The 2019 Oscars Afterparty Outfits Are Just As Over-The-Top As The Red Carpet

if you thought one incredibly elaborate and exorbitantly expensive outfit was enough for the Oscars, then you’re sorely mistaken. Once the awards wrapped up and everyone needed a drink after the very divisive “Green Book” won Best Picture, the stars hit up Vanity Fair’s Oscars afterparty.

While a few people — Billy Porter, Lady Gaga, Spike Lee — stayed in the outfits they wore during the ceremony, the vast majority of them changed it up. From tracksuits to gorgeous gowns to a second set of pink velvet blazers to tops that are just bras, here are the outfits from the Oscars afterparty.

  • Regina King

The Best Supporting Actress winner swapped out her modern white Oscar de la Renta ceremony dress for this romantic flowy tangerine dress.

  • Brie Larson

    Sleek in Celine.

  • Jennifer Lopez

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
This gown is jaw-droppingly beautiful. J.Lo should teach a class on how to master the red carpet.

  • Glenn Close

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
After losing Best Actress to Olivia Colman in a surprise upset, Glenn Close changed from Oscars gold to "Fatal Attraction" black.

  • Chloë Sevigny

Peasant sleeves, bustier, bare midriff, asymmetrical sequined skirt, giant bow? This outfit appears to be combining a lot of late 90s/early 2000s trends in a way that’s bringing on a tension headache.

  • Winnie Harlow

The Canadian model looks stunning in some of the night’s biggest trends: a pink hue and several thousand tonnes of tulle.

  • Gemma Chan

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
This is gorgeous and glam and leaves us wondering: Why wasn’t it her main dress?

  • Best Actress Olivia Colman

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Between this Stella McCartney and her Prada ceremony dress, it’s clear Olivia Colman loves a weird scarf-like accent, which somehow fits perfectly.

  • Serena Williams

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
The tennis pro is on-trend in tulle.

  • Zoe Kravitz

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
This skirt is by Saint-Laurent and the top is … fully just a bra.

  • Lupita Nyong’o

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Lupita Nyong’o looks like she’s having the time of her life in this feathery Oscar de la Renta, and truthfully, that’s all that counts.

  • Emilia Clarke

The sleeves on this Rosie Assoulin dress are wacky, but somehow it works.

  • Kate Beckinsale

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
    Zany, but irresistibly fun.

  • Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
That colour dress looks lovely with her hair. And we’re not particularly huge fans of a white suit over a white turtleneck, but it’s fun when men take a chance.

  • Allison Janney

Allison Janney is underrated as an actress and as a fashion icon. This simple but super-elegant gown deserves our respect just as much as her long career as an exceptional character actress (remember the horny guidance counselor she played in "10 Things I Hate About You?").

  • Ellen Pompeo

We love you, Ellen Pompeo, but this is a monochromatic mess.

  • Tina Fey

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
This is kicky and fun — and rumour has it she was wearing Converse underneath.

  • Sabrina Dhowre and Idris Elba

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Even if you, like us, can never forgive Idris Elba for getting engaged to a Canadian who is not you, you have to admit that he and fiancée Sabrina Dhowre look amazing.

  • Chrissy Teigen

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Chrissy! What are you doing in this fussy (and, frankly, confusing) Marchesa? thing? What is this silhouette, and why is it trimmed in muppets?

  • Tessa Thompson

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Her black and gold ceremony dress was lovely. This black and silver afterparty dress seems like a downgrade on several levels.

  • Tiffany Haddish

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
The feathers and the colour scheme aren’t our cup of tea, as Spike Lee might say, but the silhouette is beautiful, and we just can’t criticize someone who looks like they’re having so much fun.

  • Kate Bosworth

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
This Nguyen Cong Tri gown is flawless. That train!!!

  • Shailene Woodley

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
No, we’re not Shailene Woodley’s mom, but it’s hard to fight the urge to tell her to smile, and to get the hair out of her face, and to consider a skirt that isn’t see-through.

  • Aubrey Plaza

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Cape? Jacket? Unclear, but we’re here for it.

  • Michael B. Jordan

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
    Dapper as anything!

  • Michelle Yeoh

    Daniele Venturelli via Getty Images
Michelle Yeoh gets the J.Lo award for killing it in both the ceremony and afterparty categories! This is gorgeous.

  • Rayka Zehtabchi

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
The winner of Best Documentary Short for "Period. End of Sentence." looks like she’s living her best life in this asymmetrical gown and Netflix sandals.

  • Laura Dern

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
LAURA DERN CAN DO NO WRONG, and we wish she had advised some of her "Big Little Lies" co-stars (cough, cough, Zoe Kravitz Shailene Woodley).

  • Emily Ratajkowski

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
More than anything, this Brock Collection dress just looks uncomfortable.

  • Hailee Steinfeld

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images

    What? And also: why?

  • Mindy Kaling

    George Pimentel via Getty Images
Shades of J.Lo’s disco ball-esque ceremony dress! Pretty and fun.

  • Tracee Ellis Ross

    David Crotty via Getty Images
This one-shouldered Atelier Versace dress isn’t our favourite, but TER has a way of pulling anything off.

  • Naomi Campbell

    JB LACROIX via Getty Images
Naomi Campbell wears Alexander McQueen very, very well.

  • Letitia Wright

    Gregg DeGuire via Getty Images
This is fresh and fun! Yellow isn’t quite having the moment that pink is, but between Letitia and Kate Bosworth and Constance Wu, it’s having a pretty good night nonetheless.

  • Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet

    Daniele Venturelli via Getty Images
We cannot stress this enough: THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN THE NIGHT THAT JASON MOMOA HAS WORN A PINK VELVET BLAZER THAT MATCHES WIFE LISA BONET’S DRESS. And he’s even wearing the Fendi scrunchie from his first outfit in his hair for the afterparty! Every part of this is perfect.

  • Priyanka Chopra

The new Mrs. Jonas looks princess-y in Elie Saab.
