New Judo Academy Focuses On The 'Women's Side' Of The Dojo

PALOS HILLS, IL — A new women’s judo academy is starting in Palos Hills across the street from Stagg High School and is looking for students. The Moraine Valley Judo Academy is located in the Round 4 MMA, Boxing and Fitness Gym, 8082 W. 111th St., itself in a soft opening, teaches the martial art and sport of judo from a personal trainer perspective.

While the academy is all female, the instructor is male, Francisco Soto, 50, who started the dojo (practice space) when his 19-year-old daughter told him the real reason why she didn’t join her university’s judo club.

“She said it was all guys and didn’t want to be the only girl in the space,” Soto said. “I get it. I decided then to someday create dojo for women,”

Soto, a judo sensei (teacher) with a black belt in judo and a personal trainer, created his curriculum over the summer with an eye toward fitness, community and culture in a non-competitive environment.

“I want to have a class that focuses on fitness while learning a skill,” Soto explained. “I’ve dissected movements and approached them from the perspective of a personal trainer where you’re always moving around and working up a sweat.”

He wants the women’s side of the dojo to help each other and grow together as a community.

“If we’re talking about people who are older or trying to get into shape and using seldom used muscles, it can be dangerous,” Soto said. “As a personal trainer, we have the knowledge to build up fitness and strength. Judo is what you make of it and safety is one of my highest priorities.”

Classes are from noon to 1 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at Round 4, and costs $79 per month, which gives members access to Round 4’s kickboxing, boxing, group fitness and strength training in addition to the women-only judo academy. To participate in the women-only judo classes, register in person at Round 4, 8082 W. 111th St.

Soto hopes to take the Moraine Valley Judo Academy concept to other local venues and park districts.

“My goal is to teach 20 or 30 women enough to earn a black belt and start their own club,” Soto said.

Cody Rhodes Disagrees With CM Punk’s Assessment Of AEW, Says He Is Very Proud Of Creating AEW

Cody Rhodes addresses comments made by CM Punk.

Punk made headlines for his recent interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, where he was asked about his run in AEW and the multiple incidents that he was involved in, including Brawl In and Brawl Out. The most newsworthy comment from Punk was when he said that Tony Khan was not a “real boss” but a “nice guy,” and that AEW is not a “real business.”

Today, Rhodes appeared on Helwani’s show and gave his thoughts on what Punk said.

That’s his assessment. It’s not my assessment. It’s important for me to remind people that I am so proud of what me, Matt, Nick, Kenny, Tony, Bernie, Brandi, Dana, and Chris. I name all these people because I was in those meetings. As much as the internet will try to spin a narrative one way. If one of those people had not been at that start-up level, the company would not have happened. I am so proud of what was created. I am so insanely proud of what it does for the industry overall, for wrestlers and their well-being, and their ability to feed their families. I have an unbelievable love for so many people in that locker room, including the Bucks and Kenny. We’re bonded forever over this thing that we did. It’s not my assessment. In my time there, the infrastructure was just being built up. We were trying new things and doing new things. It was a start-up company. A big-time start-up company, but a start-up company. I wish them nothing but the best.

Regarding the disagreements that Punk had with The Elite, Rhodes says that he never foresaw anything like that happening, but says he has an admiration for all involved.

I don’t think I foresaw any of those issues. I did kind of predict, it was unrelated to those guys, but I do remember predicting that there were going to be certain guys who had been there, who wanted to wave the banner, ‘Hey, you’ve not been here,’ and then brand new guys, you always need fresh blood, like Punk coming back to WWE is a great call. I think those always would mesh. I just think what happened there is a ton of misunderstanding, a ton of miscommunication. You will see on indies and wrestlers that aren’t properly trained. I’m not talking about bullying etiquette, but you do need to have a little old school in you to know the collaborativeness of what this is. I think they were ships in the night. I love Matt, Nick, and Kenny, and I love CM Punk. I don’t know how, but I do. I’m happy for everyone involved. I think it was a ships in the night thing. I wasn’t there though.

Crowley Not Seeking Re-Election To Point Pleasant Beach Council

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — When the Point Pleasant Beach Borough Council holds its reorganization meeting in January 2025, the council will have at least two new council members.

Candidate petitions filed to seek election in November to the two, three-year terms and a one-year unexpired term show two current members — Council President Rosa Crowley and Councilman Jack Pasola — are not seeking re-election.

According to the Ocean County Clerk’s Office, Councilman Michael Ramos, whose three-year term expires Dec. 31, is seeking re-election. He is joined on the Republican ticket by Andy Cortes in seeking the two full terms.

Find out what's happening in Point Pleasantwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Ramos and Cortes are being challenged by Democrats Ernest “EJ” Geiger and Margaret “Maggie” Doucette for the full terms.

Vying for the one-year unexpired term are Republican David Betten and Democrat Catherine “Cathy” Sogorka. The seat had been held by Douglas Vitale before he ran for mayor in 2023.

Crowley, who is finishing her first term on the council, has clashed repeatedly with Vitale from the start of 2024. She has been aligned with Councilwoman Arlene Testa, who had sought to replace former mayor Paul Kanitra. Vitale defeated Testa in the Republican primary in June 2023. Also aligned with Crowley and Testa on the council are Caryn Byrnes and Arthur Gant Jr., who were elected to their first terms in November.

Crowley has been at the center of controversy, with multiple calls from Vitale and from residents for her to resign in the wake of an argument in late February with one of her neighbors where she is accused of antisemitic language. Crowley has refused to resign. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office deemed it a bias incident. Read more: Councilwoman Rejects Resignation Calls In Point Pleasant Beach

Crowley also has been accused of conflicts of interest over her position on the council’s Inspections, Licenses & Building Codes committee, because she has matters pending before the borough’s Board of Adjustment.

Pasola was appointed in January to Vitale’s council seat. He has repeatedly called for the council members and Vitale to stop arguing in public, saying it is embarrassing and drawing negative attention to Point Pleasant Beach.

Unlike the 2023 campaign, which featured a bitter Republican primary for mayor, the 2024 primaries will be uncontested.

Ramos, who is aligned with Vitale, is seeking his second full term. Cortes is seeking his third term; he served on the council as a Republican from 2013-2018 and lost a bid to return to the council as an independent in 2021. Betten has not served on the governing body.

None of the Democrats have served on the governing body. Geiger has run previously, as has Sogorka. Doucette is a newcomer.

“We are closing the punch-list items out soon at the Community Center and look forward to reopening the building for our beloved community to once again enjoy events such as bingo, dances, and rentals,” Council President Christy Bobo told Patch. “We’re very thankful for the support from the community members who have assisted.”

She went on to thank Nini Jobson and Chuck Gerdau for helping the city’s public works team with ideas for grounds improvements and preservation of the historical character.

“We have spoken with multiple members of District 1 regarding future potential programming such as movie nights and gatherings,” Bobo said. “We’re looking forward to seeing the center used in an increased capacity for senior meals to be distributed one day soon.”

As Patch previously reported, the Northport City Council originally considered selling the property to a developer for it to become a mixed-use development. However, city leaders were met with substantial public backlash and Mayor John Hinton said he would veto the sale if it ever got to the point.

Instead, the Council opted to invest in much-needed improvements for the Community Center to allow for its continued use.

RECTIFICATIF.
