Wednesday Night Ratings Battle: Neck and neck again with AEW beating NXT in total viewers by slimmest of margins

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

The Wednesday Night Ratings battle stayed neck-and-neck last night (12/4) with AEW drawing 851,000 viewers and NXT drawing 845,000 viewers, a mere 6,000 difference in viewers.

In the key 18-49 demographic, AEW landed in the no. 8 spot and NXT in the no. 12 spot.

Last week, NXT beat AEW in the live-and-same-night viewership, but in the next three days, AEW virtually caught up. AEW gained 304,000 viewers for a total of 972,000 viewers, with NXT gaining 173,000 viewers for a total of 986,000.

So, the ratings battle almost couldn’t be closer at this point.

Among the male 18-49 demo, AEW drew a 0.41 compared to NXT’s 0.36, so AEW still has a lead but it’s not close to  what it was in October.

What is your mission?

The mission of the Daniela Conte Foundation is a deeply personal and heartfelt commitment to making a difference in the lives of children battling cancer. Our overarching goal is to provide direct financial support, raise awareness, and fund vital research to aid these brave young warriors and their families. Having personally experienced the harrowing journey of pediatric cancer with our daughter Daniela, I empathize with the immense challenges these families face. We believe that the help we extend through our programs is a beacon of hope when families battling this disease need it most, and we aspire to offer a guiding light through the darkest of times.

What does your charity do to further its mission? Please list examples.

We are passionate advocates for raising awareness about childhood cancer. Through impactful speaking engagements in schools, we educate students on the stark realities of pediatric cancer and highlight the glaring underfunding it receives. By empowering the younger generation with knowledge, we’re nurturing a sense of empathy and social responsibility that extends far beyond our organization.

Our commitment to spreading the word doesn’t stop at schools. We actively engage with our local newspapers and participate in radio shows to amplify our message. The more people are informed about our mission, the more support we can garner, and the more families we can assist. We are
constantly expanding our reach to different states, recognizing that childhood cancer is a nationwide issue. Our efforts know no geographical bounds because the battle against pediatric cancer is universal.

What inspired you to start your charity?

Our journey began with our eldest daughter, Daniela, who was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. Throughout her four-year battle against pediatric cancer, Daniela was a wellspring of never-ending hope and love. The drawers in our home are still filled with the little cards and drawings she crafted for us. While she fought for her life, she told us she wanted to help other children and families facing challenges like ours.

My husband Anthony and I created the Daniela Conte Foundation after Daniela gained her angel wings on March 2, 2020 at the tender age of 8. This decision was rooted in our commitment to carrying out her heartfelt wish. It’s in Daniela’s honor that we are resolute in becoming the voices of change in the battle against pediatric cancer. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow up.

How can people help you accomplish your organization’s mission or get involved in events?

People can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with cancer and support our mission in several ways:

What is the most memorable moment you’ve had since starting your organization?

One of the most touching moments in the history of the Daniela Conte Foundation was the day we received a heartfelt thank-you letter from the family of a child undergoing cancer treatment. Our grant had provided crucial assistance, enabling them to afford the fuel needed for travel to their child’s treatment appointments.

This family was a living testament to the grim reality that 30 percent of childhood cancer patients require specialized treatment at facilities located more than 60 miles from their homes. This translates to 5,000 children and their families who confront a formidable financial crisis. Travel expenses become an unexpected burden, as medical insurance often fails to cover many treatment-related costs. For these families, the simple act of paying for fuel to travel between hospitals can quite literally determine life or death.

Receiving their heartfelt letter filled our hearts with joy and reaffirmed that our efforts have a tangible, life-altering impact on the children battling childhood cancer and their families.

What else would you like people to know about your charity?

The Daniela Conte Foundation is more than just a charitable organization; it’s a labor of love and dedication by our family. We prioritize transparency and efficiency, with an impressive 95 cents out of every dollar raised going directly into our programs. As a 100 percent volunteer-run charity, our expenses are minimal, ensuring that our resources are maximized to support as many families as possible. We invite everyone to join us in our mission to provide hope, support, and resources to children fighting cancer and their families. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those who need it most.

