STORRS, CT — A group of University of Connecticut engineers and materials science students has created “the world’s smallest basketball,” just in time for the NCAA Tournament.

Researchers from the materials science and engineering department, housed in the new Science 1 building, have used “the best-depth-resolution nanolithography in the world,” to do so.

Department head Bryan Huey said that, after the group determined a new technique worked, we members wanted to do “an eye-catching school spirit-related project,” to celebrate both basketball teams’ participation.

The pictures, he said, were “”carved” into a crystalline substrate. Laterally, the patterns are about 4-5 um, considerably smaller than a human hair, which is roughly 50 um, he said. Micrometers (represented as µm) represent a length of measurement equal to one millionth of a meter.

And the depth of the engraving is only 5 nm, which is another 1000 times smaller than the width.

“Hence, the world’s smallest basketball was chiseled here in Storrs,” he said.

The materials science and engineering faculty and students developed the technique over the last few years exclusively at UConn. It is a substantial improvement over existing AFM-based nanomachining that does not incorporate the extra iterative feedback, Huey said.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — For the second time, Republicans on the South Windsor Town Council did not seat an endorsed candidate for a Democratic vacancy at Monday’s meeting, an action the interim Democratic town chair called “reckless” during a difficult budget cycle.

Michael Paré, who served on the Board of Education for six years, was nominated by the Democratic Town Committee to fill the seat vacated in February by the resignation of Erica Evans. A resolution approving his addition to the council was on the March 4 meeting agenda, but failed to garner enough support with three votes in favor, two opposed and two abstentions.

During Monday’s meeting, interim Democratic town chair Linda Jeski presented the council hundreds of letters from residents supporting Paré’s appointment to the seat; however, a resolution again failed to pass, with voting resulting in a 4-4 deadlock.

Republican Town Committee chairman Miguel Proano told Patch several GOP council members reiterated previous concerns about Paré’s opinions expressed on Facebook about some national issues, including a call for “a permanent cease-fire” in Gaza. Councilor Richard Balboni had previously stated he feared the council would shift its focus away from local issues if Paré was appointed.

In a written statement, the Democratic Town Committee declared, “Despite the duty to fill vacancies outlined in our town charter, the Republican-majority council has once again denied the highly respected, well-qualified Democratic nominee the opportunity to serve our town.”

Jeski said, “Leaving our community upside down during budget season is a manufactured and unnecessary crisis brought on by our colleagues across the aisle. It’s reckless and stands in the way of the people of our community who expect us to work together on their behalf.”.

Paré said, “I am disappointed but not surprised that the majority has chosen to leave this important council seat vacant, silencing the votes of thousands of South Windsor residents during an extremely challenging budget cycle. Since the last vote, I have personally contacted all town council members to address their questions and concerns, something that, to my knowledge, no other nominee has had to do. I welcome continued conversations with those still concerned.”.

“We have serious challenges in our community that require serious people to solve those challenges,” former mayor Andrew Paterna said. “It appears the Republican majority on the town council are not up to the task even to do the easy things like seating Mike Paré. I shudder to think what will happen with more difficult choices, like our municipal budget.”

Proano said the Democrats have “valid frustrations,” and are currently in the same position Republicans were in last year when they were in the minority.

“Our nominees were repeatedly denied, and because of that precedence, [the Democrats] set a standard to scrutinize candidates a lot more closely,” he told Patch.

ELMHURST, IL – Years ago, Elmhurst decided against allowing video gambling, but that does not apply to fraternal organizations.

Under Illinois law, fraternal groups can offer video gambling throughout the state.

In Elmhurst, two fraternal organizations – American Legion THB Post 187 and Elks Lodge 1531 – offer the activity.

According to Illinois Gaming Board reports, the Elks installed five machines in December 2022, while the American Legion followed suit in October with six.

In towns that allow video gambling, 29 percent of the money goes to state taxes and 5 percent to the town.

But in localities with bans, the state gets the entire 34 percent.

In the last quarter of 2023, the American Legion and Elks netted $39,633 and $4,653, respectively, in pre-tax income from the machines, for a total of $44,286. Of that, $15,057 went to the state.

With the ban, Elmhurst relinquished $2,214 in income during the last quarter. At that rate, the city is on track to lose out on $8,850 a year.

Elmhurst is among the wealthier towns that prohibit video gambling. The others include Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge, La Grange and Western Springs.

Discussions of video gambling can turn heated, with backers and foes holding strong views.

Last year, Downers Grove officials considered lifting the village’s ban.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Konstantin Koltsov, who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 2000s, has died at 42.

Russian club Salavat Yulaev confirmed his death Tuesday in a social media statement.

Koltsov, a forward, played for the Belarus national team in the 2002 and 2010 Olympics and spent parts of three seasons with the Penguins in the early 2000s.

“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that the coach of Salavat Yulaev, Konstantin Koltsov, has passed away,” Salavat Yulaev, which is based in the Russian city of Ufa, said in the statement.

According to Belarusian media outlet Telegraf, Kolstov died of a detached blood clot.

KEANSBURG, NJ — A Keansburg man was sentenced Friday to more than a decade in prison after police found heroin and cocaine in a storage locker he kept in Tinton Falls, said Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago.

Davidson Jules, 42, of Keansburg, pleaded guilty in January.

He was arrested after a joint investigation done in the spring of 2023 by Keansburg Police detectives and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Bayshore Task Force:

Police executed search warrants on Jules’ home in Keansburg, as well as his storage unit in Tinton Falls last May. There, they found the more than five ounces of cocaine, more than half an ounce of heroin, methamphetamine, plus a gun.

Jules was sentenced to 12 years in prison on a charge of first-degree cocaine possession with intent to distribute (more than five ounces) of CDS, plus an additional five years for illegally having a gun. Those two sentences will run concurrently.
