When I was 11, my father brought home the voice of tenor Enrico Caruso (1873–1921) in a three-LP box set whose faux leather cover and sepia-tinted photos I admired over and over. When he put on the Sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor, I exclaimed, “Daddy, I’ve heard that before!”

“Yeah, you broke it when you were 2,” he replied.

I was weaned on opera. With all that Italianate passion bubbling in my blood, reconnecting with the voices of Caruso and Galli-Curci felt like coming home. While Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and then Donovan soon joined them—I used to blast Little Richard at a high enough volume to drive my mother out of the house—it was with Caruso, and then Joan Sutherland and Leontyne Price, that I whistled arias day after day.

When stereo arrived, my mother designed a custom cabinet for two coaxial speakers and a Garrard turntable whose arm was so heavy that it could have done double duty as a weapon. “Look, honey,” my father would say as he put on Enoch Light and the Light Brigade’s Provocative Percussion. “First it’s in the left speaker, and now it’s in the right speaker. Isn’t stereo amazing!” Soundstaging? Who knew from soundstaging?

In 1961, my high school music teacher asked, “Who wants to get tickets for Joan Sutherland’s debut at the Met in Lucia di Lammermoor?” It’s amazing that my arm remained in its socket as my hand shot up and I screamed, “Me!” To this day, I remember how Miss Dietrich’s face turned white as everyone began stomping their feet, demanding another encore in the middle of the Mad Scene, and the old Met’s 5th tier began shaking up and down. For the next six years, until I dropped acid in an Amherst College fraternity house, Sutherland’s debut reigned as the peak experience of my life.

Shortly after I headed to college with my father’s $200 Magnavox record player, I checked out a late-career Maria Callas Rossini recital to try to find out why everyone in High Fidelity, Stereo Review, and the New York Times was talking about her. Every time Callas hit a climactic high note, her voice wobbled so badly I broke out laughing. But I sensed I was missing something. Then, in my senior year, alone in my dorm room, I put on Callas’s famed 1953 recording of Tosca. I didn’t know the music, so I waited and waited until, some time after tenor Giuseppe di Stefano sang Mario Cavaradossi’s great aria, “Recondita armonia,” a strange, muffled vocal sound emerged from the background. Before I could figure out who it was and what they were singing, the voice moved closer to the microphone, and I simultaneously discerned the name “Mario” and saw sparks fly before my eyes. “Oh my God, so that’s Maria Callas!” I said to myself, as the unbridled rage and fury that defined one aspect of Callas’s artistry touched me in ways I never expected opera to touch me.

As someone who has always felt emotion in music and perceived the voice as a portal to the soul, my one goal in life was to have a sound system that would bring me closer to the point of creation of the artists I love. I didn’t care about a fancy car—I drive a ’94 Toyota Corolla, and one of its door bolts just fell off—or a house (until I saw too many of my friends evicted by landlords trying to get around rent control), but I did want to get closer to the point of musical creation, to hear more glow in Elisabeth Schumann’s golden highs and more nuance in Lotte Lehmann’s expressive voice. That was heaven.

Fortunately, I had friends who worked in record shops and could give me sale prices. Wherever I journeyed, boxes filled with opera LPs followed. When I lived communally, there was a guy who, when everyone was away, would put on my recording of Beecham’s La Bohème and cry his heart out. Then he’d go back to working in the auto plant. That was a time when I was convinced that the world was made of tangerine trees and marmalade skies. When I participated in psychedelic therapy sessions at the Institute Wilhelm Reich in Mexico City in the summer of 1976, I gave the institute’s director a copy of an Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Seraphim LP and found myself tripping on Mozart and Bach.

I’d never heard the words “high-end” or “audiophile” back then, but when Julian Hirsch declared that fancy cabling can’t make a difference, I sensed he was wrong. Then I discovered how better cabling transformed my AR speakers. When I’d stay with friends, I’d give them better speaker cables as a thank-you gift.

My taste has changed over time. Heartfelt singing, whether joyful or sad, affirmative or furious, classical or rock, touches me equally, and the visceral power of a symphony orchestra speaks as deeply as a solo instrument. As long as I can sense truth through the notes, I am fulfilled.

To me, high-end audio is not a hobby. It’s an essential pathway to the emotional and spiritual truths I seek through music.

The Bladerunner !