WWE RAW PRIMER 12/2 (SPOILER-FREE): Rey Defends Against the Architect, Raiders & Viper vs. O.C., Save the Date

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW PRIMER
DES MOINES, IA. AT THE WELLS FARGO ARENA
DECEMBER 23, 2019
AIRS ON USA NETWORK, 8:00 p.m. EST
BY FRANK PETEANI (@FrankPeteani), PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Announcers: Vic Joseph, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Samoa Joe

Arena, Top 10 Moments from Last Week, and Items Advertised by WWE

Tonight’s WWE Raw remains in the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa as the episode was pre-recorded during last week’s Raw taping. We head towards the Christmas and New Year’s week and get ready to close out 2019. I would like to thank everyone who has read my previews and communicated with me on Twitter. I hope I have served you well and look forward to another year of writing for the great website that is PWTorch.com. I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season.

Here are the top 10 moments of last week’s Raw:

Here’s what’s advertised for tonight’s show:

  • The Viper and Viking Raiders to battle the O.C.
  • Mysterio to defend U.S. title against Rollins

Matches and Segments

Randy Orton & Raw Tag Team Champions the Viking Raiders (Erik & Ivar) vs. The O.C. (A.J. Styles and Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson)

Last week, in the main event, Randy Orton defeated A.J. Styles of the O.C. It had been quite the few weeks between these two as A.J. blames Randy for costing him the U.S. Championship and the ability to regain the title. Earlier in the evening, Gallows & Anderson defeated the Viking Raiders in a non-title match.

At the end of the match, Gallows & Anderson started attacking Randy until the Viking Raiders came out to make the save. They brawled as the show went off the air, setting up the six-man tag for tonight.

Here’s the Viking Raiders in a WWE.com exclusive, as well as some Twitter trash talk from the O.C. and Randy:

Frank’s Analysis: This is fairly straight forward and what I expected would happen last week. It advances the story, which likely continues on some level heading into Royal Rumble season.

U.S. Championship: Rey Mysterio (champ) vs. Seth Rollins

Last week on Raw, a gauntlet match was set up to determine whom would challenge Rey Mysterio for the U.S. Championship. 24/7 Champion R-Truth defeated Akira Tozawa, who then got eliminated by Ricochet. Ricochet defeated Matt Hardy much to the dismay of the crowd but was then beaten by Humberto Carrillo. Andrade, whom had lost two matches to Carrillo in the past two weeks, attacked and DDT’d him onto the concrete before the match would begin. No decision was announced. Andrade and Zelina Vega had something to say about this situation:

Later on, Charly Caruso interviewed Seth Rollins and asked why he attacked Rey earlier. He wanted to issue him a challenge, and thus he did so for the U.S. Championship. Rey accepted later on. The match was taped during last week’s Raw. We’ll find out the result tonight.

Frank’s Analysis: It’s not that big of a deal, but to have an hour-long gauntlet match and not have a decision rendered is annoying. WWE does this so many times and it teaches fans that matches don’t matter. What’s worse is WWE doesn’t even address how they’re going to handle the no-contest. At least make it look like you’re doing something behind the scenes and have the announcers tell us how you’re going to handle it. For example, have Carrillo and Andrade face each other and the winner faces the winner of Seth vs. Rey the following week. At least that pays off the match, sets up a couple of weeks of TV, and makes fighting over the U.S. title feel important. Maybe I expect too much, I don’t know.

Announced for Next Week

Save the Date: The Wedding of Bobby Lashley and Lana

WWE announced that Bobby Lashley and Lana would have their wedding next week. Last week on Raw, Lana coerced (or pushed, forced, I don’t know) Bobby into proposing to her. He did so in a way that was apparently rehearsed. Nonetheless they are now engaged and will have their wedding on next week’s episode in the XL Center in Hartford, CT, as was announced on WWE.com. Bobby put up a few tweets which I included. Lana did as well, but I got a splitting headache reading her timeline and so I decided not to include one blessed tweet from her.

This takes place next week, but I’m certain they’ll talk about it tonight. Now, I hope these two know the history of failed weddings on WWE TV:

  • “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Elizabeth’s wedding at SummerSlam ‘91 was marred by Jake “The Snake” Roberts cobra appearing out of one of the gifts.
  • Test and Stephanie McMahon was ruined by Triple H showing the video of he and Stephanie getting married at a drive-thru in Vegas. (You have to admit, Triple H was hilarious in that video)
  • Triple H called out Stephanie for faking a pregnancy during their wedding vow renewal. (Stephanie screaming was classic).
  • Matt Hardy interrupted Kane and Lita’s wedding.
  • Kane interrupted Edge and Lita’s wedding and gave the priest a Tombstone.
  • Edge and Vickie Guerrero were interrupted by Triple H showing a video of Edge fooling around with the wedding planner, which turned out to be Alicia Fox. What a way to debut.
  • Teddy Long had a heart attack during his wedding to Kristal Marshall.
  • A.J. Lee agreed to be the new Raw G.M. and didn’t finish her wedding with Daniel Bryan (that was so weird).

