination Chamber which takes place in just under a week.  The arena played host to Raw in June of last year and has hosted wrestling events as far back as 1996, including WCW Monday Nitro in the thick of the Monday Night Wars.

Here’s what is advertised by WWE.com subject to change as the day goes on:

  • Becky Lynch invited to Raw again by the McMahon Family after her controversial actions last week
  • How will Seth Rollins respond to Brock Lesnar?
  • Did Finn Balor earn his Intercontinental Championship Match?
  • Ruby Riott sets her sights on the Raw Women’s Championship
  • Will Dana Brooke go one-on-one with Natalya?
  • What’s next for Kurt Angle?
  • McMahons Invite Becky Lynch to Raw

Where do we begin with Becky Lynch after last week?

Becky was invited to Raw by Stephanie McMahon following her 2019 Royal Rumble victory and challenging of Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania.  Stephanie told Becky she needed to see a doctor and get medical clearance to be allowed to participate in the match (which is taking place in two months).  Becky refused, saying “I’m the glitch in your plan (probably assuming they want Rousey vs. Charlotte but the McMahons haven’t done anything to indicate as such), but here I am and I’m not moving for anyone.”  She then called out Stephanie for being a daddy’s girl and not having to struggle for anything.

They continued to go at it and Stephanie even asked the fans if they wanted to see Becky vs. Ronda, after which Stephanie told Becky to see the doctor due to her wrestling injured being a liability.  When Becky refused, Stephanie suspended her until she sought medical attention.  Becky attacked Stephanie, and put her in the Disarm-he but she couldn’t hold the move.  As officials were trying to maintain order, Becky went after Stephanie again but Stephanie fended Becky off with a kick.  We later learned she kicked Becky in her “bad knee.”  Here’s the WWE YouTube clip of that segment:

The next night on Smackdown, Becky invited herself to interrupt Charlotte Flair’s opening promo.  She was interrupted by Triple H.  “Trips,” as he is called occasionally, interrupted and politely asked Charlotte to leave.  He proceeded to re-emphasize that if Becky got cleared by a doctor, the suspension would go away and she would have her match with Ronda, to which Becky still refused.  He called her out for being self-destructive, going on a “suicide mission” when she invaded Raw a few months ago, and being afraid of being cleared by the doctors.  Becky treated Triple H to a slap.  Here’s the clip of that segment:

You can’t have one of my primers without “Twitter wars”:

After all of that, the McMahon family has invited Becky to Raw.  She was probably coming anyway, right?

Frank’s Analysis:  Phew!  I’m tired just composing this section.  The problem with this whole situation is that Becky doesn’t make sense.  What is her issue with the McMahons?  It’s true that the McMahon characters have been underhanded through the years, but they haven’t done anything to indicate Becky is going to get screwed out of this match.  The only thing Becky could be possibly calling on is after she earned the title match with Carmella at this past SummerSlam, Charlotte was given an opportunity to get into the match after coming off the injured list.  That never sat well with Becky.  As we recall Charlotte earned it, won the title that night, and got treated to a post-match attack by Becky which started the swell of her popularity.  If Charlotte is going to be cherry-picked into this match at WrestleMania, WWE’s best bet is to make the fans believe they management wants her in and doesn’t want Becky, but then Becky somehow gets back in late on.  The problem is, management has not indicated a desire to remove Becky.

Seth Rollins Response to Brock Lesnar

Two weeks ago we learned that 2019 Royal Rumble winner Seth Rollins will challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania.  This will be their second televised one-on-one encounter for a world championship.  They last went at it at Battleground in 2015 when Rollins was WWE World Heavyweight Championship.  That match ended when the Undertaker returned and attacked Lesnar, setting up their SummerSlam main event for that year.

That of course was then and this is now, and we have the obstacle of Seth Rollins dealing with a back injury that is not known to be serious.  He was treated to six F5s a few weeks ago and was not on Raw last week.  A video package was shown.

Tonight, Rollins addresses Lesnar as they get ready for their championship match coming up at WrestleMania.

Frank’s Analysis:  You just hope that there’s truth to the Rollins injury not being serious and can go at WrestleMania.  It would be wise not to wrestle him as much in the run-up to the show, but with low ratings and the amount of people currently on the shelf they may not have a choice.  They’ll want to get him working as soon as practical.  Given Rollins’ promo pre-Rumble, should he defeat Lesnar at WrestleMania it will be a special moment and we can expect his victory promo the night after to be just as great.  We should exercise caution given last year’s unexpected Lesnar victory over Reigns and hope that doesn’t happen here.

