Kids Who Scream On Planes; What To Do, What Not To Do [Flightmares]

ACROSS AMERICA — Empathy for parents flying with disruptive young children only goes so far, some readers told us for Flightmares, Patch’s exclusive reader-sourced feature on flight etiquette.

Our question dealt with children who throw shrieking tantrums, not crying babies who have no way other than crying to express themselves. It’s become a polarizing topic, according to comments on viral videos that show misbehaving children.

One in March shows a man and his daughter who were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight after the kid threw a tantrum during boarding. Another showed a shrieking toddler climbing on seats and running through the aisle on an eight-hour Lufthansa flight from Germany to New Jersey.

Find out what's happening in Across Americawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

In Europe, Coredon Airlines will have a dedicated child-free zone on its Amsterdam and Curaçao route, starting Nov. 3. A survey of 1,000 U.S. adults last year showed some widespread support for adult-only, child-free flights. And many are willing to pay a premium or the privilege.

But how do you handle it now? The answer is simple for a Milford (Connecticut) Patch reader. Nothing.

Find out what's happening in Across Americawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

“Feel empathy for the parents” of very young children, and especially those with babies, the reader said, adding, “I feel bad for the babies because their ears hurt and they don’t know why.”

An Across America Patch reader said that “unruly, obnoxious adults are the source of every terrible flight I’ve ever had.”

As for parents whose children don’t sit still quietly, “have some empathy and leave them alone,” the reader said.

Other Patch readers said it’s OK to ask parents to parent.

“I’m inclined to politely tell the parents that I’d appreciate some consideration and respect from their child,” said a Dunedin (Florida) Patch reader

“Speak kindly to the parents,” the person said. “If it persists, I get up and tell the flight attendant. If it still isn’t handled, I go to giving a bad review online.”

On a flight from California to North Carolina, “the flight attendant did nothing to the parents of the 5ish-year-old that was screaming at the top of his lungs and running up and down the aisle for a full 15 minutes, and then off and on during the five-hour flight,” the reader said. “Absolutely unacceptable.”

The reader left a review and pledged never to fly that airline again.

A Huntington (New York) Patch said flight attendants should be trained to handle the situation. “If you have something positive, help out,” the reader said, “but be very careful.”

‘Start Shrieking Back’

“Jump out of the plane?” one Patch reader cracked.

The reader didn’t describe the exact situation that provoked the exaggerated response, but said, “It was horrible.”

What’s more, the reader said, “if I pulled that when I was that age, I got a well-deserved whooping.”

Control what you can, and prepare for what you can’t, other readers said.

“Ask if they have disposable earplugs,” a Chicago Patch reader said. “Then, before you fly again, lay in a supply.”

“I plug my ears with earplugs I always carry with me,” another reader. “I have sensitive ears and have difficulty with many noises.

“I don’t fly as often as I used to, but a crying baby has been on a flight with me,” the reader continued. “It makes for an annoying time, but it seems the baby usually quits crying in a reasonable amount of time.”

A couple of readers send non-verbal signals, including an Across America Patch reader who said, “My stink eye is withering” and claimed to have “had to use all my powers to find my zen.”

“I turn up my headphones and glare at the kids,” said a California Patch reader who describes flights with shrieking children as “awful.”

“Start shrieking back whenever they do it?” said an Attleboro (Massachusetts) Patch reader who was probably joking.

CM Punk expected to wrestle on premiere episode of AEW Collision

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

CM Punk is expected to wrestle a major match on the premiere episode of AEW Collision.

Fightful is reporting that Collision will begin in mid-June and that Punk will be a part of the show in an active way. The report indicates that the company has proposed Chris Jericho to Punk as an opponent for the show, but that Punk has suggested another opponent. The name of that potential opponent is unknown at this time.

AEW Collision will reportedly be officially announced next week at the Warner Brothers Discovery upfronts in New York City at Madison Square Garden theatre. Punk’s return to AEW has been tied to this premiere for weeks. The show reportedly will air live on Saturday nights in primetime.

Punk has been off of AEW television since the All Out PPV last September. Punk tore his tricep during the main event of that show and also went on a post-event tirade, which led to a backstage brawl with The Elite. Punk is a former AEW World Champion, but was stripped of the championship after All Out because of his role in the fight.

All These Sheriff's Dogs Want For Christmas Is To Catch The Bad Guys

BRANDON, FL — While dogs throughout Hillsborough County dream of treats and toys beneath the Christmas tree, the members of the Hillsborough County K-9 Unit slumber with visions of catching bad guys in their heads.

Tracking and catching criminals is something these four-legged law enforcement officers routinely do every week.

Nevertheless, although they’re highly trained working dogs, these furry crime fighters wouldn’t mind finding treats and toys beneath the Christmas tree like their non-working counterparts.

Find out what's happening in Brandonwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The Hillsborough sheriff’s K-9 unit is made up of 24 German shepherds, Belgian Malinois, German shepherd/Belgian Malinois mixes, bloodhounds and German shorthaired pointers. Each dog has a specialty, such as bomb or narcotics detection or fugitive apprehension.

All the dogs complete 480 hours of training with their handlers to be certified as a law enforcement canine. Once certified, each canine is given its own sheriff’s office personal identification number and badge. They begin working at the age of 1 to 3 years old and retire at the age of 9 or 10, spending their leisure years at the homes of their handlers.

Among the latest additions to the sheriff’s K-9 unit are two German shorthaired pointers appropriately named Watson and Holmes who were recruited to bolster safety and sniff out drugs and other contraband at the county jails on Orient and Falkenburg roads.

“Through technology, canines and training, no one is taking more steps to prevent the spread of contraband than the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office,” said Chronister when he introduced the dogs who began their duties Sept. 4. “These K-9 partners are an invaluable asset to our efforts in preventing the introduction of drugs and contraband into the jails, thereby enhancing overall security and order.”

After completing 200 hours of training, Holmes and Watson, both 1 1/2 years old, conduct routine visitor checks, inspect incoming packages and perform pod searches.

“We hope these K-9s serve as a deterrent to inmates and visitors who might otherwise attempt to introduce drugs into the jail,” said Chronister. “The presence of these new team members will allow us to reduce violence, disputes and health hazards among inmates.”

Saving their barks and bites for the bad guys after receiving commands from their handlers, the sheriff’s K-9s often serve as ambassadors for the sheriff’s office, permitting children to pet them when they’re not on duty.

“The dogs are a treasured part of the sheriff’s office and any law enforcement agency,” said the sheriff. “To that end, state law helps protect law enforcement canines by making it a felony to injure or kill a police dog.”

Residents are always welcome to drop off gifts or make donations to purchase protective gear, such as bullet-proof vests, for the dogs or their retired cohorts at any sheriff’s office.

In addition to Watson and Holmes, members of the K-9 unit include Koa, Daffy, Champ, Morrell, Smoke, Drago, Toby, Wrigley, Specter, Echo, Calypso, Butch, Millie, Chance, Gus, Kurfew, Finn, Tonto, Major, Mary Lou, Roy, Mick, not to mention, Mason.

Mason is the sheriff’s office’s first station dog and the sixth K-9 to be adopted through the K-9s for Warriors station program, which relocates trained service dogs to police and sheriff’s stations to help first responders “decompress” after a challenging call.

Before retiring and becoming a station dog, Mason was trained to be a service dog for a military veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder and can recognize anxiety and stress in people.

“At times tensions run high, but Mason’s friendship will help keep spirits up and remind us that no one walks alone,” said Chronister.

Gerhard Krinner, glaciologue