Today marks 24 years since the death of Owen Hart. In remembrance of her uncle, Natalya shared on Twitter: “Love these rare photos of Owen working for my grandfather in Stampede Wrestling. I've done it for 10 years so it's so crazy to be away from it.To have a baby and then go back to work in an area that's just so physical and so demanding — I'm really looking forward to that challenge. In an interview with the Daily Mail, AJ Styles was asked how he handled his time away from the ring with a broken ankle:I will tell you this. I thought I might go stir-crazy being stuck at home and not being able to do what I wanted to do, which I did a little bit. I wanna go when I wanna go and do what I wanna do and when you've got a boot and crutches it just hinders that and it will drive you nuts. That's what drove me crazy, not being unable to be in a wrestling ring as I thought it would.I enjoyed the time, I enjoyed seeing my kids and my wife as it's the first time I've been out this long in my career. So it kind of put things in perspective, like when retirement does come, I'm going to be ok. But I did go down to the Performance Center and see these young, hungry kids and it inspired me to finish strong. Whenever I finish from now on, I want to finish strong. Being down there really helped my motivation.Kurt Angle and his wife Giovanna renewed their wedding vows over the weekend: “This past weekend, I had the honor of remarrying my beautiful wife Giovanna at Crossroads Church. It was an amazing family moment because we were able to get married in front of our children, showing them what true love really is. Thank you to my incredible wife for saying ‘YES’ again. I love you always and forever!!!!"After being interrupted by Brock Lesnar on Raw, Mustafa Ali finished cutting his promo on social media.Nikki Cross vs. Emma and Dana Brooke vs. Tegan Nox are the matches that will be airing on this week’s episode of Main Event. The Under the Ring podcast interviewed Tiffany Stratton.People has an interview with Bianca Belair.WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded the following matches: Cena vs. Foley vs. Lashley vs. Orton vs. Booker T for the WWE Championship (Night of Champions 2007), Bayley vs. Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship (Clash of Champions 2019), and AJ Styles & Liv Morgan vs. Damian Priest & Rhea Ripley (May 23, 2022 Raw).

WWE’s John Cena told Austin Theory privately ‘I don’t believe what you do’

John Cena says he really believes what he said to Austin Theory on the March 6 episode of WWE Raw.

Sam Roberts released an interview with the 16-time World Champion on Monday. During the conversation, Cena compared Theory to Roman Reigns and discussed Roman's early difficulties getting over as a babyface.

Cena said:

I was really trying to hammer this home with Theory. It took Roman 10 years, eight years at the top, pushed for eight years for the lightbulb to go off and be like, 'I"m doing it my way. I will work with who they say, I will hit my times, but I'm going to be who I really am.'

Cena continued:

When I talk to somebody like Theory, who has stars in his eyes and at 25 thinks he's got a long road in front of him. You really need to start now, failing. Don't just perform, fail, like a lot and then one day you'll get it. You need to have like 85 suffering succotash moments.

Cena confronted Theory when WWE returned to Boston for the 3/6 Raw. During the segment, Cena told Theory he has everything a WWE executive looks for in a wrestler and that "in theory" he should be a big star, but he's not because nobody cares about him. Cena would later tell Sam Roberts that he told Theory everything he was going to say in his promo that night beforehand.

Cena said:

Austin is great and easy to work with and we wrote that together. He was in every step of the process.

Cena continued later in the conversation:

Fans can see through the BS if you don't believe in your character. It's what I said to Austin Theory, 'Dude, you are young, you are athletic, you will work for this company, you'll do interviews, you'll go X, Y, and Z, I don't believe what you do when you're out there, I don't.

I said it to him personally before I said it publicly.

In a room with Austin Theory, I said the reason I came back to Boston is because you can't do this yourself yet. You cannot carry a WrestleMania promo yourself yet and if you fail, we waste the equity that I'm willing to give. And if in that match I get hurt, I hold up a production, which puts 300 people out of work. Let's do this right, let's get some equity here and then you have to start thinking about the angles and what's the most important thing and what are we really trying to tell, what's our story. Okay, I don't believe what you do, that's what I'm going with.

Theory was eliminated from the World Heavyweight title tournament after Bobby Lashley won a three-way against him and Sheamus on the 5/12 SmackDown. He is now scheduled to defend his US title against Sheamus on this week's episode. Sheamus and Theory worked three matches against each other on WWE house shows this weekend.
