Logan Paul wins United States title at WWE Crown Jewel

Click:gate valve manufacture

For the first time in his professional wrestling career, Logan Paul is a champion.

Paul captured his first WWE gold at Saturday's Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia. Paul defeated Rey Mysterio to win the United States Championship. The finish of the match was Paul pinning Mysterio after using brass knuckles to deliver a knockout punch.

This is two straight matches where Paul has used brass knuckles to win. He also defeated Ricochet at SummerSlam after hitting a brass knux shot.

A member of Paul's entourage gave him the brass knuckles to use during Saturday's match. The knux fell to the floor the first time Paul tried to use them. Santos Escobar stopped the member of Paul's entourage from picking them back up, but Escobar left the knux on the apron as he chased the entourage member away. Paul picked up the knux and used them as Mysterio was going for a springboard move after hitting a 619.

Paul made his WWE in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38 in April 2022. Mysterio was also involved in that match. Paul teamed with The Miz to defeat Rey & Dominik Mysterio.

Paul vs. Mysterio was made for Crown Jewel after Paul called out Mysterio last month. Paul issued the callout following his boxing victory over Dillon Danis.

WWE considering a big change to how WWE television is presented, details on the variations that WWE is asking fans for feedback on

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

WWE is surveying fans regarding a consideration to add inset “picture in picture” images of images of fans watching WWE TV at home. One option is four fans on the left side of the screen with a wrestling match taking place in the background. There’s another with inset images of 16 fans surrounding the perimeter of the screen with a match in the middle.

The survey also asks whether fans would like to watch fans on screen react visually, or also hear their reactions, and whether they’d be on screen infrequently or frequently or always.

The survey also asks whether viewers would like to see regular fans, celebrities, wrestlers, WWE legends, or other famous athletes watching and reacting.

This is similar to what the NWA launched with their “NWA Circle Squared” series a few weeks ago.

(Keller’s Analysis: I like this idea. Even better, which would be less intrusive, would be putting the images of the fans not on the screen directly, but on the video towers that surround the ringside area now in the background. The noise from the fans could still be piped in, but the match would remain the primary focus and, as usual, fans would be in the background animating the backdrop. WWE could include 50 or more fans on the video towers around ringside reacting. It’s smart for WWE to consider technology options to liven up the empty-venue setting for matches.)

WWE cuts four more wrestlers from NXT including independent standout Purrazzo, update on new non-wrestling cuts made from NXT (w/Radican’s Analysis)

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

WWE cut four more wrestlers today after making twenty cuts yesterday. NXT wrestler M.J. Jenkins announced on her Twitter page that she was released. NXT talents Deonna Purrazzo and Aleksandar Jaksic also announced that they had been released from WWE. NXT’s Dan Matha has also been released by WWE as confirmed by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer.

Josiah Williams, who was a digital talent at the WWE Performance Center, has also been released. He tweeted that he was now open for bookings. Multiple sources tell PWTorch that Ace Steel, who worked as a coach at the WWE Performance Center, has been released as well.

Radican’s Analysis: I was surprised things didn’t work out for Purrazzo in WWE. She seemed like a sure-fire bet to be a star there the way she rose through the indie ranks and looked to have major league potential. Josiah Williams is a talented rapper and voice actor. It’s a shame to see him released from the company, as he has so much talent and and could have contributed to the company in so many ways. I have heard it’s possible more WWE releases are coming, but I haven’t heard of anymore cuts as of this writing.

RECOMMENDED: WWE cuts 28 personnel from the roster (UPDATED): Including Rusev, Gallows & Anderson, Kurt Angle, Zack Ryder, many producers, more

Live Long In Gotham: NYC Sets Life Expectancy Goal Of 83 By 2030

NEW YORK CITY — Life in New York City should — and could — be longer, officials said.

Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday unveiled HealthyNYC, a wide-ranging campaign to increase the city’s life expectancy to 83 years by 2030.

“New Yorkers deserve to live healthier and longer lives — not just surviving, but thriving,” he said.

Find out what's happening in New York Citywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The campaign seeks to reverse a downward trend in New Yorkers’ average lifespans amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The average life expectancy in the city stood at just shy of 83 years in 2019, before dropping to 78 in 2020, data shows.

Life expectancy has barely improved since then, and not just because of COVID, said city health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan.

Health worsened across the board for New Yorkers in recent years, and unevenly across neighborhoods and demographic groups, he said.