There may be more, but I think I’ve made my point. Here’s their engagement photos (hey if I have to look at them, so do you):

Frank’s Analysis: (Shaking my head laughing). It’s gotten to a point with this storyline that it’s so bad it’s comical. It’s sad to say, but I get a guilty pleasure out of watching Lana go out there and embarrass herself. Bobby has actually shown some personality here. Folks please, don’t take any of this as a compliment to this storyline.

Other Matches and Segments from Last Week

  • Erick Rowan won another squash match and we still wonder about the animal cage.
  • A Liv Morgan vignette aired where she said she must destroy herself so the real her can emerge.
  • Asuka defeated NXT’s Deonna Purrazzo.

Summary & Closing Thoughts

We start the holiday week so we’ll likely not see anything too crazy, although next week there could be a big angle to close out the show. There have been times in the past during the final Raw of the year where they want to do something to hook you into next year. For example, Daniel Bryan joined the Wyatt Family on the final Raw of 2013. My memory is a little fuzzy on other years but that one jumped out to me and I feel like there were others.

Interview Highlights: NWO Sting Jeff Farmer updates what he’s been up to since his career ended, WCW locker room politics, time in Japan, did TNA contact him

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

Jeff Farmer, who wrestled most famously as NWO Sting (the “imposter Sting” on WCW Monday Nitro), spoke with James Walsh of Wrestling Epicenter this week about his time on WCW TV and what he’s done since. The following are highlights as transcribed by the show’s producers and provided to PWTorch.com. You can listen now at www.WrestlingEpicenter.com.

•On what he’s been up to since leaving wrestling: “I retired a number of years ago and went back to school and got my Masters from the University of Miami. Now, I work for the University. I make a few (wrestling) appearances every now and then but not very many. My roots are in Japan and I actually was back there I wrestled there last year for (The Great) Muta and I think I’m going over there this year as well. But, other than that, I pretty much have hung the boots up.”

•On doing wrestling conventions: “You know, I haven’t done too many of those. Scott (Norton), I’m good buddies with Scott. He’s invited me to a few. But, I really haven’t done too many. But, when I was in Tokyo last year, I got to meet a lot of the fans. The Japanese fans are amazing and it was a thrill to get back in the ring after 15 years.”

•On the Cobra character and if it was based on G.I. Joe or the Sylvester Stallone movie: “(Laughs) Great question! I started off in a tag team called Thunder and Lightning with my good friend Clark Haynes. The Cobra character, it wasn’t really based on the Stallone movie. It was kind of a covert military kind of thing. I didn’t really flush it out that well. But, I thought it was interesting. I would give a dog tag off to a kid in the crowd and then give a salute so it had some interactive components to it. So, I thought it was an OK character. But, again, I didn’t really think about the future or even the back story. Of course, they did a little (back story) with (Craig “Pitbull”) Pittman later. But, I thought it was an Ok character. I think it had potential. But, it was tough with the talent in WCW. Where do you put them? How much TV time do they get? But, again, it was a decent character. But, they didn’t do that much with it.”

•On his feud with Craig Pittman having cool entrances: “Yeah, I was under the ring one night and came up from behind him. It was fun. But, you had to have the right kind of backing for those things to really work.”

•On looking a lot like Sting physically before he played the NWO Sting: “That is exactly, probably, the reason Eric Bischoff asked me to do the NWO Sting. Steve (Borden, Sting) and I were similar sized and looked relatively close.”

•On the prosthetics used to make him look more like Sting for the Lex Luger limo segment: “They had an AFX guy, I think his name was Andre. He was working in Hollywood but he was doing side stuff for WCW. He took a mold of Steve’s head, like of his facial features, and then they took a mold of my head. His forehead brows, like on his forehead, were bigger. Then, of course, I had lighter eyes and he had dark eyes. I had this prosthetic thing on my face to make it more like his face. It looked really close! But, after a while, we dropped the prosthetics because we didn’t need it because of the paint. No one was looking at our skills to see if they were a match. And then, the contacts. The contects were terrible! I remember when I put those on, I had never worn contacts before. It was really difficult for me to see with those on! I remember when I went to attack Lex, it kind of moved and I couldn’t see him. But, no one knew that part!”