Finn Balor’s Intercontinental Championship Pursuit

Last week, Finn Balor was to challenge Bobby Lashley for the Intercontinental Championship.  It was not originally advertised as a championship match.

Coming off Balor coming up short against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship, Lashley made his way out to the ring with his manager Lio Rush.  He said he could beat Lesnar in his sleep, and thus Balor had no chance against him.  He told him if he can beat Lio, and entertain him enough, he would earn a championship match.  The match was on between Lio and Balor, under Lashley’s approval, but not before Lashley attacked Balor.

Balor defeated Lio with his Coup de Grace, and got out of the ring as Lashley made his way in.  Tonight, we find out if Balor has earned his Intercontinental Championship.

Frank’s Analysis:  It’s always better to build towards a championship match.  It’s preferable to have them at a PPV, but it’s understandable to have them on TV as well.  If they’re trying to build towards a title match it’s great, but Lashley having the ability to decide he doesn’t want to defend his title is downright absurd.  Where was the great McMahon regime to weigh in on this decision?  Wrestlers can just back out of matches whenever they desire?  They would have been better served to advertise Lio vs. Balor ahead of time and build up that match during the show and weave that into a future title match.  They did accomplish planting a seed for a possible Lashley vs. Lesnar match down the line, if you’re looking for the positive out of this.

Raw Women’s Championship Announced: Ronda Rousey (champion) vs. Ruby Riott

Last week, Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey defeated Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan back to back.  She defeated Morgan in under a minute, and then called out the fans for booing her and wanted somebody to “do something.”  She then took on Sarah Logan, and defeated her in about five minutes.

Ruby Riott teased entering the ring and thought better of it, leaving to go to the back with her Riott Squad girls.  They were interviewed by Dasha Fuentes in Gorilla, and Riott revealed she didn’t get in the ring because her girls need her.

On Friday, WWE announced that Riott will challenge Ronda for the Raw Women’s Championship at Elimination Chamber.  Here’s Ronda on Twitter:

Frank’s Analysis:  It’s interesting to see that the booing is getting to Ronda.  What doesn’t help is her yelling at Becky for attacking Stephanie McMahon prior to going out for the match with Morgan.  Didn’t Ronda have a mixed tag match and a feud with Stephanie upon her arrival into WWE last year?  When did things get all patched up?  It also doesn’t help that now that WWE is teasing Becky not being in the WrestleMania match, the fans could be taking it out on Ronda.  There’s also the thought that “it’s getting old” with Ronda, and fans want to see their people have success.  We’ve seen popular people like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins, and Becky Lynch get beaten down through the years in favor of whom the company wanted to push. People have enough after a while.  Look at the ratings.

As far as this match with Ruby, you can’t expect her to win the title, so it’ll be interesting to see what WWE tries to accomplish with this match.  They have worked together before on TV where Ruby had a good showing.  It wouldn’t be surprising to see the crowd favor her over Ronda.

Dana Brooke vs. Natalya?

Two weeks ago, Dana Brooke teamed with Natalya and came up short against Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan in their qualifier for the Women’s Tag Team Championship match at Elimination Chamber.

Last week, Dana attempted to apologize to Natalya, but was given the silent treatment.  She then said she would ask the McMahons for a match with her to prove she’s a better competitor.  As Dana walked out of the room, Natalya took off her AirPods and thus she likely didn’t hear Dana at all.

We’ll find out tonight if this match takes place.

Frank’s Analysis:  Teasing this as a segment indicates they may think something of Dana Brooke; however, we’ve seen them start & stop with so many people through the years (see Mojo Rawley) it’s hard to generate any enthusiasm for something like this. If she can’t cut it in the ring, then find something else for her to do.

Next for Kurt Angle

Last week, Kurt Angle came out to discuss what has been happening him recently.  To recap he lost a match decisively to Drew McIntyre just before the holidays last year, was unceremoniously eliminated from the Royal Rumble after being in for a short period of time, and lost a match to Baron Corbin in about four minutes.  He discussed living by the three “I’s” (Intensity, Integrity, and Intelligence).  Given how things have gone recently, he said he has been been plagued by the three “D’s” (Defeat, Doubt, and Depression).

