L’armée pakistanaise renforce sa présence à Quetta, capitale de la province du Baloutchistan, dont sont originaires les séparatistes visés par les tirs en territoire iranien. “Si le Pakistan continue à fermer les yeux sur sa propre politique de sécurité, il est possible qu’un pays de l’Ouest ou de l’Est décide de nous attaquer et nous n’y serions pas préparés”, juge Muhammad Younas Baloch, homme politique local.

Un conflit de plusieurs décennies autour de la frontière

L’Iran et le Pakistan sont confrontés depuis des décennies à des tensions à leur frontière commune, qui s’étend sur 1 000 km. Mais c’est la première fois que les deux voisins entrent en conflit ouvert. L’Union européenne espère encore éteindre l’incendie. La Chine, qui entretient des liens privilégiés avec les deux belligérants, s’est dite prête à jouer un rôle pour apaiser le conflit.

Nigeria’s police force said it was beefing up security as the United States ordered diplomats’ families to leave the capital, Abuja, due to what the U.S. called a “heightened risk of terrorist attacks.”

The details of any threat were unknown but residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been on high alert since Sunday after several Western embassies changed their travel advisories citing an elevated risk, particularly in Abuja.

Nigerian security forces are battling jihadist fighters, mostly in the northeast of the country, but ISIS-allied militants have claimed several recent attacks near the capital.

In a statement late Thursday, Nigerian police instructed “all strategic police managers in charge of commands and tactical formations within the country to beef up security in their respective jurisdictions, especially in the FCT.”

The Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba said “all emergency numbers” should be activated to help insure “a 24/7 prompt response with combatant officers and men on standby.”

He urged residents of the city of about six million “to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or abnormal occurrence and persons to the police.”

The statement came as the U.S. State Department on Thursday ordered the departure of diplomats’ families and also authorized the departure of non-emergency government employees from Abuja.

“Terrorists may attack with little or no warning,” targeting malls, markets, hotels, places of worship, restaurants, bars or schools, the State Department said in its country summary for Nigeria, without giving further details.

The advisory also urged all Americans to reconsider traveling to any part of the Nigeria and not to visit the capital at all, according to The Associated Press.  

The U.S., Britain, Australia and Canada had issued warnings last weekend, although the latter three hadn’t ordered any evacuation of staff or their families as of Friday morning.

Separately, the US warned this week of a possible “terrorist” attack in South Africa’s largest city Johannesburg.

On Thursday, Jabi Lake Mall, a major shopping center in Abuja, was temporarily shut down for unspecified security reasons.

The government said Nigerians and foreigners in the country “should continue to be alert but must not panic.”

“I can assure all that our military and other security agencies have continued to do everything possible to secure and protect Nigerians and foreigners living in Nigeria,” said the Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

“Terrorists have been hard hit and put on the run,” he said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Some European embassies and international organizations in Abuja haven’t updated their risk assessments or travel advisories.

“We have no crisis to manage, we are managing the panic,” a senior security manager with an international organization based in the capital told Agence France-Presse, asking to remain anonymous.

“We don’t know what the motive is (behind the U.S. evacuation). We are taking some precautionary measures and actions, but activities are normal,” he added.

Nigerian troops are deployed throughout the West African nation of some 200 million people, fighting against Islamist insurgents and heavily armed criminals.

Jihadists generally operate in the northeast of the country, far away from the capital, though they have small cells in other parts of the country.

The last time one of the groups — Boko Haram — attacked the city center was in 2014.

But the the Islamic State West Africa Province, linked to ISIS, has claimed several attacks around the FCT in the past six months, including a mass jailbreak in July.

The incident in Kuje, in which more than 400 inmates including dozens of suspected jihadists escaped, prompted President Muhammadu Buhari to say he was “disappointed” with his intelligence services.

In addition to the terrorism threat, the capital is surrounded by states with high levels of banditry — gangs of gunmen who kidnap and kill with no ideological motivation.

Analysts have warned that insecurity could worsen with the start of political campaigning for the general election to replace Buhari next year.

