Disney unveiled new footage from their upcoming live-action remake of Aladdin at CinemaCon on Wednesday, including the film’s version of the iconic “Friend Like Me” musical number.
What was immediately apparent is that, unlike Jon Favreau’s upcoming Lion King remake, Aladdin doesn’t appear to be quite as much of a shot-for-shot remake of the original animated film. (It should be noted the visual effects in the footage shown were not final.)
The shot selections and backgrounds of the new “Friend Like Me” scene were markedly different from the animated version; indeed, matching what animators did in that particular sequence and with a performer as wild as Robin Williams always seemed impossible. So the remake — and new Genie actor Will Smith — is definitely doing its own albeit familiarly energetic thing.
Will Smith’s Genie is far smoother and less nutty than Robin Williams’ was; if the latter’s was basically Williams’ frenzied comic persona captured in animated form then this live-action Genie is … well, a blue Will Smith.
Big Willy brought his signature brand of charm to this sequence, seeming at home among the visual effects and outlandish nature of the whole affair far more than his co-star Mena Massoud, who plays Aladdin. Massoud looked lost at several moments, as if he were merely responding to off-screen direction to look at different tennis balls and imagine what was there … which is probably exactly what he was doing. As much as Smith seemed in the moment, though, Massoud came across like a prop, not unlike how Emma Watson looked similarly lost in the “Be Our Guest” scene in the Beauty and the Beast remake.
DUMBO\r\n\r\nDisney\u0027s live-action remake of Dumbo is fast approaching, with the film currently scheduled for release on March 29, 2019. Perhaps it was just this scene; after all, one of the toughest things any actor can do is act opposite nothing. Massoud’s Aladdin seemed more confident in the quick glimpses shown of him with Naomi Scott’s Jasmine.
The footage began with Aladdin in the Cave of Wonders showing how he came into possession of the magic lamp. While this film’s Abu seemed more like an actual monkey rather than entirely cartoonish, the film is also definitely not going for the same photo-realistic animal CG as the Lion King remake.