He mentioned there was one opponent he couldn’t defeat and that was Father Time.  Baron Corbin interrupted followed by Drew McIntyre.  Corbin said Angle should have made this speech at the Hall of Fame two years ago and went away.  Drew said he sees fear in Angle’s eyes as opposed to the warrior he once saw.  As they approached the ring to attack Kurt, Braun Strowman’s music hit.  Strowman threw few into the ringpost while Angle threw Corbin out of the ring.  Corbin and Drew would retreat while Strowman and Angle would stand together.

In the main event (is the last segment even the main event anymore?), Strowman & Angle teamed to face Drew and Corbin.  Drew and Corbin would win via DQ when … yes this happened … Strowman, the illegal man in the ring attacked Drew after being warned by the referee.  Mind you, Drew broke up a pin attempt by Angle on Corbin, and thus Drew was illegal too.

Tonight, we begin to find out what is next for Angle.

Frank’s Analysis:  Unless they are going to enforce this rule where a team is DQ’d when the illegal man interferes, what they did last week was downright silly.

As far as Angle is concerned it’s hard to understand why they’re making his situation so depressing.  Unless they’re going to have him win some big match at an upcoming PPV and prove he’s “still got it,” doing this doesn’t make a lot of sense.  An outside-the-box thought would be to form a team with Strowman and Angle and have them win the tag titles soon or even at WrestleMania.  WWE.com has an article up showing Angle’s tag team partners through the years, which could be foreshadowing a partnership with Strowman that’s more than a “one-off.”

Other Possible Items for Tonight

  • Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins talked about losing in their first match together a few weeks ago.  Hawkins alluded to his long losing streak while Ryder discussed how they didn’t even spell his name right on TV.  Ryder said together they can stop being losers, and become winners.  Given the Revival won a fatal four-way tag match to earn another shot at champions Bobby Roode & Chad Gable, it’s hard to know where they’ll get these guys a “W.”  Could Jinder Mahal & one of the Singh Brothers be good fodder to give Ryder & Hawkins a MAJOR victory?  ;o)
  • Another Moment of Bliss segment turned into a circus act.  Alexa Bliss’s guest was EC3.  Alexa teased coming onto EC3 a little, but was interrupted by Nia Jax and Tamina.  They were then interrupted by Dean Ambrose, who alluded to Nia having a crush on him.  He then asked EC3 what happened to EC1 and 2.  After not allowing him to speak, EC3 went after Ambrose which lead to a match.  EC3 won in about three minutes with a leverage pin.  It appears Ambrose is in the “job-out” role now, so look for a rematch tonight or perhaps something at Elimination Chamber.  Ambrose was scheduled to work an inter-gender match with Nia at a house show, but it is now off.  It has been speculated, but hard to know if they’ll be doing an inter-gender match on TV/PPV in the future.  EC3 vs. Ambrose on the Elimination Chamber kickoff show, a rematch tonight, or both for that matter wouldn’t be severely unexpected.
  • Mojo Rawley was seen talking to himself in the mirror once again.  He said being a team player hasn’t helped.  We’ll see if he admits that he came in with too much “hype.”
  • Elias defeated Jeff Jarrett accompanied by the Road Dogg.  Road Dogg played his Roadie character signing “With My Baby Tonight” while also playing his DX character.  Jarrett hit Elias with a guitar after Elias won with his Drift Away.  It’s likely this nostalgia act is over, as fans were not buying.  Even my wife, who tends to be very observant, asked if anybody cares about the Jeff Jarrett act while we were watching this segment.  Look for this story to end and what’s next for Elias.
  • Bayley and Sasha Banks qualified for the Women’s Tag Team Championship Elimination Chamber match by defeating Alicia Fox & Nikki Cross.  Fox & Cross attacked Bayley & Sasha prior to the match, but it took place anyway with Bayley doing most of the work.  This is due to Sasha currently being injured; however, she is expected to compete at Elimination Chamber at the moment.  Look for something tonight involving the Raw teams that competed to be in the match.  Alicia and Nikki were none too pleased with each other after losing to Bayley and Sasha last week.

