The rise in popularity of the Bird Box challenge, based on the popular Netflix movie of the same name, has caused YouTube to change its guidelines.
The Hollywood Reporter explains YouTube has updated its policies to ban challenges that can cause physical injuries or deaths. The platform also advises that it doesn’t allow pranks that cause people to believe they’re in real danger.
YouTube’s page for policies on harmful or dangerous content also has an update.
“We recently announced updates to our policies regarding dangerous challenges and pranks,” reads a new statement. “Challenges that present an apparent risk of death are not allowed on YouTube. Content that features a child participating in dangerous challenges that pose an imminent risk of injury or bodily harm are also not allowed on YouTube.
We also don’t allow pranks that lead victims to believe they are in physical danger or that can cause real physical harm. Dangerous or abusive pranks that may cause emotional distress to children are not allowed.”
The policy change comes after an influx in participants of the Bird Box challenge, which sees people trying to complete tasks while blindfolded like the characters in the film. Some of these are fairly harmless, like putting on makeup, but others show people driving cars and walking into traffic.
YouTube isn’t the only company wary of this behaviour, with Netflix also asking fans not to hurt themselves by participating in the challenge.