BERKELEY, NJ — February will mark one year since 14-year-old Adriana Kuch took her own life after being bullied at school. The video of her attack was filmed and spread via social media. And after a year of making changes within the district, including new rules and a new superintendent, the Central Regional School District has announced it will be filing a lawsuit against some of the biggest social media platforms.

“The lawsuit does not seek an end to the social media platforms, but rather seeks to change how these companies operate, and hopefully compel them to take responsibility and make changes,” Board President Susan Cowdrick read from a prepared statement at the latest Board of Education meeting.

Specific companies named are TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. These apps harmfully target young people in the interest of increased profits, Cowdrick said.

Somalia’s president says at least 100 people were killed in Saturday’s two car bombings at a busy junction in the capital and the toll could rise in the country’s deadliest attack since a truck bombing at the same spot five years ago killed more than 500.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, at the site of the explosions in Mogadishu, told journalists that nearly 300 other people were wounded. “We ask our international partners and Muslims around the world to send their medical doctors here since we can’t send all the victims outside the country for treatment,” he said.

The al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab extremist group, which often targets the capital and controls large parts of the country, claimed responsibility, saying it targeted the education ministry. It claimed the ministry was an “enemy base” that receives support from non-Muslim countries and “is committed to removing Somali children from the Islamic faith.”

Al-Shabab usually doesn’t make claims of responsibility when large numbers of civilians are killed, as in the 2017 blast, but it has been angered by a high-profile new offensive by the government that also aims to shut down its financial network. The group said it is committed to fighting until the country is ruled by Islamic law, and it asked civilians to stay away from government areas.

Somalia’s president, elected this year, said the country remained at war with al-Shabab “and we are winning.”

The attack in Mogadishu occurred on a day when the president, prime minister and other senior officials were meeting to discuss expanded efforts to combat violent extremism and especially al-Shabab. The extremists, who seek an Islamic state, have responded to the offensive by killing prominent clan leaders in an apparent effort to dissuade grassroots support.

The attack has overwhelmed first responders in Somalia, which has one of the world’s weakest health systems after decades of conflict. At hospitals and elsewhere, frantic relatives peeked under plastic sheeting and into body bags, looking for loved ones.

Halima Duwane was searching for her uncle, Abdullahi Jama. “We don’t know whether he is dead or alive but the last time we communicated he was around here,” she said, crying.

Witnesses to the attack were stunned. “I couldn’t count the bodies on the ground due to the (number of) fatalities,” witness Abdirazak Hassan said. He said the first blast hit the perimeter wall of the education ministry, where street vendors and money changers were located.

An Associated Press journalist at the scene said the second blast occurred in front of a busy restaurant during lunchtime. The blasts demolished tuk-tuks and other vehicles in an area of many restaurants and hotels.

The Somali Journalists Syndicate, citing colleagues and police, said one journalist was killed and two others wounded by the second blast while rushing to the scene of the first. The Aamin ambulance service said the second blast destroyed one of its responding vehicles.

It was not immediately clear how vehicles loaded with explosives again made it to the high-profile location in Mogadishu, a city thick with checkpoints and constantly on alert for attacks.

The United States has described al-Shabab as one of al Qaeda’s deadliest organizations and targeted it with scores of airstrikes in recent years. 

A U.S. troop presence of under 500 troops has been in place in Somalia since May, when President Biden approved the Pentagon’s request to bring troops back to the war-torn country, reversing a decision by former President Donald Trump in January 2021 to withdraw the larger contingent of 750 that had been there. After taking office, Trump at first expanded airstrikes in the region, but in December 2020, he ordered a drawdown of troops.

Ce n’était pas terrible d’envisager de faire les deux à la fois pour des histoires d’emplois du temps mais aussi par respect pour les téléspectateurs et les auditeurs. Donc France 2 m’a demandé de choisir. Les nuits blanches ont commencé. Ça a été terrible”, avait-elle indiqué sur le plateau de Touche pas à mon poste.