•On the original NWO really sparking the Monday Night Wars and “Attitude Era” as it is known now: “You know, I agree with you. It was amazing to be apart of. And, coming out as Sting at Fall Brawl and everyone thinkint it was Sting and the swerve, it was just a great time in wrestling to be a part of. The amount of attention, from the fans, that the nWo was able to generate! It was amazing! Credit to Hogan, Hall, Nash, and (Eric) Bischoff for the success of the group. It was really an amazing feat to see it make wrestling so popular.”

•On the NWO Sting character having more legs in the U.S. than it was given: “The character was great because it could have been like an evil twin like Batman or a Spider Man with Black Spiderman or whatever you want to call it, like a dark super hero and Sting was like a super hero. Of course, this was not any of my idea. Eric Bischoff told me if it leaks or gets out, they’re going to squash it. Again, this was above my pay grade but the character could have been a pain for Sting and a thorn in hsi side for the long haul. Maybe, down the road, they could end up on the same side and there could have been a Sting tag team and they fight together. But, there were so many things they could have done with it, you know?”

•On the character not being a clone of Sting: “You know, initially, it was designed to fool everybody. But, after a while, you know, I never wore the singlets that he wore. I always had my own tights. On the face paint, I put in a few more lines so it would be obvious that I wasn’t trying to be Sting, I was trying to mock Sting and be a bad version of Sting.”

•On the success of the character in Japan: “In Japan, I was the nWo Sting and I did that character for years, like two or three years. I had hundreds of matches as nWo Sting. The Japanese fans knew that I was not trying to be Sting and it was its own character. In the US, it wasn’t really presented that way at all.”

•On his likeness making it to the back cover of a Sting DVD because WWE couldn’t tell the difference: “(laughs) No, no royalties! I heard about that. That picture, I think, was taken when I was in Japan. I think I had Hiro Saito in a little grip there.”

•On the NWO’s popularity in traditionally WWE markets: “You know, there was a war goign on! It was a great time. It was almost like a race because you had the ratings war, the buys war. And, you know, it was a great time for the boys too because if you were unhappy, you had a little leverage to go to the other side, maybe? I think that was kind of lost after the sale of WCW. You know? You have McDonalds and Burger King! You don’t want to have just one choice.”

•On comparing his experience in the NWO in WCW and in Japan: “For sure. In WCW, there were a lot of little clicks and nepotism and you never really knew who was on whose side. In Japan, it was just straight forward wrestling. I would get there, my name would be on the board, I thrived in that environment much more than in WCW. It wasn’t anybody’s fault. It was just that there was a lot of talent in WCW and everybody was fighting for TV time and we (WCW) didn’t really have space for it all. It was just a different time.”

•On if he ever was contacted to reprise the “Sting” persona in TNA: “If it was ever discussed, no one ever contacted me about it.”

•On AEW bringing wrestling back to TNT: “I think it is great! I started a long tme ago and there were still territories… Wrestling was a lot different. More old school and I hate to say that because I know a lot of guys are like, “Oh yeah, it was old school when we did this and were on the road.” I think you have a tremendous opportunity today with social media to reach so many people. If you think about it, you only had the time you were on TV to connect, get over, get noticed, or whatever you want to call it. Now, with social media, you could follow somebody when they go home, when they’re at the gym, when they’re doing something else. That allows you a celebrity status that you couldn’t attain when you were only on television for a certain amount of time and that is all you had. Now, with social media, it is a completely different era for wrestling. I think that is a plus!”

•On if he watches the current product: “You know, I really don’t. I did for a while when I first got out of it but I found it really frustrating me! (laughs) Becausse, when you know the business, it frusterates you to see things. You know? I didn’t enjoy watching it so I don’t watch it anymore.”

•On the Bullet Club and New Japan’s success now: “You know, I think it is amazing. I say I don’t watch it but that means I don’t watch it regularly. I wrestled Tanahashi when he was just a young kid and I saw he just won the Heavyweight belt. He’s an amazing talent. Chris Jericho, he’s a friend of mine who I’ve known from WCW, I know he goes back there. It really is a resurgance of New Japan. Scott and I talk about it back when we were there with Muta and Chono… We really thought we were the pinacle, and for us I guess it was the pinacle, of New Japan. But, they have an amazing crop of young talent. We were, as you said, kind of doing it in isolation. Unless you bought a tape or bootlegged it somehow… Now it is a lot easier for everyone to see these guys and that is great because there is a lot of great talent to watch over there.”