“Today, we are making a choice to be the healthiest big city in America,” he said. “This is a campaign to take back the years stolen by COVID and all of the worsening crises like heart disease and diabetes, suicides and overdoses.”

The campaign sets the following goals by 2030:

To do so, city officials plan to, according to the mayor’s office:

COOLING: Progress’s finances raise many questions as they ask for support during coronavirus live events pause

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

It would be fair to say that the novel coronavirus has been a… erm… novel challenge for pro wrestling promotions to navigate, whether they be corporate or independent. That’s no less true for a promotion that awkwardly straddles that divide, with Progress having cancelled all their shows up until October, including an American tour and what promised to be their biggest ever Super Strong Style 16 weekender.

Even though fans were still chasing them for refunds from WrestleMania weekend (a delay apparently caused by their American partners), Progress used the cancellation announcements to encourage fans to donate so that the promotion could “keep the lights on” and help the pro wrestlers who were missing out on paydays do the same.

This was in addition to having launched a Twitch channel that is airing archival and partner content with the explicit purpose of supporting the salaries of Progress’s staff members that would otherwise be redundant without shows to support. This, despite the fact that their VOD service and merchandise e-shop have continued to trade during the pandemic.

But as has been shown so many times during this pandemic, just because people and companies can ask or access help, doesn’t mean they should. And when you look at Progress’s finances, they are far from being the scrappy underdog they claim to be.

Billed under their shoot name, JJG Partners, Progress’s 2018/’19 accounts, which have finally been published on the British Government’s registry for corporate information, show that the promotion paid a dividend of £273,000 to the (then) three owners: Jon Briley, Glen Joseph, and Jim Smallman. This was a significant increase of the dividend paid in the financial 2017/’18, which was “only” £155,000.

For those unfamiliar with corporate nomenclature, a dividend is the share of the profit that is paid out in cash to the owners. That means over the past two years owners have paid themselves over £400,000, not including any salary they received for their staff roles in the promotion, nor their jobs with NXT UK.

But there’s more on Companies House than just the 2019 accounts. We finally have confirmation about the terms of Jim Smallman’s exit from the company. He did indeed cease to be a director at the end of July 2019 and was bought out of his shares.

Based on documentation showing that Smallman was paid £80,000 for his shares, we can calculate that the owners value the company at slightly more than £355,000. Interestingly, the purchase was done in a way where the shares were bought by the company itself, in theory allowing for them to be resold at a later date. This despite Smallman’s replacement in creative and as emcee, Matt Richards, having said that he was not receiving an equity stake.

Obviously one does not begrudge anyone making a living, but this does raise several questions. One has to wonder how Progress has made so much money, and whether their relationship WWE is behind the significant increase.

Several years ago I was told that Progress had received as much as £50,000 for their rights library, but there are rumors that the current relationship is much more lucrative. When it comes to the current circumstances, one has to wonder whether paying out such aggressive dividends left the company under capitalized.

Likewise if the owners have had such profitable years recently, wouldn’t it be reasonable to expect them to support workers during the current crisis rather than organizing fundraising drives? After all, in 2016/’17 they loaned the company £40,000, so it’s not like they have to make it a gift.

From its name, to its claim to be Punk Rock Pro Wrestling, Progress has long claimed to embody certain values. But what is progressive about not fairly sharing the fruits of their labors with the workers? It surely cannot be right that such a successful company is still paying performers as little as £50 per show, or paying artists as little as £25 for merchandise designs. Let alone pleading poverty, to encourage fans to make donations in the middle of a pandemic. It’s time for Progress to realize that they’re no longer a passion project deserving of charity, but a lucrative company that through its own efforts could actually help put more food on people’s tables.

5/27 NXT ON USA PRIMER: Kurt Angle returns to referee “Cage Fight” between Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher, Ripley & Shirai vs. Charlotte & Mystery Partner, Cole meets with Regal about Velveteen Dream, Atlas vs. Drake vs. Kushida

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

NXT ON USA PREVIEW
MAY 27, 2020
ORLANDO, FLA. AT PERFORMANCE CENTER
AIRS ON USA NETWORK

Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher have reached their boiling point as they look to settle the score inside a cage with Kurt Angle serving as the special guest referee. Before they challenge for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, my favourite Io Shirai & Rhea Ripley will team up against Charlotte Flair and a mystery partner. Plus, the winner of Group A will be decided as KUSHIDA, Drake Maverick and Jake Atlas will clash in a Triple Threat Match. It’s sure to be another action packed show as NXT takes place tonight from Full Sail University on the USA Network. Let’s take a look at what’s currently advertised for tonight’s show.