Start Time & Matches Advertised on the Arena Website

The Van Andel Arena website is advertising a start time of 7:30 p.m. local time.  They show the following matches, which clearly shows things haven’t been updated, as is the case recently with many arenas’ websites as of late:

  • Intercontinental Championship: Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins (obviously incorrect as Lashley is IC champ and Rollins is hurt).
  • Braun Strowman vs. Baron Corbin (possible)
  • Ronda Rousey vs. Nia Jax (Ronday is not a typo, that’s how they have it)
  • They also advertise Bobby Lashley appearing.

WWE SUPER SHOWDOWN PREVIEW 2/27: Fiend vs. Goldberg, Lesnar vs. Ricochet, Reigns vs. Corbin in cage, Bayley vs. Naomi, New Day vs. Miz & Morrison, Seth & Murphy vs. Street Profits, more

Click:gold buyers near me

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

WWE Super Showdown will be held in the Mohammed Abdu Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is the fifth event held in Saudi Arabia as part of multi-show deal with the Saudi government. I’m not fond of these Saudi shows as they tend to derail, detour and/or disrupt current storylines. They feel like glorified house shows at best, propaganda at worst. The only minor and debatable upside is that due to the money involved, there are matches we’d otherwise never see, but even that “benefit” is usually hampered by the lack of adequate build and other long term consequences.

1. Bayley vs. Naomi – Smackdown Women’s Championship Match

Story in a nutshell: It’s the FIRST EVER women’s championship match in Saudi Arabia. Will this be the beginning of Naomi’s third Smackdown championship run?

Since Naomi returned, she has been buzzing around Bayley with her eye on the championship. Naomi finally earned her chance when she defeated Carmella for the opportunity to face Bayley in Saudi Arabia. I’m intrigued at how this match will play out in the ring, since the women will likely have a limited set of moves they can perform as well as a limited amount of emoting.

Prediction: I think there is a chance for Naomi to win so the WWE can tout another “FIRST EVER” but I’ve got Bayley retaining.

2. Seth Rollins & Murphy vs. The Street Profits – Raw Men’s Tag Team Championship Match

Story in a nutshell: After randomly involving themselves in the Monday Night Messiah’s business, the Street Profits try to win gold for their first time in the WWE at the expense of Seth and Murphy.

I’m thinking the reason the Street Profits, Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford are got involved in this whole Messiah business (after saving Kevin Owens from a post-match attack) is because (and this is completely my guess) the Viking Raiders refused to go to Saudi Arabia. The Street Profits faced Seth and Murphy in individual matches in the lead up. If all the players are motivated, this should be the match of the night.

Prediction: This might be the belt most likely to change hands on the card. Seth doesn’t really need it and it could be hot-shotted to the Street Profits to give them something to do. I’m playing it safe and going with the champs to retain.

3. R-Truth vs. Erick Rowan vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade vs. A.J. Styles – Tuwaiq Trophy Gauntlet Match

Story in a nutshell: The Saudis REALLY like pointless trinkets, this time it’s trophy and not a cup.

It’s a gauntlet match with only two wrestlers having any issues going into it, Rey Mysterio and Andrade. Both were taken out with a hammerlock DDTs to the concrete in their pretty intense feud (and kudos for both of their miraculous recovery just in time for Super Showdown).

Prediction: With rumors of AJ Styles facing Undertaker at WrestleMania, it would make sense for AJ to win the trophy. Plus, it would go nicely with OC’s Best in the World prize. Andrade and Rey are both involved in a storyline with the rest of the Hispanic contingent, Rowan has his cage gimmick and R-Truth has his R-Truth gimmick. The only thing that gives me pause is with Lashley in limbo thanks to Rusev’s contract situation, the trophy can give him something to do. Especially if AJ Styles takes his nascent feud with Black all the way to WrestleMania instead of facing the Undertaker.

4. Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin – Steel Cage Match

Story in a nutshell: We are all trapped in Purgatory, doomed to relive all the variations of a King Corbin and Roman Reigns match.

This is what we can only hope, pray, sacrifice our loved ones to dark long-forgotten gods, will end this interminable feud. For month’s these two have gone back and forth with the source of the conflict being Corbin’s jealousy of Reign’s being more popular with the wrestlers backstage. Now, it will finally be settled in a cage match in Saudi Arabia.

Prediction: Reigns wins, but this isn’t ending. They’ll be face to face one more time inside the Elimination Chamber.