•On final thoughts on the NWO and their induction in the WWE Hall of Fame: “You know, I just want to thank everyone who came out and see me or watched me. It was a lot of fun getting to perform in fromt of them and trick them and have them hate me or whatever that was. (laughs) It was an amazing thing to be even a small part of. And, congratulations to those guys (Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Syxx) going into the WWE Hall of Fame! It was something I was, again, just glad to be a part of!”

2/5 AEW DYNAMITE TV PRIMER: MJF lashes Cody ten times, Moxley vs. Ortiz, Baker vs. Sakazaki, Young Bucks & Omega & Page vs. Lucha Bros. & Butcher & Blade

FEBRUARY 5, 2020
HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA AT THE VON BRAUN CENTER
AIRS ON TNT, 8:00 PM EST
BY JOSHUA CHAMBERS (@josh_chambers), PWTORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Arena

The Von Braun Center is a 10,000 seat arena in the heart of Huntsville, Alabama. It has been the home of legendary sports dynasties of yore, such as the Global Basketball Association’s Huntsville Lasers, indoor soccer’s Huntsville Fire, and the Arena Football League’s Alabama Vipers. In 2002 the VBC hosted the inaugural Total Nonstop Action PPV.

Road to Huntsville

Matches Announced:

  • Young Bucks & Omega & Page vs Lucha Brothers & The Butcher & The Blade
  • Britt Baker vs. Yuka Sakazaki
  • Jon Moxley vs Ortiz

The following segments have been advertised:

  • 10 Lashes On Live TV

AEW Dark Results

Jurassic Express defeated Brandon Cutler & Sonny Kiss

Hikaru Shida defeated Melanie Cruise w/The Nightmare Collective

Kenny Omega & Riho defeated Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford

Best Friends (w/Orange Cassidy) defeated Shawn Spears & Colin Delaney

Matches and Segments

Young Bucks, Omega & Page vs Lucha Brothers, The Butcher & The Blade

The Elite need to overcome the long-simmering tension between Adam Page and the rest of the group if they want to win tonight. For months Page has been vocally dissatisfied with The Elite, and for the last two weeks he’s openly taunted the Young Bucks over their lack of success in the tag team division.

The Butcher & The Blade have enlisted the Lucha Brothers for this match and hope to fare better than they did in their loss to the Bucks last week.

(Josh’s Analysis: Page hasn’t quite turned completely, but I think the rest of the Elite are underselling his heel stuff. We’ll see their feud start to solidify this week, hopefully leading to a match at Revolution for the titles.)

Britt Baker (4) vs. Yuka Sakazaki

Yuka Sakazaki returns to AEW for the first time since Fyter Fest and will face the 4th ranked Britt Baker one-on-one.

(Josh’s Analysis: AEW is touting this as a big return, so I expect Sakazaki to take home a win over the newly heel Baker.)

Jon Moxley (1) vs. Ortiz

A few weeks ago Moxley humiliated the Inner Circle, refusing to join them and making off with a million dollar sports car. A week later he defeated Sammy Guevara, and last week he saved Darby Allin from an Inner Circle beatdown. Tonight he’ll be hoping to keep his streak alive with a win over Ortiz.

(Josh’s Analysis: I love the way this Moxley/Jericho feud is building, and how Moxley is dismantling the Inner Circle on his way to the Final Boss, Chris Jericho. I fully expect a Moxley victory tonight.)

10 Lashes On Live TV

MJF has three demands that must be met if Cody wants to face him at Revolution:

Cody can not touch MJF until their match begins

Cody must face Wardlow in a cage match

MJF gets to give Cody 10 lashes with a leather belt

Tonight we get the lashes, and we’ll see the cage match February 19th in Atlanta.

AEW outdraws NXT again, both shows increase viewership up against highly rated Democratic Debate, key metrics and 2020 averages so far

SPOTLIGHTED PODCAST ALERT (YOUR ARTICLE BEGINS A FEW INCHES DOWN)…

Although the Democratic Debate drew nearly 20 million viewers last night and outdrew the viewership for the 2020 Grammys and 2020 Golden Globes, it didn’t stop AEW and NXT from drawing more viewers than last week.

NXT drew a 0.59 cable rating, up from 0.57 last week, right in line with the 0.59 average leading into this week (excluding the Jan. 1 “Awards” show).

AEW outdrew NXT by 99,000 viewers in live and same-night-DVR viewership, below the 150,000 average of the prior six weeks.