  • Kurt Angle to referee Cage Fight between Matt Riddle & Timothy Thatcher
  • Io Shirai to team with Rhea Ripley to face Charlotte Flair and a partner of her choice
  • Adam Cole to have live negotiation with William Regal regarding Velveteen Dream
  • Kushida, Drake Maverick and Jake Atlas to determine winner of Group A in Triple Threat Match

ADVERTISED MATCHES & SEGMENTS

Kurt Angle to referee Cage Fight between Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher

Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher will be stepping inside a cage to settle the score with Kurt Angle serving as the special guest referee. Riddle and Thatcher imploded after they lost the NXT Tag Team Titles to Imperium. This lead to match where Riddle picked up a win over Thatcher. That loss didn’t sit well with Thatcher as he challenged Riddle to a Knock Out or Tap Out match. Riddle one-upped Thatcher challenging him to a Cage Fight. The question is what kind of cage match did Riddle challenge Thatcher to and what role will Angle play?

(Amin’s Analysis: I like the involvement of Angle as the special guest wrestling with his background in Olympic Wrestling as he knows this style very well. My guess is we get to see Riddle and Thatcher fight in a UFC style cage. A regular steel stage would be disappointing especially with the promos from both Riddle and Thatcher leading into the match.)

Io Shirai to team with Rhea Ripley to face Charlotte Flair and a partner of her choice

Last week, Charlotte Flair got involved between my favourite Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley’s match. This didn’t take kindly with either Shirai or Ripley as they both wanted a shot against Charlotte before NXT TakeOver: In Your House. William Regal took notice as he announced that Shirai & Ripley will face Charlotte and a partner of her choice. Can Shirai & Ripley co-exist before their match at TakeOver. Who will Charlotte choose as her parter?

(Amin’s Analysis: I could see Chelsea Green as the mystery partner with Charlotte walking out on her in the end. I don’t want to see a scenario where Ripley or Shirai try to cost each other the match. This isn’t the right time for either to lose, especially Shirai who has been protected and presented as the top star in the NXT Women’s Division without the title. This should be a fun match and a great showcase for both my favourite Io Shirai and Ripley headed into the NXT Women’s Championship match at TakeOver: In Your House.)

Adam Cole to have live negotiation with William Regal regarding Velveteen Dream

Last week, Adam Cole planned an NXT Championship celebration but plans changed for the leader of the Undisputed Era after the Velveteen Dream got involved and came to the aid of Dexter Lumis. The question is will Cole’s plan to have a negotiation with Regal backfire?

(Amin’s Analysis: This live negotiation will likely lead to an NXT Championship rematch between Cole and Dream. I could see a stipulation being added to the match. It would be interesting if Lumis gets added to the match as well to have Cole overcome another challenger for his title.)

Kushida, Drake Maverick, and Jake Atlas to determine winner of Group A in Triple Threat Match

The finals of the NXT Cruiserweight Championship Tournament will be decided tonight as Kushida, Drake Maverick and Jake Atlas will compete in a Triple Threat Match. This match come as Kushida (2-1), Drake Maverick (2-1) and Jake Atlas (2-1) all have the same score in Group A. Maverick storybook chapter continue after he picked up an upset win over Kushida last week. The question remains will Maverick’s luck continue or will Kushida or Atlas play spoiler and advance to the finals.

https://twitter.com/KUSHIDA_0904/status/1263318838390784002

(Amin’s Analysis: This should be a great match featuring three very talented wrestlers. The ideal scenario here would be for Maverick to win this match, make it to the finals but come up short against El Hijo Del Fantasma but impress everyone to earn a spot on the NXT roster? I could very well see this happening. Or, I could see KUSHIDA winning but Maverick putting on a showcase and earning a spot on the NXT roster.)

The Big Takeaway From Last Week’s Show

Charlotte Flair got involved in last week’s main event between my favourite Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley. Tommaso Ciampa returned as he challenged Karrion Kross to match at NXT TakeOver: In Your House. Roderick Strong defeated Dexter Lumis. The big angle came after the match as Velveteen Dream laid out Adam Cole, while Lumis had Strong placed in a sleeper.

Overall Thoughts

NXT has been putting on some very solid episodes and this show should be very good. Looking forward to the Cage Fight and seeing what big angles come out of the show leading into TakeOver. My main interest is on the NXT Women’s Division as I just want to see my favourite Io Shirai get her moment and win the NXT Women’s Title at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.