5. The New Day vs. The Miz & Morrison – Smackdown Men’s Championship Match

Story in a nutshell: Can Morrison complete his triumphant return to the WWE by winning tag team gold with his long-time friend and tag partner, Miz, or will the New Day’s power of positivity shine triumphantly?

Morrison recently returned to the WWE after years away doing nothing the WWE will recognize and picks up pretty much where he left off. He and the Miz have won an opportunity to face the Smackdown tag team champs, Kofi Kingston and Big E.

Prediction: I see New Day and Usos penciled for Wrestlemania as one of the “steal the show” matches, so while this does not preclude the New Day from dropping the belt and either them or the Usos winning it back later, the WWE has been pretty good in not passing their belts back and forth recently. So, New Day wins.

6. The Fiend vs. Goldberg

Story in a nutshell: Goldberg: “Who’s next? Fiend’s next.” Bray Wyatt: “Okay, see you in Hell!”

I am disappointed with the existence of this match. The narrative of the Fiend character is that he’s only gone after the wrestlers that have wronged Bray Wyatt in the past. Seth and Bryan were both told “he remembers” in reference to the times they got one over on the Wyatt family. When he fought the Miz it was as Bray and not the Fiend. So why would Fiend face Goldberg? It’s a big match for Saudi Arabia and they want the Fiend, that’s why. What is aggravating is this had a simple fix, instead of Goldberg appearing over satellite that first week, he could’ve been in the arena, Bray (not Fiend) could’ve accepted his challenge right there and lost the belt. Then the Fiend could’ve won it back in Saudi Arabia. The WWE, instead of maintaining a long-running narrative, went for the easy money. Disappointing.

Prediction: At some point, Goldberg will spear Fiend who will no-sell it. One or more spears later, depending on the length of the match, Goldberg will then Jackhammer Fiend and pose or lean against the ropes with the camera fixed on him. Fiend will rise behind him where Goldberg, with confused look on his face, will take the Mandible Claw.

7. Brock Lesnar vs. Ricochet

Story in a nutshell: How hard will Lesnar swat down the fly that has been annoying him for a month now? Will Ricochet put up a valiant fight before defeat, or will he go the way of former champion Kofi?

Ricochet has been a bee in Lesnar’s bonnet for a while now. On the January 20, 2020 episode of Raw, Ricochet confronted Brock who kicked Ricochet in the crotch. In the Royal Rumble Ricochet got some measure of revenge, being instrumental in helping eliminate Lesnar with a poetic shot to the dangly bits of his own. February 3, 2020 Ricochet wins a shot at the title, defeating Rollins and Lashley in a triple threat match.

Prediction: Well, it isn’t going to be any fun predicting Lesnar as the winner, so I’ll go with an under/over. 180 seconds from the moment of first offensive contact. I’m taking the under.

LATE ADDITIONS…

-The Viking Raider vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson – Kickoff Show

Story in a nutshell: The former War Machine faces the former Bullet Club in what would have been a dream match in another life.

There is not much to say here other than someone liked the indies. OC has been tied to AJ Styles and the Raiders to the Seth Rollin’s story. This would be an interesting match anywhere else in the world.

Prediction: The Viking Raiders win. Let’s move on.

-Humberto Carrillo vs. Angel Garza

Story in a nutshell: What was a feud over Latino pride that started when Andrade took out Carrillo, has now spilled out into a personal rivalry between cousins.

I’ve been a big fan of this storyline between Rey, Angel, Humberto, Andrade, and Selina Vega. Recently, Selina added Angel Garza to her charge to combat Humberto Carrillo, a move Carrillo sees as a betrayal from his cousin. The stakes have been personal indeed. Unfortunately, this seem like a “cut and paste” of this week’s Raw. Still, can be match of the night.

Prediction: Carrillo wins since Selina won’t be there to help Angel.

-Mansoor vs. Dolph Ziggler

Story in a nutshell: Mansoor needs to be spotlighted in Saudi Arabia.

I feel bad for Saudi Arabian wrestler, Mansoor. I really like the guy and think he has potential, but he has been the face (through no fault of his own) of the propaganda inherent in these Saudi Shows. With all of his successes in these shows, why isn’t he a permanent fixture on TV? At least in the microcosm of Saudi Arabia (compared to the whole world, obviously), the fans get to cheer on one of their own. And who can make you look better than Dolph Ziggler?

Prediction: Mansoor wins.
