REGINA — Saskatchewan’s premier is skipping this year’s Queen City Pride Parade in Regina.

A statement from Scott Moe’s office on Friday said that heavy international travel this month is one of the reasons for not going.

Moe plans to be in his constituency of Rosthern-Shellbrook during the June 16 parade.

The premier is attending meetings in Washington, D.C., next week with senators, members of Congress and three senior members of the White House.

He’s also attending the Western Governors Conference in South Dakota from June 25 to 27.

The provincial government says that it supports the LGBTQ community and several members of the Saskatchewan Party caucus will be at other Pride parades in the province.

Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, who represents Regina-Qu’Appelle, is skipping the parade as well.

Scheer’s brother-in-law Seatle Seahawks punter and Regina native Jon Ryan is one of the parade’s grand marshals.

Jake Enwright, a spokesman for Scheer, confirmed that one of the reasons Scheer won’t attend is because organizers won’t allow police to march in uniform.

Allowing officers to wear their uniforms in Pride parades has been a controversial issue at events across the country.

Enwright cited the Conservatives’ condemnation of the persecution of gay men in Chechnya and by Islamic State fighters as proof of where the party stands on LGBTQ issues.

“We’ve introduced a motion in the house to condemn the persecution of gay men in Chechnya at the hands of the Russian government,” Enwright said in a phone interview.
